The Mothership Lets the Cat Out of the Bag
On page 40 of Sega Sammy Holdings’s public earnings presentation, which you can read in English here, the parent company of Sega has essentially cemented ports of Sonic Generations coming to the Nintendo 3DS and PC along with the already confirmed XBOX 360 and PS3 ports.
Generations, along with Mario and Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, is listed as a major title for the company in the next fiscal year. The platform listing was made on both Japanese and English language reports, so this doesn’t appear to be a misprint.
If it holds, the news confirms earlier murmurs of the game coming to the 3DS, and it’s also welcome news for desktop users who have been yearning for a recent Sonic port for some time now.
We will bring you more as it becomes available. Thanks to Woun for the original tip from the Japanese listing.

Sweet.
Sonic Generations REALLY GOING TO PC?
What.
Well, that doesn’t really help me. I only use my old PC for e-mail… and reading sites like this
That and I’m not going to get a 3DS for a while at least.
I hope spreading it out so much doesn’t diminish any quality…
Well, now we know what’s going to be in the next Nintendo Power.
IN PC NO!!!!
Sega, NOW, I don’t buy sonic generations =/
If you launch in PC, you’re asking to be pirated.
As much as I love a PC port Lucas Have a point, the game will be pirated and that will effect sells.
Thats nice to know that there will be alternative ports of the game. I just hope sega focuses on the ps3/360 versions, because those are the main ones. The PC version most likely will be a port of the ps3/360 versions, since new PCs can handle that processing power. 3DS will most likely look like a gamecube port.
That’s what’s weird…if they can handle a 3DS port, why can’t/won’t they handle a Wii port? I’m not complaining, just genuinely curious. I mean, I guess they’d want to out it on a handheld too and all, but with the inclusion of PC it looks almost deliberate that they’re avoiding the Wii.
I wonder if there’s something non-Olympic for either Wii or “Project Cafe”?
Fan freaking tastic 1080p at 60 FPS
I have a feeling the 3DS version will be completely different from the other versions.
@Sjmaster
I think it has to be…I’m not too familiar with the processing power of 3DS but I’d be really impressed if it managed to pull Unleashed-style levels. I wonder if they’re going to do a behind-the-shoulder perspective though. That hasn’t been done on a handheld yet.
The PC/3DS versions will probably be the same. A PC (unless you have a gaming PC) or 3DS can’t handle the Hedgehog Engine. Period.
Oh, and Sega, you’re ASKING to be pirated. The sales of Sonic games have increased, don’t let them fall back in this rebirth of Sonic.
For those mentioning 3DS version… its unlikely to actually be a PORT. Its probably moreso from the ground up. Also, Wii probably isn’t being focused on because they’re actually focusing on Nintendo’s next console, which will be a lot easier to port the game too.
Why no Generations on WII!?!?!?!?!?!?
Well I finally have a good reason to buy a Nintendo 3DS now.
I really hope they confirm this soon, the mods are going to be fun I want to see classic Sonic in modern Sonic stages and if at all possible a SA2 style jump dash over the pathetic useless one from Unleashed. I know this is unlikely but I want full Steam support for achievements, leaderboards and DLC.
@Tom C!
That’s why PC games feature low/medium/high settings for various levels of computers, Microsoft and Sony like to talk a big talk but their hardware is circa 2005 ordinary desktops from the past couple years are more than capable of powering the hedgehog engine.
Piracy on the DS and Wii is rampant and the PS3 is likely to ignite into a wildfire like the PSP in the coming months.
Well, I’m too tired to begin to talk about piracy, I’m just gonna say that read and learn before you open your mouth about something.
Well, I think that I will get it for 360, even though my PC will take Sonic Generations without any problem at all. But I might get it for PC, I’ll see. =) But I’m glad that the PC owners will get the game as well. I remeber when I didn’t have 360 or Wii, you know. And all the games I wanted came to 360 and Wii and I only had my lovly PC and some older consoles. ;(
YES!!! I was hoping it would be out on a Nintendo console that I own, and I have a 3DS, so… YES!!!
This is great news! I guess I’ll be getting the PC and 3DS versions.
@Tom C!
The PC version is probably being made for people whose PCs can handle it- if you don’t have the minimun specs, you can still get it on 360. It’s not as if the PS3 or 360 are super powerful- the tech in them is over 5 years old and most desktops produced within the last 4-5 years could easily run Generations even better than any current console.
The 3DS basically runs Wii level hardware with addional shader support- it doesn’t push as many polygons but is otherwise on the same level. Take a look at Resident Evil Revelations to see a 360/PS3 engine ported to 3DS. Sega accomplished Sonic Colors on similar level of hardware, so as long as they aren’t being lazy they should be able to pull off a direct port based on the Colors engine. Honestly, though, they’ll probably just cheap out and have the 3DS version be an all 2D game.
Wow they really dont want that game on the wii. oh well, at least the pc nutjobs will shut up
hahaha! PC and 3DS BUT NOT WII!!! XD!!!!
I thought SEGA said
“HD game only”
last time I checked the 3DS isn’t HD and the PC… unknown.
The Wii isn’t powerful enough for HD but the 3DS is more powerful than the Wii so it makes cense. I’m surprised about thew whole PC thing though, but at least it can work.
Ha, awesome!
PC= Personal Computer
PC= Project Cafe
¿What do you think?
[Update: It's been brought to my attention that PC may not mean Personal Computer, but may stand for Nintendo's new system codename "Project Cafe." Stay tuned...]
NOT ON PC!
That’s an amusing thought, but I somehow doubt it. I think they would know not to use the same acronym for two different things…unless they were deliberately being vague, but given how it looks like more of an internal document, I doubt it
Hoping for an NGP port too…. But if not, there will probably be some Sonic title on it at some point, probably next year…. and I do think PC means Personal Computer in this case, I believe that they have been hinting at it….
Lucas: Yeah, Sonic Retro’s “update” is bullshit.
Here’s why: Virtua Tennis 4, *already* announced for PC a long time ago, is on that same sheet, listed for–whaddaya know, a PC release, and for the Summer, no less! VT4 was already confirmed to come to the desktop via digital distribution and boxed product in March.
It’s rumor-mongering. Don’t overthink it.
-T
@Tristian: Yeah well you’ll never know until e3 I guess…
If SONIC GENERATIONS is on the New Nintendo… If I can wait, I’ll get it on the Nintendo HD, but If not, I’ll get It on the HD console anyways! XD
Anyone noticed that Modern Sonics act of green hill is a couple more minutes longer than Classic?
Also, I actually hope that when SEGA makes a Sonic game next, with friends being succsesfully fun to play as etc. I hope SEGA go back to creating Sonic games WITHOUT using fan input as much as they do nowadays…
reasons..
1. Since Unleashed, Sonic has been nothing but simple plain speed, with no challange
2. The Sonic Adventure games and heroes were fantastic, also giving more of a story, differnt characters to play as, and had (for Sonics case) better gameplay…
3. Sonic also had the ability to Spindash, a trademark move since 1992, ability to use items and although Sonic wasn’t as fast as today, the level design was still great for Sonic and his speed. Unlike Unleashed, Generations and Colours which were all liner speed fest level designs…
well to be honest, until I have played SG this year, and comparied the two gameplays that both Sonics offer (so far being Classic is Momentom and platforming, and Modern is Speed and.. yeah speed) I can personally decide what is best then..
Fanbase or SEGAs own ideas…
If a SEGA guy reads this comment: MODERN SONIC TIP ADD MORE PLATFORMING!
^_^
@blueblur:
Okay…?
@Blippa: Wii GOT LIKE 10 GAMES EXCLUSIVELY THAT NO ONE ELSE GOT. Everybody else needs a chance to play Sonic games. There doesn’t need to be a Wii port. 360/PS3 owners didn’t complain about the extreme lack of games, and no one else claimed that it was a cheap shot towards them. Wii owners need to be a little less self-concerned. This is ONE out of ELEVEN OR SO games that the Wii will miss. Plus, you could just get it on the PC.
@Blueblur: Maybe he’s gotten so fast, he doesn’t need the ability to spindash anymore. Although it would be cool to see “modern” Sonic use it again. Think about it. “classic” Sonic is shorter, and not quite as fast. “modern” Sonic is like an acrobat at warp speed (I’m sure you’ve seen the video of him spinning, sliding, flipping, drifting, and rolling all over Green Hill Zone). He’s a lot more aerodynamic and atheletic. Not to mention he’s gotten faster. He can get up to 100 mph from a standstill. He kind of lost the need for the spindash, as “classic” sonic needed it to get moving at a fast pace from a standstill.
@BrandonTH
…hence why I said “I’m not complaining, just genuinely curious.”
I’m only curious, from a commercial standpoint, what the motive for specifially excluding the Wii was, such as maybe a separate exclusive or something. Hey, I got the chance to play Unleashed on my sister’s 360 and loved it. I didn’t think my comment was that whiny.
I never said it was whiny.
I just think it’s odd how so many people are crying “foul” at this, when everyone but the Wii has missed out on so many games that were exclusive only to Wii. I read your comment and I know you said you were just curious. I was explaining it to you. Personally, I think Sega is letting others have a chance to play Sonic games to be fair to other console owners.
^@Blippa
One thing. If it’s on PC. I’m getting it. No exceptions…..Unless it’s an inferior port. In which case fuck it.
well im glad i bought a 3DS! but i do feel bad for people who only have a wii, considering i was in their same position for some other games.
@BrandonTH
I’m happy to see the series succeed, and if less platforms means better overall quality, I’m happy for them. But the inclusion of just about every other platform seems to go against that and I found it a little confusing.
OK, as long as there’s isn’t a blanket statement that all Wii owners (of which I am a happy member) are self-concerned
The fact that it’s specifically excluding Wii just makes me wonder if it’s because there’s another non-Olympic Wii game they haven’t announced yet. I’m not pushing for this because I don’t want to see quality shortchanged for quantity, but if they can do it and do it well? Yeah I’ll be thrilled.
I’m not sure that any commercial company would go extremely far to just be ‘fair’ to owners of separate consoles, given that business is primarily about revenue and statistics show the majority of platformer fans (Sonic included) tend to stick with Nintendo consoles, but I guess maybe some of the feedback on Unleashed helped with that. Also, they’re probably trying to make a ‘comeback’ that all gamers can see. Again this is all speculation on my part…I’m no business major.
Oh, and I could only get it on PC if I had one that was even remotely up-to-date
@blueblur
)
“Unlike Unleashed, Generations and Colours which were all liner speed fest level designs”
umm last time i checked colors had more platforming segments than speed. and for generations we don’t KNOW what the whole game will offer. look green hill is the only level we’ve seen so far so we can’t really assume the whole game will be a linear speed fest game. (especially seeing this is the first level of the game) i’m pretty sure later levels will offer more platforming and adventure feeling gameplay.(wouldn’t be surprised if half of those levels were adventure levels
3DS you say? Fucking bought (my wallet, it weeps). I’ll get the 360 version somewhere down the line when it hits the bargain bin because it’s not a brown shooter.
@Blippa:
That was insightful. Also, sorry if I made you think I said “all” Wii owners (I don’t remember saying “all”). There are some who are fine with this change in management. I’m not much of a Nintendo fan, but as far as the Wii is concerned, It would be pretty cool to see an adventure game where Sonic and Mario team up (outside of the olympics). It would be even better to see a third NiGHTS installment (I’m a NiGHTS fan ^ ^). What with all the return to retro, they’re sure to get it much closer to the original than NiGHTS Journey of Dreams.
@ Blippa:
Okay. . . . That was weird. .
http://www.tssznews.com/2011/05/17/why-we-may-never-see-a-proper-mario-sonic-platformer/
@BrandonTH
No worries, I’m not here to pick fights
I’d also love to see Mario and Sonic in a platformer if they could do it well but I don’t see how they could merge the gameplay styles without making it too generic like the Olympic games (hilarious that TSSZ just posted an article on that, it’s been my thought all along).
I’ve actually never played the original NiGHTS because I never had a Saturn…apparently I’m missing a lot. I almost got Journey of Dreams once but the GameStop employee told me it was pretty bad. Is it?
Hmm…Seems interesting. Well if Sega ever decides to show more gameplay of Sonic Generations again and since most people can’t wait until new gameplay is shown, I think Sega should show us a 3DS gameplay trailer of Sonic Generations before E3 and then when E3 comes they show us more levels and gameplay leaving us even more excited and satisfied in the end.
That’s good. Neither am I ^^
Kind of like a world meant for adventuring, but in 2D like Super Mario Brothers Wii and Sonic the hedgehog 4 Episode 1.
Oh well.) But the story is pretty good, It explains it in detail. It’s pretty fun to play, there’s a 2 player mode and an A-life system outside the game, unlockable extras, and It stays somewhat true to the original story. The music’s also pretty cool (but I prefer the originals). Overall: about a 7 out of 10. You might like it.
As far as the Idea goes, I think that Sega/Nintendo should have them both transported into another world that would serve as a “neutral” location
Okay. Get a saturn. Like NOW. You can get some pretty cool games like:
Sonic Racing
Sonic 3D Blast (Flickies Island)
Sonic Jam (but it’s more like a compilation with extras and hidden concept art)
NiGHTS into Dreams . . .
Christmas NiGHTS
and others
Now as far as JOD goes, I don’t own a Wii, but I’ve played it at my friend’s house.
The controls aren’t as smooth as the original, and it doesn’t quite have that same feel; They added a few new characters. The Nightmaren are all new (except Reala and Wizeman. I was looking forward to seeing Gillwing and Jackle in JOD
Cool but still getting it on x box.
Also, this still leaves ONE more announcement from sega! I heard they will announce it next month.
It can’t be sonic generations on 3ds because that was just announced. It can’t be m&s at the London games because that was announced. It can’t be sonic 4 episode 2 because that was announced back in march. So that leaves one thing : ) hopefully…
Sonic Generations 3DS so going to be a day one buy for me
Finally, after all these years! Now I can move on from raising chao for 7 years… and move on to PC generations!
I hope it does hit PC that would be nice
