Inside, Riley says WHAT about Sonic 4?
Another interview style video has surfaced from Sega’s recent pre-E3 event showcasing Sonic Generations. It’s embedded below and it again features Sega director Patrick Riley fielding questions.
It won’t be the video here that matters; it’s more what Riley says. We again see the same non-sequitur surface between Riley’s words and Sonic experiencing some trouble grinding in the Green Hill caves. But more important, Riley addresses a somewhat unrelated game: Sonic 4: Episode I. In response to question about that downloadable title missing the sense of speed, Riley said this, in part:
[....] We were trying to create a new, 2D experience with that…For Sonic 4: Episode I; we weren’t necessarily trying to recreate the exact feel of the Genesis. That’s why there’s a homing attack. So it wasn’t really Genesis style, momentum based gameplay. So, uh… (pause) But this time, you know, our goal from the beginning is very different.
Riley also appears to confirm there will be additional side missions in-game, on both modern and classic ends, and also explains what we’re seeing will be shown again at E3 next month. Take a look below. Thanks to krazeeKidd102 for sending this in. If you have news to share, be sure to share it with us by clicking Send News Tips at the top of every page.

So there will be missions? COOL! I just hope other characters can AT LEAST be playable for missions.
who gives a shit about sonic 4 anymore?
Hold on Classic Fans, don’t forget what SEGA said a couple months back “We will be fixing the physics for Episode 2″. They might add the Genesis feel for episode 2.
I knew that. Eversince Homing Attack was confirmed in Sonic 4, I could tell that the game is not aiming for a genesis feel:
”Sonic 4 is modern Sonic in classic level.”
”Sonic Generations is Classic Sonic in classic level.”
”and Generations is modern sonic in modern levels.”
Cats out of the bag!! Stoked for THIS game.
I give a shit about Sonic 4, so shut up. It wasn’t that bad of a game.
They have terrible PR….
-__-
Still, It seems no-one cares about Sonic 4 anymore.
So… Sonic Generations FTW.
“___ sucks”
“Shut up, does not”
“God, really? Can we please do without ONE argument in a topic revolving around Sonic?”
Forget the Sonic cycle, the Sonic Fan cycle is more pertinent and consistent a problem.
Great interview. I agree with what was stated- depending on the perspective you look at Sonic 4, nothing really needs to be fixed since the design behind the gameplay from the beginning wasn’t to replicate the sense of speed with gradual acceleration and pace of momentum like the Genesis Sonic had, but rather place a more modern Sonic with some modern abilities in a long awaited sequel. Still.. I don’t think it quite fit- the game felt like Sonic Rush without the ability to boost or perform combos.
I loved episode 1- the only grudge I have with it is that SEGA doesn’t have the right tools to ban legit cheaters(ha, and by this oxymoron I mean know for 100% certain someone cheated to attain their time) or delete modded times on the leaderboards. What sucks more is I have to go back and beat the times I played my ass off for since they wiped the leaderboard a few months after its release, and you can only re-upload times that you beat on top of the ones made before the leaderboard swipe. D;
Looking forward to Generations!
@darkgomugomu no one
I know this for a fact: If the classic portions of Sonic Generations didn’t look nearly as good as it does now, then this would’ve been a HUGE deal and people would’ve been tearing his words to shreds. However, the classic portions (from a visual perspective) is nearly PERFECT, therefore, this is nothing but PR babble to cover up for Dimps’ mistakes.
In short: It’s not because they weren’t aiming for a classic Genesis feel. IT’S BECAUSE THEY DIDN’T KNOW HOW.
In other news, the grind rail incident just made me laugh hard. How the hell can you switch directions ON A FREAKING GRIND RAIL!? XD
I don’t blame SEGA for how bad Sonic 4 may or may not have been. I blame Dimps, who seems to hold no responsibility for the apparently “piece of sh!t” game that THEY – not Sonic Team – made.
But I can’t wait for episode 2!
Like the fact that missions are back. I really do like the missions. Also hoping they add to the plot, although that’s not likely to be the case…
Yes I heard the title screen theme completely through now! It sounds great! =D
I liked Sonic 4 and am looking forward to episode 2. I like Generations MORE of course but hey I also like Generations more then whatever the hell expectations you guys had for Sonic 4. lol Generations is just much more creative. =D (In an ironic way too xD)
The bigger news here is whatever is happening on those rails at at around 4:21.
This game is even more awesome than last time I saw it!
How do you do that on the rails?
@KnucklesChaotix actually i enjoyed the game quite a lot.
it’s just that in light of this game, no one really cares about sonic 4 anymore. And i dont mean episode 1, i mean the concept.
The classic style gameplay is what I believe Sonic 4 should be. If Sonic 4 ep. 2 is not like Generations classic gameplay then I could see why people would say screw Sonic 4 because you just don’t know how it could get any better than this. Now if Sega was to make Sonic 4 like this they would probably have to start all over with the Sonic 4 series (I know it’s not really a series but I just don’t know what else I can call it lol). But I don’t think Sonic 4 ep. 2 would wow me more than Generations did…
@darkgomugomu Well the idea of Generations does overshadow Sonic 4 but, I still hope SEGA doesn’t cancel it. Besides it night give us a nice summer release to pass the time. Its nice to know that I’m not the only one who thought Sonic 4 was GOOD.
Hey I have a question about Sonic Generations. If Sonic and his friends get sent to the past and meet Classic Sonic in Green Hill, does that mean that all the events happening in that era from past games are going on? For example when Sonic and his friends go to the Dreamcast era, in SA2, will he see Eggman destroy the moon? Will he also find Shadow who at the time wanted to destroy Sonic? Also, since the game will have the Classic era, Megadrive era, and the Dreamcast Era, does that mean we will see Megadrive Sonic and Dreamcast Sonic?
@sonic52789 Good question.That would be hell.Modern Sonic would have to avoid to change the past by meeting his “dreamcast” self and all the other dreamcast era peoples.And Classic Sonic would be like “Did I really have to go trough all that when I grow up?!?!”
@darkgomugomu
To be fair, Sonic Colors doesn’t live up to this game anymore either. XD We might just see another unbeatable Sonic game. XD I mean seriously the concept is too brilliant and special! ^^
PS:
I think in the rails he’s just stuck on it cuz it’s a beta so when it twirled upside down he didn’t fall off.
Too bad they don’t make the rails like in SA2 were there weren’t so many, they were creatively placed, were smaller, and shorter. Not only that but they were organized in a way that was like a new way of platforming and you had to use skill to move around across them. :3 Ever since Sonic Heroes, it just wasn’t the same. XD oh well.
@sonic52789
Well the MegaDrive is the same as Genesis, so that’s Classic Sonic.
The DreamCast Sonic I believe won’t be there. Tho I wish he would. He probably won’t due to him being voiced by Ryan Drummond and SEGA wanting to avoid hiring him temporarily for the role as it might make the Ryan elitists question why they don’t bring him back permanently. Just like Classic Sonic is mute and like he has a different design due to the artist, it all breaks the 4th wall as design and voice are things that changed based on promotional style but not the timeline, thus DreamCast Sonic most likely would be Ryan Drummond IF he appeared. I could be wrong tho.
The DreamCast era will likely just show Modern and Classic Sonic both take on the roles of Adventure Sonic as they go through the history from beginning to end and probably alter it for this game only. =P
Sorry if this is confusing. XD
@Silverjay323
I liked Sonic 4 as well. Not as good as Generations but not bad either. Actually, the majority are with you. 3/4 of the fanbase liked Sonic 4. But 1/4 of the fanbase disliked it and they disliked it with a passion, so they’re kind’ve aggressive. And those who like a certain Sonic game know better than to mess with someone who dislikes it, cuz the one who dislikes it usually end up insulting you for liking it or start ranting on how crappy it was, killing your buzz. ^^;
Don’t worry about it. Like what you want. It’s your choice. =)
6:04-6:10 is a revamped sonic “stage clear” music! WOOT! Also, to the idiot recording, SHOW US MORE GAMEPLAY AND STOP SHWOING US THE DUDES FACE!!!
6:26 Full version of the Revamped title music
They’ve taken the Sonic 1 & 2 Credits version of the theme rather than the Title Theme used in those games which is pretty cool.
Also sonic can defy Gravity on those rails lol. Hope thats fixed. But in any case I just keep getting more and more excited for this game. Im glad to hear that missions will be in the game to add a bit more replay value. I hope theres sort of an Act 1 & Act 2 for both Modern & Classic Sonic in each stage aswell. Classic Sonic’s stage seems to go by pretty quick in green hill. I know its only the first level but still it would be nice to have an extra act or a longer level.
I’m actually somewhat glad that this isn’t for Wii. The Wii would never be able to handle the stuff you see in that video, and if they were focusing on porting it to Wii, it wouldn’t be as good of a game on any console.
wait did he say this has been in development for 2 years??…………………..That means these bastards have been snickering about this since 2009?? Man that’s a lot of work. ME WANT THIS GAME.
yay! the real sonic music is back! ^_^ sigh then SEGA will remove it in future games -_-
did crush40 stop making music for sega or what? Cause SU and SC music is not sonic music AT ALL! Infact I only liked the main theme tune… the main menu theme was uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuugllllyyy X_X
“this is the first time we’ve been able to go back and redo that music.”
didnt they re-do green hill for SA2? and if Sonic Battle and Sonic Advance 3′s Sunset Hill counts… B) ANYWAYS, this game is looking great. I cant wait for it. : D
Come on show more levels!
@zeroro
I was wondering about that too. Maybe they meant something specific that they did with these that they didn’t do before. o0 Maybe they meant “Redo” the way they redid the level rather than merely remixing or remaking it. But idk how that.. would… be? lol
@blueblur No I believe they still make music for Sega because remember they did Knight of the Wind and Fight the Knight which was in 2009. So it wasn’t too long ago and they also did their own version of Free from Sonic Free Riders. So I honestly do think that they still make music for Sega.
@blueblur
Crush 40 is a specific combination of people in a group that does themes and such. Certain members from the group play, compose and direct music throughout the series.
ALL music that’s in a Sonic games is “Sonic music”. That’s WHY it’s called Sonic Music. lol And it always sounds good save a couple tracks here and there. Genre wise, Sonic’s always been diverse. In Unleashed it used a lot of orchestra but had a lot of Sonic style to it as did Colors. In fact, I believe Jun Senoue (famous guitarist of Crush 40) directed the music of Sonic Colors.
Crush 40 said they’d be making something for a big new Sonic project that was secret, so I assume they’re working on this. We haven’t heard the full theme song yet, just the title screen theme (Which is the theme of Sonic 1/Sonic 2 which a part of their ending them mixed in with their title themes to make this game’s title screen theme lol)
Also, the only other music we’ve heard is 2 versions of Green Hill Zone, music that was in the first level of Sonic 1. So you can’t say THAT’S not Sonic music. xD
