Think You’ve Seen All There is of Green Hill? Think Again
It appears the engine to Sonic Generations has been tweaked, if new video from GameTrailers is any indication.
Converted to YouTube by Woun, the two part preview, below, is accompanied by the narration of Patrick Riley and his phrases many know and love…phrases like “momentum based platforming” and “speed as a reward.”
The thing is, this time Riley may be spot on. The speed boost on Green Hill inclines appears to have been fixed, among other physics issues a few noticed when Generations gameplay was first revealed to the world.
On the modern side, we see more of the Modern Green Hill, a peek at Modern Sonic’s combo system, and in a moment of fitting irony, Sonic boosts off the course and to his death right as Riley explains how the cave area “shows an important part of the team’s design philosophy.” The comedic timing couldn’t be better if they tried.
Watch the video below (Now UPDATED with working links.) Thanks to everyone who sent this in, and Woun esepcially for the Youtube conversion (at least, while it lasted!)

Love it!
I’m loving this game to more I see of it. Also, I’m so glad that Classic Sonic does the “I’m waitin’…” pose again! Always loved it when I was a kid.
Whoops… I mean’t, “[the] more I see it.”
I’m so hyped over the footage that I can’t even type! lol
…Too much green. Needs more… city.
Aaaaaand Sonic 1/2 theme at the end of the videos, especially Modern Sonic’s! ;D
Looks like Modern Sonic’s Green Hill is also less bland and more platforming than we thought. Since it’s still the first level it’s also still the most plain… so… then… the future levels are definately no worry then. =D
Love the stage clear jingle and the stage title cards. =)
Classic Sonic’s Idle actions are present and ALL of Classic Sonics moves control the exact same as in classic games. =D You can look up and down and “down+jump” to spindash. :3 The ONLY problem was and still is that when he jumps it’s like he sticks to the floor a little, but it doesn’t look like it’s a big deal that’d bother me. =P
PS:
1:32 = Sonic Adventure boxart pose! ;D

Listen very closely at the end of the modern sonic video and you can hear that the title theme is a remix of the Sonic 1 & 2 theme. Its only brief but you just hear it start up before the video is cut off.
Everything just looks awesome in this game. Cannot wait for it. Plus cannot wait to see what levels are to be revealed
.
I want this game to be 2 games in , please sega dont make act 1 classic and then force us into modern in act 2, it will just kill the effect for me, that sonic classic looks unbelievable, the grind railz kill it for me in modern sonic but modern sonic looks gorgeous in this to apar t from grinding
SImply the best
better than all the rest
An S and an A rank for those terrible play throughs? This game’s gonna end up easy isn’t it? :v
@Skai Cyan: Thats what people said about Colors but it turns out getting S ranks wasn’t easy in that game.
0:21 in first video SIIIIIIIIIIIIIICCK! I want that as my wallpaper!
Although @2:13 there is definitely some automation there…when classic Sonic jumps forward, he quickly “lands” and goes down the track.
And anyone else think that in the 2nd video modern Sonic sounds a bit more higher pitched? Listen to his grunts when he moves…
@Skai Cyan You do realize these will probably be the VERY FIRST levels in the game right?
this is probably the most unimportant part of the game but, i really like the interface ^_^’
ugh, green hill looks gorgeous, i can’t wait to see some other stages :3
@Dan
No.
2:15-2:16 Wait a moment…a scripted scene…in my classic Sonic? BLASPHEMY!
This game is awesome
Menu screen select sound when Classic Sonic jumps… Anyone notice it besides me?
This game have the best title card I’ve seen so far.I wonder if the 3ds version will be as good looking as this version.
OMG!!! The framerate looks nice and smooth!!! I rlly hope they can make the 360 version 60fps!!! And also, the modern green hill stage music got an update i hear much more guitair and it sounds more like sonic adventure music now!! And im glad to hear the old “Stage Clear” Jingle from SA2 and Heroes! I cant wait 4 this game!! I Hope there would be at least 21 levels (7 from each era)!! or 30 (10 from each era)!!!
i so hope that we will see Chemical Plant Zone redone…this has got to be the most awesome Sonic Game ever made.
The levels i want from each era
Genesis (Sonic 1 2 CD 3)
Green Hill
Emerald Hill
Angel Island
Marble Zone OR Marble Garden Zone
Hydrocity
Chemical Plant
Casino Night Zone

Hidden Palace
Death Egg
Modern Era (06 Unleashed Colors)
Wave Ocean
Crisis City

Uncurling is no more. That is all. Win.
Also, why does Sonic squeak like a cat when he gets hit…?
Lol I watched them bth at the same time
@krazeeKidd102
Yeah right give me a break BLASPHEMY?? There were definitely scripted sequences in the classic Sonic games LOL!!! Chemical Plant Zone, Oil Ocean Zone, Metropolis Zone, Hydrocity Zone, Carnival Night Zone, Ice Cap Zone, Launch Base Zone, Death Egg Zone (S&K), etc…
O.M.G. Did you see those beautiful graphics??!!??
I am now even more determined to own this game (Yay for having a PS3), and the main levels I am really wishing are there from the classic era are Ice Cap Zone and Mushroom Hill Zone. (Ice Cap was one of the prettiest, and Mushroom Hill…giant mushrooms, what more could you want?) 8D

Yes!!
I was one of the peeps who sent this in!!
(Just felt like sharing!)
“an important part of the design philosophy…”
Sonic: “WOOAAAAH”
“…which is *cough* NOT to kill players, but…”
That is amazing
0:55. HAA. love it
Release a Demo on XBOXLive and PSN already! <3
Your fans will love SEGA forever
Wait a sec…does the score screen at the end imply there won’t be any E ranks??
Aww man, everything about the E-ranking in Unleashed was comedy gold
There were problems with the Classic part before? Geez man, im content with just this.
But this is looking so amazing. I forgot that sonic levels weren’t linear anymore.
What i always appreciated about unleashed was that, even though the boost makes you invincible and is hard to run out of energy, you have to react on the fly too, and once you mastered a level at full speed, it’s just awesome to play through and shave off seconds off your best time.
I cant wait for this game to come out.
P.S. love the idle classic animation
WOW!!! So looking forward to this!
Just so you people know, there WERE a few short automaticed areas in Classic Sonic games. I specifically remember one in Lava Reef even. lol
And why would anyone want to see what other stages there are? I probably only want to see ONE other stage just to get the idea of the diverse styles. But that’s it. Think about it, with any new Sonic game we don’t know what stage comes next. Well the same is true for this game only whatever stage comes next is a stage we’ll recognize. But we don’t know which stages they chose or in what order. After I beat Green Hill I’mma be like “What stage did they choose next? OMG LABYRINTH ZONE!” then after I beat THAT I’ll be like “NOW what stage did they choose? CHEMICAL PLANT ZONE!! 8D” and it’ll be like that after EVERY SINGLE LEVEL IN THE GAME! We don’t usually get that in other Sonic games! This is a rare opportunity! I don’t want to ruin this SPECIAL suprise factor this game has by finding out what all the levels are before it’s out. xD
@TheSpaz179
The jump sound for Classic Sonic is from the jump sound in Sonic CD.
@omachipthewisp96
You said each era. You forgot the Adventure series Era.
@darkgomugoma
THANK YOU! XD
Oh yeah…
@Blippa
Well if there IS only a D-rank as the lowest rank it takes place of the E-rank. Maybe they can still add that comedy. Tho they didn’t do it in Colors. Idk why. It was hilarious. lol Tho how can you play a messed up version of the stage clear music they’re using? It’s too short. (Unless like Unleashed it plays something afterwards until you press the button to continue. =p)
@KeigoNiwa:
YES!!!! the interface looks so awesome, the colors: red, yellow and blue TwT is so Sonic
Love the look of Classic gameplay and design of Retro Sonic
Love the new paths in Modern gameplay of New Sonic
AND i love the hedgehog engine x3!!!
Music WIN too!
yay! the clouds move in the background! i hated how in unleashed the skies were a still painting. anyway guys, its not just classic sonic levels in the game. there are gonna be stages from the adventure series, and even in the past 5 or 6 years! (Heroes, 06) heres hoping for crisis city!
BTW why are the videos now BLOCKED? it says Viacom blocked it!
What the hell does Viacom have to do with Sonic Generations?
I believe Viacom owns Gametrailers, which is where the vids came from.
I can’t watch the videos! Whenever I click on them it says “This video contains content from Viacom, who has blocked it on copyright grounds”.
NVM, just watched the modern gameplay on gametrailers. IT LOOKS AWESOME! Also, SEGA… THANK YOU for making Sonic able to FALL OFF RAILS AGAIN!!!!!
The video has now been fixed. =)

@Tristan Oliver – Oh, Thanks!
I have a question about this game:
Say that an Unleashed stage, Rooftop Run, say, is in Generations (hopefully). Will the modern gameplay be the exact same level or not? I hope not….
My prediction for the final zone: Super Sonic & Super Classic Sonic vs. Eggman & Dr. Robotnik (Classic Eggman)…..called it!
@omachipthewisp96:
I noticed you mentioned Sonic CD, but didn’t include any levels from it. may I make a suggestion?
Stardust speedway. All timelines ^^
Act one: Past.
Act two: Present
Act three: Good Future
@KnucklesChaotix – I doubt it. The Classic Sonic level in Sonic Generations in Green Hill Zone isn’t the same thing. So I assume that each level will be new.
I will be honest — I felt like I was going to whizz myself when I saw “classic Sonic” go through a 2.5D corkscrew turn in the middle of the level. The camera MOVED and everything. As a “newer” fan who’s also played the opening levels of Sonic 1 and 2 (and very much enjoys SatAM), this is EPIC.
