But Still Calls It “A Celebration of Sonic’s Portable History”
Hoping for some Underground Zone remix in the 3DS edition of Sonic Generations? What about a rendition of the classic Sunset Park chase scene? Or how about some Aqua Planet?
Good luck.
In a joint interview posted on both The Sonic Stadium and Segabits, Takashi Iizuka says the development team behind the 3DS version will only focus their portable re-imaginations on titles for the Game Boy Advance and later.
“For the 3DS we wanted to go with systems of more recent memory,” Iizuka said. “So we are more focused on levels from the GBA and DS.”
Despite that sharp cutoff, Iizuka said the 3DS version “is a celebration of Sonic’s portable history. As such it only makes sense that we keep that history on a portable system. ”
There are other items of note in the interview, such as the re-affirmation of more than 2 acts per world. Whether those are pure acts or acts masking as mission stages remains to be seen. More can be read at the link cited above. Thanks to krazeeKidd102 for tipping us.

So, Iizuka is saying “Fuck YOOUUUUU” to the Game Gear fans, but still has the audacity to say that this is a celebration of Sonic’s portable history? That’s such a contradictory statement. Granted, I never really liked the GG games, but the old-skool GG fans deserve some love, too. Dammit, Sega!!!!
gba =D
CHAOS ANGEL ZONE….. or else >.>
that is all :3
no matter what stages are released for BOTH versions of the game. there are gonna be disappointed people. IMHO Sonic games have created some of the most memorable, and in some cases just incredible stages out of any game that’s ever been out. They’re all iconic really…
@Keigo Niwa
And that’s why its all the more tragically that sonic has only come this far since 1991. I mean the Sonic magic was really strong up to 98 because the Sega dudes focused design efforts on smoother mechanics. I mean the fact that sonic 1 was designed to be a fast game meant that they were all ready a popular alternative to mario. SO If They were in a leauge beyond mario (sonic Adventure 2 vs any 3d mario in 2001), why would they focus on outdoing mario over anything? THey could create a series that rivals something like pixar or the action/platforming games. And why was it always like Sega Japan/Us trying to do it by themselves. Why not ask like John Romero or Tim Schafer or John fucking lasseter or fuckin ANYONE like that to help them bring their already billion dollar franchise into the 2000s and make it something?
But there is always the future. Hopefully not only fans but sega’s own reason will enure good sonic games. I mean we as fans owe it to the Sonic Team for making the classics and we should never pressure them to keep things the same when a little innovation could lead to a whole new direction for the series.
Too bad we won t see any of the SMS\GG level… That won’t stop me to draw modern version of old level on deviantart^^
