And at “Relatively Low Cost,” It Appears
In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Sega West head Mike Hayes confirms the company’s flagship hedgehog will indeed be a part of the upcoming Nintendo Wii U when it’s expected to release next year.
It’s how that’s sort of in question. We neglect to use the term new immediately because, as you’ll see in the quote below, while the case of Aliens: Colonial Marines almost certainly suggests a straight port, whether that will hold true for future Sonic titles is up in the air:
That controller is absolutely brilliant and we have to think of innovative ways to use it. We’re doing high definition Sonics, we’re doing obviously Aliens: Colonial Marines, so you can bring them across, and that’s relatively low cost, which is good news. Then you spend your money on how do you use that controller effectively to make it unique and differentiate it.
If nothing else, Hayes’s words open the door for a consolidation and unification of sorts in Sonic games, with single titles being launched across all major platforms instead of several titles specific to an array of systems. Thanks to all who sent this in via our News Tips system.

Sold.
Tristan, this may explain what he was talking about:

If that’s the case, then the rumors were true.
HD Sonic Colors?? =))
So these somehow don’t count as ports? Where’s mah Generations U? Ok let’s make a deal, if you release Generations on the U, I’ll buy whatever HD rerelease you put up (even if it’s ’06). /grasping_at_straws
Seriously though, I see a fairly broad movement like this coming. It makes it easier to sell your Assassin’s Creed 3′s, Batman 2′s, Ninja Gaiden 3′s, and Darksiders 2′s if people can go back an download their respective prequels.
@Jim-x
If Wii U has an upscaler for Wii games, a rerelease of colors won’t even be necessary. I THINK it does, but don’t quote me on that.
I wonder what the first NEW Sonic game on the Wii U would be!
^ Don’t start…
still think any sonic game should be released on all consoles instead of leaving some out, just adapt them to the advantages of each… still annoyed i couldn’t play colours… Spose i have generations but still lol
dame it people remeber this buy the wii u and sonic just make it worst people will not buy becuase this has to do new story book or unleashed 2 with this wii u
O coolz. Too bad I’m not getting the Wii U. PS4 ftw!
Will whatever Wii U Sonic game comes to the console I hope it’s longer than Sonic Colors. There is no denying the game can be finished within a day. Heck you could finish some of the acts within about 3 minutes.
Well…just don’t blow it by getting shit rolling out with issues…take advantage of the system hardware and make it good….impress us lol
or a better idea: make a new sega console and only realese sonic games there, srsl im tired of getting every damn console to play a sonic game
Or they release a dreamcast 2 with like emulators of every system on it.
I don’t see what the big deal is. If they port old games then that’s news, since we don’t know if they would or not, and sure it’d be cool if they did.
BUT, making NEW games on it is sort’ve a given. I can’t see Sonic not being sold on a new console. He’s on everything there is after SA2′s release. Camecube, GBA, GBA:SP, Xbox, PS2, Wii, DS, PSP, PS3, 360, 3DS, so I’d assume he’d be on PSV and Wii U as well and even that new Xbox console that they’re supposedly gonna reveal next year. =P
@idunno
Well then get every console to play OTHER games too instead of obsessing over JUST Sonic. o0
Besides, more ppl have access to Sonic this way.
Also, it’s not a good idea to start making consoles again if you don’t have money to spend on consoles without stealing from the budget used to make the games better.
They revealled getting back into the arcade business but when they reveal getting back into the console business THEN it’ll stop being annoying when ppl spread word of a “Dreamcast 2″ like some even did in the comments above. XD (Plus, “Dreamcast 2″??? Seriously how unoriginal for a name. The DreamCast is so old. The Wii isn’t a “Gamecube 2″. I’d be thinking of a NEW name for a new SEGA Console. XD
probably a storybook game XD
Just put a one-shot Sonic game on the Wii U as Sonic’s first Wii U title. Do what you can with this new technology, collect the feedback, and improve on what was good and what was bad.
LOL the Wii U is going to flop. We are only about 5 years into this generation and Nintendo already has to release a new console meaning when the PS4 and Xbox 102451516 come out they will be behind again. And the controller is freaking huge…
@supascourge
Yeah just like the Kinect flopped… oh wait no it didn’t.
Tell me how a console that’s like a Wii, which was more successful than 360 and PS3, AND is also like a stronger version of 360 and PS3 can possibly flop?
And 5 years? Hi, how long were GameCube, PS2 and Xbox out before Wii, PS3 and Xbox 360 came out? Because I believe this generations’ consoles have actually been out longer without being replaced at this current time than their predecessors. It just doesn’t seem like it because the older you get the faster time flies. XD
The controller design is in the concept stages. I don’t recall PS3 ACTUALLY selling those boomerang controllers. Just saying. They might come up with something clever and more comfortable. Tho if there’s a screen involved then I hope that part is bigger. I hate tiny screens. That’s why I don’t pay much attention to handhelds. If the screen’s gonna be small I’ll never use it and will only use my TV. lol
As solely a Nintendo console consumer I would like them to make a compilation of Sonic ’06 and the HD version of Sonic Unleashed ported to the WiiU. Maybe have the two Sonic Rivals games as unlockables. Is that asking too much?
@FoxBoy
…There were GBA SP games?
lol
Wii U: a port machine Nintendo must expect the PS3 and 360 to be sticking around for a good long while, their hopes of being a console with AAA multiplatform games will fall apart if Sony or Microsoft launch a new console in the next 3 years, they will into the same problem the Wii has had with multiplatform games.
