A Closer Peek at the Special Stage
Via the Argentinian website Emerald Power and originally from Famitsu it appears, we have a few more shots of Sonic Generations for the 3DS to share.
This set is important because it shows off our first clean look at the Special Stage, which is pretty blatantly derived from Sonic Heroes. There are a couple more peeks at Green Hill Zone as well.
All that is in the gallery below.

Environments look so empty.
Then again it’s new hardware and Sega probably gave Dimps little to no dev time.
They hired dimps?
Remember when Dimps made GOOD 2D Sonic games?
Cool, I always enjoyed the special stages in Heroes even though I often lost all feeling in my thumb after mashing the X button continuously in rapid succession for five minutes. Still, the result you would achieve was a concoction of flawless speed and skill – which always makes you feel good about yourself.
ICYDK, the heroes special stages wera also the first of their kind in a sonic game to feature boosting
. Innovation comes in half steps. But then we got shadow.
@tailsthehedgehog: You realise all you had to do was hold the boost button down? =P
What the hell happened to Sonic Advance-quality games?
The 4th screenshot shows proof of uncurling, except you don’t have a homing attack this time, so you’re pretty much fucked even though the game launched you in the air to begin with.
Tristan Oliver, your next poll should be “Do you think Sonic Generations 3DS will fail?” or “Are you willing to buy the 3DS version of Sonic Generations despite significant flaws?” I think it’s a good idea.
These images aren’t new… I saw them a week ago…
Wow. I wonder if Sega’s even trying for this one. Er, maybe it’s Dimps’ fault, IDK.
*Remembers Sonic Advance and wonders why Dimls can’t do that now*
*Dimps
The special stages look pretty good! I really liked the ones in Heroes (if only you didn’t get stuck on the ceiling so much though…).
I probably won’t be getting a 3DS for a while. If the console version doesn’t have any true special stages though, I will be sad panda.
Still not interested.
…Rush and Rush Adventure are looking REALLY good right now…
One could say by the special stage screenshots that whoever is playing the game found getting the first Chaos Emerald really hard.
Regarding the bottom screen, why would you want to blatantly let the player know when the act is going to end and how far you are from it? Maybe it would make sense for certain kinds of missions but for the most part it’s like watching an epic action movie with a countdown timer in the corner. Really kills the experience.
AJBSONIC has never played NSMB.
@ Mike: I always played as Luigi.
“Help Weegee!”
“Hey, you!”
“I’mm-a-back!”
soni: Yeah… I’m playing Sonic Advance 1 right
They don’t look too bad reminds me of the Heroes Special STages and why are these not included on the PS3 and Xbox versions? (the special stages I mean?)
I m sure the 3DS could handle modern 3D levels with view from behind…
@Truesonic: If you payed close attention at the City Escape trailer, a Red Ring (the ones featured in Sonic Colours to collect the Chaos Emeralds) is seen during Classic Sonic’s part (when the GUN truck drives from the foreground in a 2D/3D perspective).
I think it’s safe to say that the Chaos Emeralds will return and possible Super Sonic as well (hopefully like in Colours in midlevel at 50 rings). Special Stages would most likely be mini-stages like in Colours, or they might be Sonic 2/Heroes styled, or possibly another game.
Or possibly a different Special Stage for each Chaos Emerald to represent different Sonic games, now that you think about it…
