All of your favorite Genesis tunes, plus special surprises
Famitsu by way of TheDailyDL has confirmed the announcement of a “Sonic the Hedgehog 1 & 2″ soundtrack compilation in celebration of Sonic’s 20th Anniversary. That’s not to say this is like Sega’s other 20th Anniversary soundtrack releases, oh no – rising above and beyond the typical “reprint existing music on a new CD”, this new soundtrack release has genuine historic significance:
Apart from the ingame music, the compilation will also come with a reprint of the original Sonic 1 demotape of the games’ composer Masato Nakamura (of DREAMS COME TRUE), as well as a recording of Sonic 2′s demotape and several other bonus tracks.
If you were unaware, when Dreams Come True bassist Masato Nakamura composed the music for Sonic 1 and Sonic 2, he created the music in his personal studio using his full suite of resources as a musician. The final product was sent to Sega on cassette tape, and Sega’s sound engineers would then take the music on those cassettes and translate it in to something that could be played on the Genesis. This soundtrack compilation will feature Masato’s original, pre-MIDI studio recordings, telling us once and for all what Green Hill Zone was really supposed to sound like.
Unfortunately, as of yet this soundtrack has only been announced for release in Japan – but keep your fingers crossed regarding a North American release.

…Wow.
That’s actually really awesome.
(Also, capitalize the title, please.
)
Bet it sounds even more like Dreams of an Absolution.
Finally, a soundtrack release actually worth buying!
I remember someone talking about that tape on Retro, asking is it anywhere on Internet. Well, I guess it will.
I have no words for this. Just… AWESOME!!
I’ve always wanted to hear what the original melody of the Sonic music was supposed to be before the music was run through a Sega sound chip XD oh happy day
*crosses fingers*
It’s about time we get to hear the music that, instead of going from high quality to 16-bit quality, will go from 16-bit to high quality, and be OFFICIAL! 8D Since it’s actually the original before translated on Genesis/MegaDrive. =3
Here’s to hoping someone uploads it to youtube. XD
I’ll be looking at blackblur, TRUESonic and SonicKai and a few others. XD
AWESOME!!!!!!1!!!!1!1!1!!!!!!!!47!!!!!
Dreams Come True. I love that band….
I can’t wait to hear the demotapes. DO WANT.
Man, sega is really releasing a lot of soundtracks this year. Can’t wait
Well, i have a question, but first i have to say… i don’t speak english very well, and there is something that i dont understand.
the soundtrack copilation of Sonic 1 & 2, are remakes from the music of those games? or are simply a cd with the original music from the games?
@Gonzalo – The soundtrack will have all the original music from Sonic 1 and 2, with some bonus tracks too. =)
April Fools was two months ago!
In addition to generations PS3, I’m getting colours and unleashed for the wii. I also wanna get either rings or knight… which one is better?
This excites me.. greatly
Im so happy the original demo tapes come in this.
YYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Holy ship-in-a-bottle that is awesome
In speaking of Masato Nakamura, I honestly wish he could compose music for a Sonic game one last time. I think he was the best composer out of any of the Sonic games on the Genesis/Mega Drive and it would have been nice for him to return for Generations… In fact, I love “Dreams Come True” altogether!
In addition to generations PS3 and unleashed PS3, I’m getting colours wii. I also wanna get either secret rings or black knight… which one is better?
@Shan: Didn’t you ask that already on some other article? Quit spamming.
As long as it doesn’t sound like some new-age crap with that vocal distortion thing.
I’m so going to buy this, and play GHZ all day long!
If the cover is super classy I’ll buy it day one perch
@shan Sonic and the secret rings is better
@Shan the hedgehog
That’s a tough call. On the one hand, SotR has better music and more original stages, but it has progression issues. While BK has better built stages, more playable characters and a nicer story, it suffers from poor shake recognition during the ‘Vs Character’ fights. They both suffer from samey missions and piss poor controls (until you level up anyways) though. The party mode in SotR is decent, nothing to write home about, but scores better than BK’s battle mode. The unlockables in both games are pretty similar, but good for nostalgia in either case.
I personally would go with BK, but if I suggest you at least play whichever one you don’t end up getting.
Thanx to everyone, I’m thinking I should get black knight. Also, my mom won’t let me get this compilation soundtrack thing…..
I never knew the original demo tracks where made with real instruments, I thought it was just gonna be demo’s of Mega Drive music, like all those different sounding tracks from the Sonic 2 beta.
Now I really can’t wait to get this, I wanna hear the real version of Star Light Zone!
This does sound really cool, but until I can actually find the soundtracks for Sonic 06 and Super Mario Galaxy 2, I’ll be good. (I do know that you can find them on ebay, but they are priced a little high.) That said I am really excited to at least hear Green Hill in the way it was supposed to be.
Never having realized the original soundtracks came from larger and more expansive songs, I’m looking forward to this release immensely.
In General, I really do love these music remixes. They show the Sonic Community how fans can play an active role in shaping Sonic’s colorful musical past. Re imagining those great songs will always bring a smile o my face.
I have to say I’m genuinely excited about this. Can’t wait to hear these albums.
aaah so the mystery of green hill zone’s original sound will finally be cleared! good work dear watson XP
Most people want to hear Green Hill Zone, I want to hear Scrap Brain Zone XD. I love that tune.
@Pointlessname:
I know what you mean. Personally, I’d love to hear an instrumental demo for Labriynth Zone. That always was my favorite track as a kid.^^
So that’s how they made music for Genesis? I just assumed they made from scratch on some kind of soundboard or something :O
I’m not afraid to say that I think Sonic 1′s soundtrack is probably the worst Sonic soundtrack from any Sonic game so far, except MAYBE Shadow The Hedgehog. Star Light Zone was the only decent track in my opinion, and the entire soundtrack is really slow and unenthusiastic. Scrap Brain is almost intolerable to me.
Wow, this might be worth looking into! I wanna hear this badly, haha!
A demo of the cd, now!! XD
(EDIT – We have our 50,000th comment!! Noku, check your E-Mail! -T)
@n00neimp0rtant
Wow, I’ve never heard anyone say THAT before. (Trying my best to type genuine surprise.) Tell me why you think so, is it simply because they’re so slow, do you just dislike the overall feel of them, or is it something else?
