Stock in Japan Dips Almost 5 Percent
The corporate mothership that oversees Sega, Sega Sammy Holdings, is feeling the investor pinch from an attack last week–an attack that the company now acknowledges has impacted some 1.3 million customers who hold accounts on the Sega Pass service.
An article on the Reuters website includes an apology from a Sega Japan spokesperson, along with a remark that reads, “We want to work on strengthening security.” It is reassured that credit card data was not compromised in the attack, though other data like names, E-Mail addresses, birth dates, and encrypted passwords were.
The attack affected the Sega Pass service, which was a requirement for members of Sega’s forums to use. Both the forums and the main service remain offline as of this article’s publication.
Reuters also reports this news adversely impacted Sega Sammy’s stock on Japanese markets. The stock tumbled down 4.9 percent from Friday’s close, but has since recovered somewhat, down now less than 2 percentage points as of this article’s publication.

Comforting to know that many people actually had an account in the first case. Uncomforting to know that chances are I’m one of those affected
I’m so happy I’m not affected.
at least Sega told us sooner instead of Sony who took a few days…
Encrypted passwords Sega Does what Sony doesn’t
Why attack Sega? It’s pretty useless
Hopefully I don’t start getting spammed after this… I don’t even use my SEGA Pass… I’m not too worried, though. Meh.
I had forgotten I even had a Sega Pass until this happened. So…thanks hackers…I guess. You can go fuck off now.
@Gozruck
Harvesting data to sell to super shady mobsters.
This is why I like LastPass. Even if they decrypt my password all they’ll get is a random stream of symbols and characters.
Lastpass was hacked around the same time as PSN wasn’t it?
LuckilY I’m not affected.
This is getting scary now. First Sony, now SEGA…
I hope every company out there is trying to beef up their security the best they can right now because it looks like these attacks are really getting out of hand nowadays.
To be honest, this is a type of attack that seems to have no sense. Sega did not have any credit card numbers at their site, so basically the site could have been hacked either for mail adresses (passwords were encrypted, so let’s just assume they didn’t get them) or for fun. The fun-hackers would rather put something weird on the site than download a list of data, when the e-mail hackers… well, last time I checked e-mail lists were really cheap. So either they want to decrypt passwords, sell adresses for unadequate money or it makes no sense to me.
Well it would appear this attack was bad for fans and stockholders. Is hacking corporate websites a new fad?
These attacks are getting out of control…. I never expected someone to attack SEGA PASS…
I got my email from SEGA about the attack too and I don’t like the fact that now my name and email address and date of birth is going to some hackers…
This is getting out of hand. Who’s next? Microsoft?
Well this sucks–hopefully they can return all to normal in time for sonic’s Bday this thursday. I am a member at Sega, but unfortunately it’s been so long since I’ve lasted signed in I can’t remember what password I used–not good if it’s in the hands of hackers. Whoopee.
stupid hackers. they just want to be famous
its a good thing that I bs’ed everything when I signed up for sega pass
I think my name on there was Chowder Flapjack
Maybe the hackers dislike video games? Because they tried to attack Microsoft also. Or maybe they’re just Nintendo fans….
Lucky for me I wasn’t effected…err…affected?
@KnucklesChaotix
Nintendo was hacked already (technically they only found a ste of server configs, but whaterver), it only they patched it. Their Euro users were part of a phishing scam (also not a hack) too though. So year MS would be next, unless they went after like Capcom or Bamco.
Okay, so it was Sony, then Nintendo, and I discover Sega’s been hacked too…
Just what the heck is going on?
