Some PSN Users May Never Have the Chance to Try It
Sometimes with surprises come more surprises.
We’ve learned more about the Sonic Generations demo announced earlier this morning via an article from Andriasang, and among other things, we know only Green Hill’s Classic Sonic mode will be playable in the demo. Despite a file size clocking in at over 650 MB for both consoles, it appears no Modern Sonic equivalent will be available.
What’s more, once downloaded, players can’t demo away until the game’s release. The Generations demo will only be available until July 12th, at which point it will no longer be available…including for players who already downloaded. The file will essentially lock itself. That’s especially important since XBOX Live Gold members are the only ones on the service to get the demo tomorrow; the rest will have to wait until next Thursday, June 30th.
And then there’s this: In Japan, the Playstation Network hasn’t returned online yet, meaning fans using that service have no access to the demo. Andriasang reports that if the PSN does not return by July 12th there, Japanese players will not be able to download or play the demo.
That’s what we know right now. Thanks to AdamTre for tipping us. If you have news to share, be sure to share it with us by clicking News Tips at the top of every page.

Well I suppose realisticly the demo might get old after awhile. Perhaps Sega is trying to limit the amount of Unexpected spoilers this time around.
I sure hope this source is wrong, at least partly anyway. I really want to play the WHOLE demo.
That’s a gigantic dick move on Sega no matter how you try to look at it…
We’re getting a demo this early, I dont think it’s fair to suddenly complain about something they dont have to give to people at all, just enjoy it
no modern sonic???…(sniff, sniff)
Wow the PSN in japan is still offline…whewwww shit…this is so not good argh….well Sonic The Hedgehog…your 20th birthday is just full of suprises. Happy Birthday none the less…LONG LIVE SONIC THE HEDGEHOG…the one who changes so many lives.
Because they’re testing the feedback of him.
lol Technically if you miss the demo it’s no big deal. The only demos I ever played were Sonic Adventure AFTER I got the game (it came on a disc with a buncha demos on it with another game even tho SA1 was the first DreamCast game I got… it was the first DreamCast game released. pfft lol)
The only other demos I ever played were SA2′s on it’s own disc that came with Phantasy Star Online, a demo I THINK of Sonic 4 I don’t even remember… aaaaaaaaand I guess Sonic Generations come tomorrow maybe. lol If you don’t play the demo big deal. It’s not the ACTUAL game, which you can still play. =D
I wouldn’t complain about the contents of a DEMO! We don’t need to demo Modern Sonic. We know what he’s like on these physics and engline. It’s Classic Sonic we need to test. lol Besides, as a demo, it makes sense to tease us. =D lol
Well, with Classic Sonic’s Green Hill level the only one playable, it would get old after a short while.
Also, to the poster above saying we’re getting a demo “this early”, the full game is out in 5 months on November 22nd, so that’s probably another reason why the demo isn’t even staying on that long.
This is great and all, but all these restrictions JUST for a demo? I’ve never heard of a demo with a limit on when and how long you can use it!
That’s absolutely retarded, wtf. Maybe they don’t want us scrutinizing it too much before release? God damn. Paranoid much?
“Tomorrow is Sonic the Hedgehog’s 20th anniversary, and SEGA is celebrating by releasing a demo for Sonic Generations. You’ll get to have a crack at a “classic” platforming Sonic level and a “modern” level, all in stunning 3D for those that have enabled televisions.”
Source is Destructiod have no idea if it’s reliable or not.
great the classic sonic demo coming out if you want to play modern sonic and know how its going to feel just play sonic unleashed on the ps3 its nice that they released a demo at least for 20 days
@Ninjaassasin
Exactly. And imo, the Colors engine is a lot tighter and more refined. Unleashed 360 (and even the Generations demo I played @ Sonic Boom) feels quite a bit sloppier in comparison. It’s not terrible, but it does kind of seem like an unfortunate step backwards.
Interesting that an official source like Destructoid says it’s both modern AND classic but this supposed source from TSSZ says only Classic.
Y’know for once I hope Destructoid is right.
And to be clear: I’m not totally convinced it’s Classic only either. Still, right now, Destructoid’s sort of out there being the only ones saying it will be that way, with other sources picking them up. We and CVG, and even Sonic Stadium, which Destructoid is citing themselves, is saying Classic-only. Classic-only doesn’t make sense for a 650MB+ demo.
We’ll know soon enough.

@ChaoticFox
er…I know this is a strange question, but do you happen to be in any one of these pictures: http://www.tssznews.com/2011/06/08/first-pictures-from-outside-sonic-boom/
@Haru
Yes, but look at GamePro. They are also an official source, except they’re saying it’s only the “Classic Style”. Plus, it’s DESTRUCTOID of all places. I normally don’t hold grudges, but the whole fiasco with Sonic Colors, visiting that website brings an unpleasant feeling of disgust in my stomach.
Pirates get a hold of the demo.
They unlock it.
They play it until game comes out.
Silly non-pirates.
Whatever the case, I want an audio file of SG’s Classic Green Hill Zone ASAP.
@Krazee
Unfortunately, no. There IS a picture of me here though:

actually now that i think about it, i think i know what they’re on about. Given that the demo timetable is 20 days, thats enough time for someone (even on a week vacation [like me -_-']) to download the demo once they return. I think the ultimate goal of this is to let others get a feel of what they’re on about, because not everyone has the time (nor money) to go to Sonic Boom, E3, and S.O.S. They’re at least giving the chance to let everyone have their say in the game.
However, the limited timetable also has a purpose. Once they recieve certain criticizms and suggestions from those who have them about Generations, technically speaking, THAT demo no longer applies to the final product. However, if they had an unlimited demo out, and people downloaded it AFTER they recieved the necessary criticizm to fix it, and there are definite problems with the demo, it might dishearten customers. Given that it doesn’t take much for fanboys to go off on tangents (and that they never shut up) SEGA seems to have saved themselves an earful from fans, even though the final product will have fixed the supposed issues.
It being classic sonic is a given, since thats the section of the game that they really want to have criticized for improvement.
This is just how i see it, dont quote me
@ChaoticFox
I’m going to take a wild guess and say this is you:

I agree with NineTails2000, what a really dick move. No modern Sonic? What’s the point of feedback if you’re only going to release one half of the gameplay and not the other? It makes classic Sonic’s gameplay look more important than modern Sonic’s gameplay. A TIMED demo tha locks up after 20 days? WTF? At least with other demos of games it only has one level to play, but you can play it all you want. Heck, if the demo’s going to be timed, at least make it last longer, like a a whole month.
And if they are going through all this trouble to put out a TIMED demo, let alone a DAMN demo months before the game’s release…….why the hell didn’t they do this for Sonic 4: Episode 1, the game’s claim to fame (unrivalled classic feel, the sequel you’ve been waiting 16 yrs. for, Sonic 4 as you truly imagined it) would had been a a lot more legit then it is now. >_>
I hope that this source is false.
krazee: Good point, I hated that Sonic Colors bullshit, and it was well before that point I had even bothered with that site. (I left once I saw Jim Sterling literally freak the fuck out just because people hated the new DMC. “OMG I CAN’T HANDLE OPINIONS EVERYONE SHUT UP CUZ YOU’RE WRONG” )
I only checked to see what was up about what they said, so it’s good to know another place is saying the same.
How can a demo lock itself? Couldn’t you technically not take the update, disconnect the xbox from live and play it as long as you want?
No modern sonic playable well damn why do i get a funny feeling Aaron Webber has something to do with Modern sonic not being playable in the demo?
the SOA president said all their going to be talking about is Green Hill Zone and City Escape but now i find it strange how their back at just talking about Green Hill Zone instead so i it seems Aaron Webber changed the SOA president’s mind since he hated any level that from the DC era and yes i know this is Aaron Webber’s fault.,i know him he does hate Modern Sonic i know it’s hard for anyone to believe this but it’s a fact not only is webber trying to be the father of sonic he’s also trying to be the father of SEGA and to me that’s not a good thing.
Either the demo is checking the system date or a time server on the Internet, either way, I was really looking forward to playing that demo when it came out and just before general release. Maybe they will have a modern sonic demo near release?
It’s not up yet!
@Tristan Oliver
Actually it makes since, if you look to some demos, Shank for examble, a tottaly 2D game but its 1 GB !
@Krazee
Nope!
I sorta kinda understand keeping the modern part out of this PATICULAR demo; I don’t doubt they’ll release that part of the game at a later date. The same thing happened with the Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time demo: they released 2 different parts of the game in 2 seperate demos. What I DON’T get is the fucking time limit. Why? I’ve never heard of that before, and I really, really don’t see the point.
What the hell?! A TIMED DEMO?! Not only is it Classic Sonic only, but even timed?! Sega, you no good bastards! This seriously pissed me off. I hate ANY types of downloads with expiration dates. Very discouraging, not to mention selfish on their side…Sega strikes again.
wow…microsoft is retarded! i tried downloading the sonic generations demo on xbla, but apparently im not allowed to, because “This account does not allow content of this rating” even though its rated RP, and its Sonic F***ing GENERATIONS! >:(
i seriously hope sony will release the demo on psn, regardless of whether or not japan’s service is up or not.
The demo can only be downloaded to an account 18+ but you can play it on any account once downloaded. I suggest asking a friend for permission to download the demo. Luckily I have a second account on xbox above the age of 18.
Microsoft should fix this soon. They did the same with Facebook when it was released on Xbox saying you could only use it if you were 18 which goes against Facebook’s own rules. I believe you can make an account on Facebook as young as 13.
Actually this isn’t the first time a demo is released that locks itselft after a while. EA did the same with the Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit demo. However, I was still able to play it after it expired by adjusting my PS3′s clock, let’s just hope Sega does the same mistake.
Just tried the demo, classic Sonic feels great for the most part, better than Sonic 4 at least.
Just a few small nitpicks that probably don’t matter, I don’t remember if Sonic falls down this fast if you hold a jump or not, he might have more gravity than before… I remember him being a little more “floaty” to reach higher grounds at times. And skidding might not last as long if you try it on older Sonic, but that stuff shouldn’t matter at all.
Minor graphic concerns – Sonic looks extremely green on the ground, I never realized how much grass either “glows” or radiates other objects this much…
I PLAYED THE DEMO.
HOLY CRAP.
Can’t wait untill the 30th
(It’s kinda sad only people paying were able to play it on sonic’s birthday)
