Some PSN Users May Never Have the Chance to Try It
Sometimes with surprises come more surprises.
We’ve learned more about the Sonic Generations demo announced earlier this morning via an article from Andriasang, and among other things, we know only Green Hill’s Classic Sonic mode will be playable in the demo. Despite a file size clocking in at over 650 MB for both consoles, it appears no Modern Sonic equivalent will be available.
What’s more, once downloaded, players can’t demo away until the game’s release. The Generations demo will only be available until July 12th, at which point it will no longer be available…including for players who already downloaded. The file will essentially lock itself. That’s especially important since XBOX Live Gold members are the only ones on the service to get the demo tomorrow; the rest will have to wait until next Thursday, June 30th.
And then there’s this: In Japan, the Playstation Network hasn’t returned online yet, meaning fans using that service have no access to the demo. Andriasang reports that if the PSN does not return by July 12th there, Japanese players will not be able to download or play the demo.
That’s what we know right now. Thanks to AdamTre for tipping us. If you have news to share, be sure to share it with us by clicking News Tips at the top of every page.

I am disappointed…… and extremely sad….. and extremely upset too.
It’s basically what they did with the Sonic Unleashed (PSN) demo. They left in a part of the game that has positive reception and left the Werehog out so gamers can play the best of the game.
Now, in painful irony, they’re leaving out the Modern Gameplay (the same thing they kept two years ago) and putting Classic Sonic in. Something tells me that the 13,000+ votes for Classic Sonic on Facebook accomplished something.
Well, but hey, we still get a demo. AMERICA, FUCK YEAH!
No Modern Sonic? Bah…
Correction! – PSN Has turned back online! it been online for a long time now!
At least we’re getting something.
No Modern!? God dammit!
And what’s with all these restrictions, SEGA? I just wanna play this demo over and over until it’s out.
@HolyShrimp Not in Japan, it’s still down over there. But Americans are very angry and impatient so they made us their #1 priority.
No… modern Sonic? I want the best of BOTH worlds!!!
that’s no good sega , no good , why expire demo on july 12 :O
In Portugal (where I live) they some times update the PSNStore very VERY late, like, a week or 2 after the UK PSNStore updates their catalog, not to mention that we only got the Sonic Unleashed demo AFTER the game came out… I hope that doesn’t happen this time around.
I have the utmost confidence that Modern will still be fast and frenetic like Sonic Colors.
I have, however, been curious to see how well Classic Sonic is to the Genesis titles.
So, this news doesn’t really effect me. The only thing that DOES is what time it actually comes out.
ummm….anyone consider the possibility that once the classic sonic demo expires, the modern sonic demo will replace it?
No modern? As bad as that is atleast we get a demo.
That is disappointing… A 20 days only demo that i ll have to wait one more week to play… Failed birthday gift to the fans
A self destructing birthday present
Crap. :/
Well, I am most curious about how classic Sonic will control, since we basically know how modern Sonic will feel. Still, why do we get half a demo? Just curious.
Once again, Sega teases the shit out of us…
Oh well. At least I’ll be able to finally play it at least once.
AWWWWW COME ON!!! Give us both Classic and Modern, we’ve seen them a bajillion times already so it really isn’t spoiling the game experience too much for us.
…Booo.
For shame… it’s Sonic’s 20th Birthday, don’t hold out on us…
Im thinking since that Breadk down at E3 with IGN, maybe thats why they are holding it off.
@Funkyjeremi
SEGA failed because you don’t have enough money to pay for a Gold account?
I’m kinda miffed it’s only the Classic Sonic stage.
“Same demo from Sonic Boom/E3″ my ass.
Hmm. . I’m just going to wait it out until the holidays.
pip-pip. Cheeri-o.
That’s…odd. Is it normal to give self-destructing demos or are they trying to prevent people from reverse-engineering it or something?
Whoa, whoa, whao!!! We only get to play it ’til the twelfth?!? I was going to play that thing day in and day out until the full game was released! Well, I guess it gives us something to try out. :/
Inb4 someone hacks their console’s clocks to make the demo everlasting.
i like modern and classic when start playing classic it feels like 1991 when playing our old sonic back in the day he grow up fast and still no body will never forget out bue blur guy.
That’s…horrible!! WHAT THE HELL, SEGA!! I want to play as Modern Sonic!
*sigh*…Well, better than nothing.
@Dex3
….Good point.
We don’t even get Modern Sonic in the demo? Fuck that.
I couldn’t have gotten it even if I wanted it…. My 360′s online does not work.
@krazeeKidd102
I think only Classic Sonic is available because we’ve all already played Colors and Unleashed on this engine and what not but haven’t played the “new Classic Sonic” gameplay yet.
As for the WereHog thing, idk anything about that.
What’s funny is if you make a new email just for the occassion, you can use it to make a new XBL account which can be GOLD for a temporary amount of time as a trial before expiring and turning to Silver, where you then need to pay for your GOLD membership. What if people just do that to get the demo when it comes out? lol
Well to be I’m not extremely interested in playing modern sonic for the Demo. I’d still like it of course, to get a feel for how it plays, but I’m far more interested in getting my hands on the classic version. That aside, I can’t imagine why Sega would pull this: from what I’ve always understood, they’re pretty obstinate that the current modern gameplay is it for 3D, and that seems to be what they’ll be moving forward with in future games, along with the use of modern sonic design. That and a lot of fans do really enjoy the modern gameplay. Either that source is wrong, or this is just Sega contradicting themselves and being confusing. Again.
So…my question is when it locks does it take the time to let the player know so they can delete it right then and there, or do I have to hunt it down and erase it myself?
Giving it a run either way.
Sega be trolling
I wonder if they’ll release Modern Sonic’s level later on, after Classic’s level expires. Splitting them up would give them more things to release over time, and would stretch out the hype.
They left out the part I wanted to play most, oh well at least it’s something.
@superskeetospro You mean modern will play like unleashed, since its more like unleashed than colors..
why the limits? I dont get it
@Dex3
good point! Now I’m happy again!
I think this is a pretty good idea to be fair… it means that you won’t be able to make yourself sick of the game before it’s even out… plus the excitement would kind of not be so intense…
Why no modern, 23th should be a celebration of 20 year which include both modern and classic. Its still better than nothing.
Way to go sega take it one step further and remove modern sonic from the game totally and ill be happy.
@Daniel *Facepalm*
Way to kill the fun. Argh. So much for having people playing the demo that Boomers played.
HA!!!! WHAT DID I SAY!!! DOWN SIDE!!!
@Daniel Like that will ever happen.
THAT SUCKS! Don’t have the energy to put up a long comment. XP
Do they honestly think that no one is going to figure out how to ‘unlock’ the demo after its expiration? In this day and age (especially in the Sonic community) hacking is second nature.
