US Beats UK at Its Own Game
The organizers of the Summer of Sonic convention in London know what they’re doing, and many will agree both it and Sonic Boom, a new endeavor on the other side of the Atlantic, fared very well with fans. But we asked the question anyway in our latest @Issue poll, and out of 652 votes, a majority opinion awarded Sonic Boom as the best.
The margin was fairly decisive–59 percent to SOS’s 41 percent. But as many of our readers pointed out at the poll’s onset, there is a little bit of bias built in. For one, Sonic Boom accommodated close to 2,000 attendees, while SOS counted 1250 attendees. Sega helps out both shows, but Boom was a direct Sega product; SOS remains run independently, making it a proper convention by fans, for fans. And while SOS had Jun Senoue playing a set, Boom-goers were treated to that and the other half of Crush 40, Johnny Gioeli, as well as Alex from Cash Cash. The decider, however, could have been air conditioning. Boom had it, while SOS again had difficulty keeping attendees cool–a problem meant to be rectified this year after complaints about it last year.
A new poll is available to vote on now.

@Stephan: “Too unrealistic”? …she does know that the game stars a three-foot blue anthropomorphic hedgehog with a thing for chilidogs, a three-foot two-tailed yellow fox with a thing for technology, and a white alien with a curled hair strand, right?
@Amuro
Yeah, I told her that. And be careful what you say about her, she is my girl. XD
@Stephan: Oh no, I’m not trying to make fun of her, I’m just making sure she’s right in the head.
@Amuro
She’s right in the head…, a little. XD
@ChaotixFox Well, I had to balance out all three generations to have ten each, so they were eqaul.
@Sonick
THERE IS NO GOD DAMN NEED TO BALANCE OUT EVERY ERA. Seriously, why the hell did anyone ever assume there had to be some sort of magical balance between all three “eras” when one of them wasn’t even considered good enough to have its own gameplay style, and one of them is so goddamn recent that it does not in any way require much (if ANY) representation?
Also @ Stephan’s gf: FUCK REALISM – KEEP THAT SHIT AS FAR AWAY FROM SONIC AS IS HUMANLY POSSIBLE
@ChaotixFox
O.O …Dude… That’s my girlfriend…
I don’t care if she’s the god damn Queen of England, her stance on this particular subject is bat-shit retarded
I’d say the same thing to my own girlfriend if I had to, lol
You should note that I essentially said “fuck your opinion” and not “fuck you”.
If that’s crossing some sort of panzy-ass line then I’d suggest you not bring her opinions into any more conversations XD
@ChaoticFox
But still, that kinda hurt. XD
And were you saying that Sonic’s Adventure gameplay wasn’t considered good enough?
And I definitely won’t bring her opinions into this, unless it makes sense. XD
@ChaoticFox Hey, that’s my favorite gameplay! The classic games always felt overrated in my opinion……..
Classic Sonic is just overrated. I like Classic, but hes overrated.
Adventure 2 feels a LOT more overrated.
@Stephen But I actully had FUN playing it.
@sonick123456
I did too, but it doesn’t do it for me as much as it did back then.
@Stephan
I’m not saying *I* feel the Adventure gameplay wasn’t good enough, I’m saying that obviously Sonic Team does, or they would have allowed for at least SOME modern Sonic gameplay that DIDN’T rely on a boost meter.
And you’re ABSOLUTELY right about SA2 being overrated. Most overrated game in all of Sonic’s history, if you ask me.
@Amuro/Sonick
The thing about classic Sonic is that, green eyes or not, the classic games have better and more interesting/creative/memorable level and art design and a virtually flawless gameplay engine. Whether you love or hate the simplicity of the older games, you can’t honestly deny that it’s a brilliantly polished experience, being that it doesn’t feature even 1% of the glitches, bugs, camera issues, retarded plotlines/dialogue, or abuse of pointless scripted sections that many of the modern games do.
I get the appeal of modern Sonic, I do, and I enjoy my fair share of the “modern” games, but the classics are classic for a reason – they earned it. And whether they appeal to your personal gaming preferences or not, they still stand out as higher quality games than many (if not all of) the modern ones.
A lot of people are under the impression that quality is a matter of opinion, and I can’t really do much to sway that narcissistic and misguided delusion. But the sad truth is that no matter how much a person enjoys the modern games, they are generally lacking in the refined quality and polish that the “classic era” provided.
It’s like comparing Mozart to Lady Gaga. No matter who you prefer, it’s obvious who has the more impressive talents.
@ChaoticFox
………. *claps*
Wait… Isn’t the Unleashed gameplay just Adventure gameplay with faster sections and a boost that’s actually a glorified Spin Dash?
@Stephan
Not to me. Unleashed is a game so focused on speed that it virtually ignores platforming entirely. It’s literally DESIGNED to be played with the boost button held down at ALL times, so much so, in fact, that Sonic actually controls quite poorly if you ever find yourself trying to move in any direction besides forward at top speed. Even the level design reflects this mentality (seriously, go watch the modern gameplay videos for Generations’ GHZ).
Colors ammended this somewhat, both in terms of gameplay AND level design, but I’d bet my life that Generations will play much more like the outdated Unleashed than the upgraded style featured in Colors.
@ChaoticFox I got BORED w/ the classics.
@Sonick
And some people are bored with classical music. Point is, those people have no class and lack appreciation for genuine talent. You’re still welcome to be entertained by cheap parlor tricks, but if you can’t appreciate the real deal then you’re just a sad sad soul
@ChaoticFox What is wrong with you? Modern games are fast and exciting, while the classic games don’t amuse me. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate the classics. I just find them extremely outdated. Bringing back classic sonic was a good move for sega, but they better not replace modern.
