Get Your 3D Fangaming On
We’ve shown you a fair bit of the preview releases, and now Xaklse’s 3D Sonic fan game engine is ready for primetime. He released version 1 on Wednesday, and followed up with Version 1.00.005 over the weekend. As it’s based off the Unreal Development Kit, the latest build requires the UDK June 2011 build to function.
The SonicGDK can emulate, among other things, much of the Sonic physics, shields, checkpoints, 2.5D gameplay, spikes, and more in a fully 3D environment. Already, SFG developers are aflurry with ways to best utilize the kit. The Sonic Colors model has been ported in, and there’s word of a Blue Spheres special stage idea floating around.
It will be a while, though, before we see something substantive, like a fully playable game, out of the SonicGDK outside of Ashura: Dark Reign. When that starts happening, we’ll get a good idea if 3D fan gaming can ever be as varied and active as the 2D fan gaming scene has the past decade.

*raises hand*
Real, honest-to-god slope physics was recently added to SRB2, under the “Community Build” mod. I’m positive people will start making levels using it soon.
The new era of Sonic fangaming has arrived. =D
I think it will still take years to beat sonic GL

@Mike: Don’t even joke like that.
@Mike and darkgomugomu: 7zip is definately better.
I cannot wait to see what the fans do with this. I think Sonic has one of the most dedicated groups of fan developers who want to contribute to this amazing franchise.
Just downloaded it. Let’s see what magic I can make with this baby.
