Get Your Sonic The Comic Game On
Following the first installment of the ‘How Fleetway Played The Games’ feature in April that discussed Fleetway’s approach to Sonic the Hedgehog comics during the 1990s and early 2000, Sonic Retro has published their second installment this month. The other half of this feature during the beginning of the year discussed how Archie tackled the US audience with their adaptions of Sonic in comic form, especially the differences in plot and art style, for which there are big differences when compared to Fleetway’s comics. As the article goes on to explain, one of these differences was the setting and plot of the comics: Sonic the Comic was published in 1993, but six months after Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and was therefore set beyond that game as a result. The comics also portrayed the origins of Sonic himself in a slightly left-field manner, to say the least, when compared with Archie’s take on Sonic (I won’t spoil this for you – it’s pretty interesting). As the article also goes on to explain, both companies had their different approaches to tackling story arcs during their initial publication stage and whether they wanted to develop a plot over time or have individual issues.
I won’t talk any longer, though. You can find the second part of this feature over at Sonic Retro. It’s an interesting read, especially if you never read any issues of Sonic the Comic or just wanted to see how different sections of the western market were approached.
Edit: currently Sonic Retro is down, so that’s why links may not be working. I’ll remove this edit when it comes back online.

i just wanna know what chapter that the adventure adaptation starts so i can skip the rest. I can only take so many puns……eggggghhhh.
I saw the pics on their site…. Sonic looked like a christmas tree.
@darkgomugomu
for which book, because both had terrible starts in the beginning. But i’ll assume Archie since Archie is infamous for puns. Archie’s Adventure era starts at #79 (or 71 if u mean design change) while StC’s last arc was their adventure era and continues into StcO.
I remember reading the Fleetway comics as a kid and thinking Sonic was much more mean spirited in them than in any other media (often calling Tails names and dismissing almost everything he said lol). Amy was much more hardened and always retained her Sonic CD look. There were some fairly mediocre exclusive characters like Johnny Lightfoot, some pig, and Techno (who actually wasn’t too badly designed). Anyway I still have most of them up in my attick somewhere.
That’s easy. Fleetway was awesome. Archie was not awesome. The End.
lol sure, it was awesome with it’s weird depictions and alterations of the characters. Archie gets flack for liberties taken with SEGASonic chars but Fleetway outright shits on that. Dont get me wrong its a good read but that doesn’t mean its perfect and niether is Archie for that matter.
