‘Father of Sonic’ submitted ideas for Sonic Adventure redesign
Hot on the heels of revealing more details about Sonic Generations, Sonic Paradise claims to have obtained details of the redesign process for Sonic for the launch of the ‘Dreamcast era’. Particularly, the report claims that a member from Sonic Retro has been in contact with Oshima which resulted in a drawing being sent. As the article goes on to state, the picture certainly shows differences to the final design in Sonic Adventure (consider the eyes, notably) with the drawing seeming to be a combination of of the ‘classic’ Sonic style and what would eventually be known as ‘Modern Sonic’. Aside from the eyes, the general frame of Sonic in this drawing seems to be shorter than what we eventually got in Sonic Adventure.
Apart from that there is not much more to the article. Hit up the source link to check out pictures of the redesign, as well as what appear to be original drawings of Classic Sonic.

…Did he have any bones…?
Sonic should do wired twist like that for every box art cover. Every last one!
What the ugly thing i just saw it?
My eyes is burning!
I want to know who’s decision it was to change Sonic’s design. I swear, if Oshima was the one who thought he needed the ugly redesign instead of big head honchos at Sega of Japan…..
Really. That is all kinds of ugly. It disappoints me. He had such a great character design to begin with. Why fuck it up? Oh wait…. That’s rad, edgy, and cool….. Right.
So… I’m guessing that this is a bad time to mention my general preference for “Modern” Sonic’s design…
It was me who contacted him and got the picture. Nothing to do with Sonic Paradise, come on guys :/
See, Nicochi? The Modern Sonic we got isn’t ugly. The modern Sonic you see in this article is.
I love Classic and Modern Sonic, well, pre-HD and post-16 bit Dreamcast, Gamecube, PS2, and Xbox Sonic looked very wierd, but this concept looks worse than what I would draw when I was 7!!!!!
Wow, Sonic was as silly looking as the first rendition of Mario at one point in his life? Not that the American design wasn’t already, but cripes.
And I don’t see anything wrong with mentioning it, Komodin! I prefer it as well, by a long shot.
I like both Modern and Classic Sonic, I just like Modern Sonic a bit more. But, if you like Modern Sonic better than his chubby younger self, be prepared to be crucified for your belief on sites like Retro or deviantART. Did I mention how much I hate Nicochi?
Yes you did, Amuro. In fact, you’ve mentioned it the last few articles. Obsessed?
Well, I’m not exactly a fan of Nicochi myself…
Yeah. What we got was far better than what Oshima had in mind.
Something tells me that this is Oshima’s way to mock the current design. I dunno.
i think sonic twists like that bc that was Oshima’s style. No really!, u can surely tell by the shading. It feels like they mixed that up with another artist’s shading of another redesigned sonic and got the adventure style shading that’s become iconic for the sonic universe. So it might not be that Sonic’s new model was gonna be as “not appealing” as that pic. It’s Oshima’s character, and he was able to draw him in what ever style he chose.
Personally i like that style. It’s so unique, and it is also fun to see how modern sonic grew from that. But all this whining saying: “that’s why modern sonic look so fugly” is ignorant, because i highly doubt sonic was gonna stay twisted like that in the games.
but what i wanna know, if Oshima’s plan was to keep Sonics’ eyes black why did everyone change it and then make up excuses for it?? Its not like i hate his green eyes, i love them, the more color the better to me. Without the green eyes Sonic’s face would seem so played out with the modern stle of sonic (buy looking at the pic). it would feel so awkward and strange to me. Plus the fact that most of your old sckool video game characters actually ‘gained’ colored eyes. But Mario gained his pretty early =]
I cried when I saw that.
@Greg: Well, it bears repeating.
i like it. he had the incredible ability to twist his entire leg around the other XD
Man, this actually does not look so bad. Still, I like the modern Sonic WE have now so much better.
Still, in regards to the modern Sonic we have today, I am still puzzled on why some people think he looks ugly. I mean, I swear people are just doing that for the sake of doing it. Modern Sonic may be a bit different from classic Sonic, but he is no where near as ugly as some people say he is.
Aside from the noodle arms I really kinda like it.
@Sonication: You’ll hear rguments such as “buttcrack eyebrows”, “lifeless green eyes”, “lanky limbs”, “quills that flop around like dicks”, etc. I personally think it’s all bullshit.
^ARGUMENTS. Fucking typo.
@Amuro: Agreed. Those complaints on Sonic’s modern design are all BS as you said.
I legitimately cannot even believe this is real. Everything about the artwork screams TROLL, from the intentionally derp-tarded legs to the fact that the art STYLE (regardless of character design) is pretty much a straight up mimickry of the derp-tarded official art from the Adventure games.
@Amuro
No it doesn’t. Get a life.
@ChaoticFox: Dude, I have a life. I don’t like the guy, nothing you say will make me change that. And the above comment was a joke, although in retrospect I should’ve made that clearer.
I’m glad this design was scrapped,Sonic looks too much like that silly blue hedgehog that fought against a guy who deserved a promotion.
@Amuro
I don’t care if you don’t like the guy, hate the guy, or keep a little shrine of him in your goddamn closet – but I (and likely everyone else) seriously do not care to hear how much you hate some random-ass guy from another website on EVERY OTHER ARTICLE.
So what, were they gonna give Sonic the ability to be like stretch armstrong or something because it is impossible for his legs to be wrapped around each other like they are 0_0.
@ChaoticFox: Okay. Sheesh…
I don’t like it because of how bendy he looks, I would like the design drawn in a different pose, though.
@Chaotic Fox
Oh you’re hatin’ on the Adventure art!? Ooh, I hate you now….OK not really….but kinda…jerk. Just kidding…but only a little.
Off topic, but I thought I let you guys know that Sonic Retro’s back online.
Hey Hey Hey, who want’s to blessed by Noodle ARMS )8D

@Skai
Yes.
While I do prefer the classic Sonic look, I’ve never really had a problem with Sonic’s modern
design. The green eyes don’t bother me, and I don’t mind the longer spikes/limbs when they are actually drawn or modeled by decent artists… but I’ve always hated the style of most of the Adventure artwork, with it’s weird ass poses, shading, and ultra-heavy linework (among other things).
I wasn’t a big fan of the SA2 Sonic with his ugly-ass Soaps, and the in-game ’06 model was a fucking joke (as is the Sonic 4 logo – seriously, what’s up with his mouth? I can’t even tell what kind of expression that’s supposed to be), but I’m in love with the Unleashed Colors models – it’s like they finally got it right.
Don’t feed that thing after mid-night.
Woah, look at that leg. O_o
I admit, that red scar thing was kinda cool… I might get use to it.
When I first saw this picture, I thought it was some fanart of somebody making fun of modern Sonic. I can’t believe this art is real from one of the creators. I love both classic Sonic and the modern Sonic design from Unleashed/Colors/Generations and I’m glad that Classic Sonic didn’t end up looking like that.
Arguing over opinions!
I don’t know if I’d really call that “Modern” Sonic, since it wasn’t really referring to the Sonic in the modern games, but the Sonic in the Adventure games. I mean, in that image, his face and head is drawn almost exactly the same except for the eye-color deal. He doesn’t really seem to be shorter than Adventure Sonic either, just that his his waiste is rounded off like classic Sonic. Other than the eyes and the waiste this is pretty much exactly what Adventure Sonic looked like. lol
ALTHOUGH, this looks a LOT more “spighetti” looking than Adventure Sonic. The dude’s leg just spiralled around his other leg! WTF!?
But this can’t be Modern Sonic tho cuz Modern Sonic’s artwork is only in 3D (except if it’s in the Sonic Channel style, which is based on the Adventure series Style but less dynamic and more simplistic) Modern Sonic’s hair isn’t as spread as Adventure Sonics, and his torso is smaller and more rectangular than Adventure Sonic’s, and his shoulders stick way out, and his legs are as long compared to Adventure Sonic’s as Adventure Sonic’s is to Classic Sonic’s. Modern Sonic also has more of a squared off facial stricture while Classic and Adventure are more rounded. Most of all, Modern Sonic has always looked like a cartoon/toy whether he was shiney or rubbery. lol
Oh well. They’re both in 3D so it’s the same thing to everyone I guess nomatter how much he changes after SA1. lol (Even tho Sonic’s image on the cover/title screen of Sonic R looks like Adventure Sonic without green eyes. It also had the same model from Sonic Jam, which was going to originally be in Sonic Adventure. Lastly, in Sonic Jam, he runs the same way he does in the Adventure series: Feet making a “Spinning” illusion while his arms are stretched back. lol)
@ChaoticFox
Aww, I like the Adventure series artwork! lol It’s craziness is creative to me. I’d get tired of seeing him in the same poses all the time or in the derpy poses he’s gotten in the modern era. (By “derpy”, I mean limp, as in his arm position feels lazy and his overall pose feels effortless. It just looks “boring” to me. XD And something that goes along with that was Modern Sonic’s smile being like a =S face all the time. lol Tho in Colors they finally got that right, tho to be fair his smile is now similar to his Adventure series smile only less exaggerated. lol)
I liked his SA2 design best tho. I mean, I don’t really have an opinion on the shoes, because they’re still red with a white stripe, it’s a one-time thing, it was so he could grind etc etc. But also I don’t think they were ugly. They looked like real shoes that aren’t ugly and a lot of ppl like. I wouldn’t call it ugly just cuz it’s different. His shoes in Riders aren’t ugly to me either but they’re not as good as the Soap Shoes to me. Tho I don’t like his Shoes in Unleashed/Colors/Generations. They’re shaped like seeds. lol
As for the Adventure series artwork, what was wrong with the lineart and shading? Other games used that as well and a lot of fans try to mimmick it for other artwork just to make it look more professional. o:
Sonic started to grow up… *snif*
@Everyone who is upset with the design:
Maybe you’d like the design better like this:
http://brandonth.deviantart.com/art/DreamCast-Sonic-223700707
It, uh…it doesn’t look that different.
Oh. My. God. HE’S GOT BROWN EYES! FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-
Seriously, that design is pretty ugly.
Naoto Oshima liked to draw fun things. Perhaps it was just for fun? Or maybe he was making fun of how elastic Sonic looked in the art for the japanese Sonic 3D blast manual drawn by Yuji Uekawa? (but exaggerating it a lot ). . .
Manual art: http://info.sonicretro.org/images/d/d2/Sonic_3DFlickies.jpg
……it looks like the result of both Sonic designs if he was made to be mangled like Silly Putty.
@Dan Why? Will it turn into a ugly green Werehog and wreck havoc?
I once again convinced myself that modern design which appeared in games is great. I very like it.
