Including What’s Almost Certainly Stardust Speedway
This week, the latest issue of Famitsu magazine in Japan revealed a newly confirmed zone for Sonic Generations, again in line with what we told you earlier last month: Chemical Plant Zone.
Our Japan correspondent Danny Russell picked up a copy and afforded a scan for all of us. We elected to crop out unnecessary material so you could focus on just the screenshots, and keep in mind that they’re not clean, like what you would expect from Sega’s own releases. Still the result is a gallery of thirteen new screenshots, showing off Chemical Plant, as well as Metal Sonic in action on what appears to be an updated Stardust Speedway racetrack. All indications are you will race Metal Sonic in the boss battle. There are also additional shots from the 3DS version’s Special Stage.
That’s all below.

It is possible to please everyone. You just have to make a million different games with a hundred different levels in each one.
Games aren’t made by people, right?
What the fuck am I reading? Disappointment? Useless bitching?
Flamerstreak on MY motherfucking TSSZ?
Screw you guys, seriously.
PS: I <3 you guys that freaking out over stupid shit.
Oh my god! Stardust Speedway! My wish came true!
@Greg
Sorry bro, probably not gonna happen ^^
@DJDonut
So what if we fight? What the hell does it matter? What fun would comment sections be if they were nothing but “YAY GENERATIONS” and “OMG THIS GAYM LOOKS GR8!” ?
Insightful criticism, discussion, and even arguments are infinitely more interesting than a bunch of nerds just agreeing with each other and sucking Sega’s dick.
I personally really like the look they went with for Chemical Plant. Really gives it a bit of an “Eggmanland” feel. Of course, if it’s as long as Eggmanland, then we have a problem.
You guys care so much about Sonic Generations. That your argument has currently spanned four pages.
I am so proud of you.
@ChaotixFox
So just bitching for the sake of bitching?
Of course, typical Sonic fan mentality
@Naka
That’s fucking retarded logic. There’s several arguments between several different people, plus a bunch of whiners bitching about the arguments in-between (among plenty of other unrelated comments). No single argument has spanned four pages, you’re exaggerating hardcore.
@Soniman
No. Bitching for the sake of having a conversation worth having. To be perfectly honest, 90% of these arguments/fights wouldn’t even happen if people would just SHUT THE FUCK UP and let some of us have our goddamn criticisms or debate them like a sane person, rather than throwing a temper tantrum because we aren’t copy-pasting smiley faces like everybody else.
Wow, ppl are still commenting on a three day old article?
maaaan, thats how you KNOW the sonic news is empty =/.
You guys won’t restart like yesterday -_-
btw im so excited about this game the way they will put the shield physic on modern and to include the wisp in classis gameplay. BUT, if sega give us some of their most memorable quote (shadow: damn , Silver: It’s no USE or Pickle assistant: a WHOLE PACK OF ROBOT) I will explode from the inside.
@ChaoticFox
Oh, well a thousand fucking pardons that they insulted your superior intellect.
Seriously, get over yourself
WOW just WOW
This is why we always get picked on, because we always have these pointless wars. Hope your happy Sega this is the fanbase your trying to please.
@Soniman
I don’t even know where you got that? But if you’d listen to what I’m saying instead of getting all huffy puffy, I’m just trying to point out that a lot of the fighting could be averted if people stopped going “YOU’RE NOT EVER ALLOWED TO SAY ANYTHING NEGATIVE, OMGGGG – SINNNNNNNNNNN!”
Seriously, it’s ALWAYS the people NOT complaining that start these stupid fights. It takes all of three seconds to go “you know what, I can see why that would bother you, but it personally doesn’t bother me”, but instead people go on these fucking tirades about who’s the true Sonic fan, or making dissertations on the unpleasable state of the fanbase, because somebody had the audacity to say “you know what, I was hoping for something different”.
Who REALLY needs to get over themselves?
@ChaotixFox
Ok, fair enough.
I still think you guys are abit sensitive to let yourselves be swayed by the opinion complainers to bust out into the triade we have now.
You make it worse when you talk down to people and profile then (like Mr. Greg did with the “modern fans”)
In the end, no side is squeaky clean
@ChaoticFox
I’m 100% with you, dude, on this. I don’t understand why people treat you like this. You’re just trying to make a point about what you like/ don’t like in the Sonic franchise. Its totally legitimate.
If Sonic’s become an untochable for some, well shit.
You Sonic worshipers actually have NOTHING to say about recent Sonic games? Everything is perfect? Good for you. For me, Sonic is FAR from perfect. A lot of things went wrong in past Sonic games, all the way from Sonic 3D bast. The MOMENT Sonic went “3D”, things went downhill. In term of gameplay and story.
Who are you trying to fool, Sonic worshipers? Sonic’s a bitch to handle in 3D.
So, is it bad to ask SEGA to fix this and make it better? Must we keep our mouth shut JUST because we love Sonic? I hope not.
I won’t even talk about the story & characters.
What I just mean, is that, I was used to expect perfectness from Sonic, in the Genesis era. If I died, it was MY FAULT, not the camera, not the controls, ME. Modern Sonic is so hard to control today its ridiculous. But why are you so forgiving? Because Sonic is cool? Because he runs fast and it looks awesome?
Gimme a break. I want quality, not just wow factor.
@Phil R
What do you mean by “Modern Sonic is a bitch to handle in 3D”?
Seriously you guys atleast lets return to the main topics
Returning to the main topics, I can’t wait to race Metal Sonic… for the first time. Yeah……………. I’ve never played Sonic CD.
@Stephan
I mean that he’s hard to control. He dosent always respond the way he’s supposed to. Witch usually ends up in cheap death. He’s too fast and the controls are too sensitive. And when you play Modern Sonic (in 3D, not his 2D sequences) you need the reflexes of a god.
Anyway, this is just how I feel about Sonic these day.
Oh and one more thing. I must apologise if I’m not clear, I usually speak in french, so trying to explain my opinion in proper english… is quite hard for me.
@Nerdword
Like you said, let’s get back to the main topic. I can’t wait to heat the modern Sonic’s music for Chemical plant, should be awesome!!!
Now.. If SEGA could show some love and release Ice Cap Zone and Mistic Cave as DLC!! OH! OH!! And Hill Top Valley!
…. release all of the Genesis levels please!!
@Phil R
I didn’t really need the reflexes of a god on Colors. He controlled way better on that game than Unleashed.
@Nerdword. Try it out. Really easy to get since, you know, we’re on the internet. I won’t advocate what exactly I mean, but, yeah. It’s an awesome game. Sonic 3 & Knuckles is my top favorite Sonic game ever. Sonic CD is my second. Don’t miss out on history!
@Stephan
You’Re so right! That’s what i like so much in Sonic Colors, They finally made a 3D Sonic right in this one. He’s fast, but not “too” fast. And I also like the ratio between 2D and 3D sequenses in this game. And the controls are simpler, more enjoyable (only need one button to jump and target things).
And I also like the fact that they made Sonic control a bit more like his classic form, in the 2D sequences. Like, if you keep a pressed when you jump, you can –jump– on the bad guys and bounce to another bad guy, just like in classic Sonic. Once I discovered that, I ditched the homing attack.
–Yeah, I’m a nostalgic old school jerk!
(about my comment on Sonic jumping in 2D, in Sonic Colors, I must clarify a point: When Sonic jumps, he’s dosent get in his ball form right away, and befor he hits the ground, he gets back to his standing form.. witch is bad if you try to hit ennemies without homing them)
So when you keep the jumping button preses, he stays in a ball. I like this subtle variation SEGA did for Sonic Colors!
@Soniman032: “You make it worse when you talk down to people and profile then (like Mr. Greg did with the “modern fans”)”
Uh, sorry? You guys are getting awfully offended to someone who’s rationally and calmly stating his thoughts. Profiling? Maybe. But you know, every one of you guys believe in this “If you don’t have anything nice to say don’t say anything at all” mentality that doesn’t work in real life. ChaoticFox (despite calling names) has a point. The ones who always go on the Offense are the ones who believe in this mentality and just cannot let anyone critique or criticize anything that Sega does lest we be named haters. Thing is, a whole lot of us who are complaining have been with this franchise for years and have seen what it’s become…. and we don’t like it. We’re all for evolution of the franchise, but that’s just it. It’s not a natural evolution and it never was. They jumped from everyone being a platformer with different abilities such as flying, gliding, and climbing to all the main characters having COMPLETELY different playing styles from being in a mech to laboriously hunting for treasure. It’s changed from momentum based platforming to racing game without the opponent racers. This stuff isn’t cool. We want that natural evolution into a 3D platformer, not a simple race as fast as you can to point B game anymore. That shit got old after a week of Unleashed.
I’m sorry. I can’t take anymore mediocrity. I’m not wanting to start a war, I just want things to improve. We’ve given Sega an entire decade to improve. We honestly deserve more for our money.
@Greg
Why do I have the feeling classic fans like you ALWAYS want to ignore the positives of Modern Sonic or just want to completely forget about Colors?
Is it just me or does it seem like there is a flame war between classic and modern sonic fans on every single site, including this one, concerning this game. If you like the game and can’t wait for it to come out that’s great. If you don’t, keep it to yourself. The arguments were pretty funny last month but now they’re just getting old. How you can make one argument last for over two days is just amazing to me. I’m not saying it’s everyone because there are a lot of spectators kicking back and eating popcorn but to the ones who are in this war, get over it! Why can’t we all just sit back and enjoy what we’re getting because it’s not going to change over a stupid little scuffle.
Can we Stop Fighting? You guys have kept on for damn near 24Hours.
@Stephan: I think I already said Sonic Colours was a good platformer. The problem is is that it wasn’t a great Sonic game. You could put any speedy character be it Speedy Gonzales or Speedy de Quikfeet and have his villain be Dr. Bumblebot, but it would still be the same game.
Thing is, Modern Sonic isn’t really delivering anything all that enticing. Colours delivered more platforming sure, but as far as that went it felt like playing a Megaman game going over all of those same rectangular platforms. It’s as average basic platforming as you can get. Not much to catch one’s eyes beyond the incredibly pretty visuals of Starlight Carnival and Planet Wisp and the various other theme park attractions. Felt like a trip to Universal instead of to Disney World. Cheap thrills and no real substance. An average title, but not as offensively polished a turd as playing as Hedgehog Wolf.
*starts whistling japanese Stardust Speedway Good future*
Excuse me coming though ((avoiding the bar fight that took over tssz)) im just here for the chemical plant. No need to throw fists at me, nope!
((Nods in approval of pics)) good job sega. Even tho we have a fan base about to self-destruct.
This game looks great!
@Greg
I like how you act as if Sega ows you some obligation to make games YOU want.
You sound incredibly pretentious when you talk about how ‘deserve’ more
@Soniman032: He sounds pretentious for wanting Sega to make a good Sonic game? What?
Something that quite a fair amount of people wanted since Sonic’s had a decade full of bad or otherwise mediocre titles?
I think it’s unfair that the Dream Cast Era has the least amount of Stages. When everybody knows the best Sonic game is Sonic Shuffle.
@Greg
I’m not really entirely sure what you believe distinguishes a good platformer with a “speedy character” from a good Sonic game. What’s missing? I was under the impression that that’s basically all Sonic was (with the addition of kickass music and visuals).
Whatever point you’re trying to make regarding Colors isn’t really coming across very clearly.
I want to say a little thing. It is not a crime if people want a game like one in the Sonic series, but still, this is just based on personal preference and opinion, and not fact or truth. Sonic games do not have to be exactly what a classic fan would want to be good, for many complaints and wants are smaller than they they realize, and they can live without getting everything they want.
Plus, the whining and to Sega and wanting a good game in itself is not why other people may bash the whiners who do such whining. Rather, it is the way they are arguing or how they are acting about it that gets the whiners bashed by others. I know that some people want a good Sonic game, but the way they respond to what Sega has shown so far, and how they react to others and how they are acting is all full of immaturity, disrespectful unsociable bashing and how they blow things out of proportion. That is why the whiners are getting bashed by others, not “wanting a good Sonic game” in itself.
That said, I can assure you that, if you were to not be so overly negative, immature and being hostile to others, and if they acted more positive, be more constructive, not blow things out of proportion, respectful mature and sociable, you would likely not get bashed and by others for “wanting a good Sonic game” as much as they are getting bashed now.
Sorry for double posting, but I just wanted to say this:
Enough with the flaming, guys. Let’s let others who have yet to see these screenshots and say what they think, and perhaps talk about them some.
Anyone else have their thoughts on these Chemical Plant screens?
Yes I do!
I think the lighting in this level looks fantastic. It doesnt feel like a city level at all, Sega IMO, did good on giving a city like level its own variety
@Treacher
Congrats on missing the point
I hate these pictures. Because of them, I will force Sega with my fist to release a demo of chemical plant XD
Also, I wanna ask: why in the hell are they remaking levels from Unleashed/Colors? I know we’re celebrating 20 years of Sonic but they’re giving the shaft to plenty of better levels from the Dreamcast and Genesis era…
@Max
you know what im thinking…. since thinks arnt final they might have tons of extras. dlcs and unlockable . i dont know why the ds can have extra stuff and not the main consoles
since *things* arnt final… lol by bad =]
double post: but i also feel they’ll announces that closer to release
I’m liking the look of this game so far. Keep it up SEGA you’re doing a great job.
I’m not very interested in Spagonia, since we already had that level in the same engine, but I’m sure they’re going to put some kind of interesting twist on it to make it feel fresh.
As for Planet Wisp, that is one of the stagest I hoped for most when they announced Generations. Planet Wisp is in my top 5 favorite zones in Sonic history, and the opportunity to play a new layout in Unleashed style in the Hedgehog engine is SUPER exciting to me. Even moreso than if they had picked another level from the classic timeline.
So for people who are just certain that they should have another “classic” stage instead of one from Colors, guess what: opinions.
@X Don’t forget about what Planet Wisp would look like in classic form
@legodex
Oh, I’m not. I also can’t wait to hear new renditions of the BGM. It’s got my favorite stage music of the “modern” games too.
I got a question guys…
Which soundtrack is going to be remixed for Stardust Speedway?
The U.S. or the Jap/Eur version?
That is IF they are gonna use music from Sonic CD.
