Seaside Hill, Rooftop Run Officially Unveiled
This afternoon, Sonic fans received their best look yet outside of actual gameplay for Sonic Generations, as two stages were formally unveiled (and, once again, are in line with what we independently confirmed in June.)
The new trailer, released right before Sony’s GamesCom press conference, cuts between Sonic 2′s Chemical Plant, Rooftop Run in Sonic Unleashed‘s Spagonia, and Seaside Hill from Sonic Heroes. You can also see both modern and classic Tails at the end rendered in CG, and a certain badnik from days of yore is also teased at the very end.
Check it out in the video box below, which comes to us courtesy of Woun. We also thank the dozen or so other news tipsters who flooded the TSSZ News Tips inbox the second the trailer was revealed; we appreciate your efforts as well!

As cool as it is to see almost every levels in the trailer… I think it kinda sucks that there wont be any suprises left when we get to actually play the game… I know its not like they were “new” levels in this game… but I remember when I got Sonic 3 for the first time, I was not prepared for the awesomeness that was Ice cap zone…. I think I’m still recovering for this overdose of cool!
By the way… SEGA? Pretty SEGA? How about Ice Cap zone? And maybe Mystic cave? And why not mushroom hill zone? (Just imagine this enchanted-magical forest in glorious 3D!!! It would put Disney to shame, I’m tellin’ ya! TO SHAME!!!)
Go SEGA!
Oh.. one complaint…. Classic Sonic when he’s in a ball and rolling down a hill dosent semm to built on speed. He seems stuck with a speed limit, like in Sonic 4… what gives?!? I want MOMENTUM!!!!!
I was looking through some old Sonic Retro forums on the Generations hacks and I saw some beta images and areas…interestingly enough I saw a picture of chao….
No really? ?
@Phil R
I don’t understand why they would go to all this trouble and miss one of the most important elements of classic Sonic gameplay, classic Iizuka the Stubborn Mule!
It’s easy to fix BTW
That was awesome…no words can describe the amount of joy I’m feeling right now…so I’ll just say it again…this time in caps and with an exclamation point….THAT WAS AWESOME!
Well, for why not have PC symbol in this trailer =/? Well, just have much rumours of a PC version of Generations, and SEGA not reveled now? Sega o_o where is the just date of the true post if have title “SEGA confirms Generations for PC!”.
They should add some renaissance touches to Spagonia. I mean it looks like a giant party is going on, why not roll with that?
*sigh* This video pisses me off. I have one major complaint about this video. You ready? Here it is! Why isn’t there anything to complain about!!? D:< Gah! lol
@Stephan
Yes “seriously”.
He’s supposed to be ORANGE. Look at the classic color pallet.
A Mother F**king ORANGE Fox.
What’s next? A pink Knuckles?
so happy
@Sonical @Ee
Don’t start this shit again… just don’t…
yahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh omg teh epicness!!!!!!! keep it up sega!!:DDDD 8D
This has nothing to do with the trailer(that looks gr8t btw) but am i the only that thinks that in the cave area in ghz that sonic team was pretty much refrenceing mystic cave zone?
@DalekSaxon Just don’t set yourself up for a disappointment, if the game doesn’t get a good score.
My name says it all!!!!!!
I love how they made Spagonia look more festive!! it adds alot of flavor and creativity to it!!! And look at 0:53! MULTIPLE BRANCHING PATHS!! Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 style gameplay is back and better than ever!!!
So Generic Sonic gets the more interesting spin on Seaside Hill and Retro Sonic gets another Green Hill clone? My, that’s disappointing. Oh wait, I’m forgetting, these are the same people who put a booster in the middle of a ramp in Retro’s Seaside Hill because the physics still suck. (If you sincerely missed it this time that is)
This isn’t Retro Tails being piss yellow instead of orange, this is them not getting the Retro gameplay right AGAIN. And here it’s that much more blatant than it was in Chemical Plant where you’d notice for a short split second.
Darnit SEGA, I want to have some surprises for this game, but you keep putting out all this content and it gets really tempting to look! Stop spoiling everything and leave the rest of the content mysterious!
…..okay I looked, and it looks freakin’ awesome. BUT STILL.
It’s offical…. I have nothing left to complain about.
@Nintendo bros. 64
Quiet Iizuka’s lapdog if you can’t play nice then don’t play at all.
@Greg “The Cat” Longcrier
I bet GHZ was a farce to quell fears, every classic Sonic level after it is going to have boosters on top of boosters it will be even worse in the dreamcast/modern era because they can use the “that’s the way the actual stage was” excuse.
@Greg “The Cat” Longcrier
Generic Sonic…?
Greg… You just saw less than 2 consecutive seconds of each level and have already drawn full conclusions on the way they play.
You are the sourest of pusses.
@Greg “The Cat” Longcrier and Sonical
If all you two are gonna do is bitch, whine and moan about things that are not even close to game-breaking, WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU HERE?!
@Greg Complain,complain,complain……….the game still looks awsome. Also, modern gets a more exciting level because his GAMEPLAY is more exciting. Piss yellow? Really?
@Stephan: If Sega calls Modern Sonic Generic Sonic in their code, I’m calling him Generic Sonic as well. It fits too.
x: That’s funny. That’s exactly what everyone said about Sonic 4. Except that the difference here is that we’ve seen plenty of Generations gameplay in comparison to one trailer with a few seconds of gameplay like Sonic 4 on its debut. And even then, that game still turned out to be shit.
Think before you counter my posts Just a friendly reminder.
@Greg
How the Hell does it fit?!
@Greg,
Nice strawman argument. But, oh how easily he burns.
@Stephan
@sonick123456
I’m joking when I call guys like you Iizuka’s lapdog but if the name fits….
Speaking of names Generic Sonic is indeed the name of modern Sonic in Sega’s marketing, in a art asset CD made by Sega the two Sonics are called ClassicSonic and GenericSonic it’s the same way with the files in the Generation’s demo. Should be obvious why.
From the Webster Dictionary
Definition of GENERIC
a : relating to or characteristic of a whole group or class : general
b : being or having a nonproprietary name
c : having no particularly distinctive quality or application <generic restaurants
I pick C as my final answer
@Sonical
You call it Generic just because it’s Modern Sonic, huh?
Should we pit Sonical and Greg vs. the rest of the fanbase to fight in a football stadium to see who wins?
No one will win anyway. It’ll be a mess of bloody, unpleasable gibs in the end…
@whoareyou?andhowdoyouknowmyname?? To be honest ive neber thought about it that way but youre right it does look like à mystic cave refrence hurray for refrences!
” never”
This looks incredible. I’m gonna play the shit out of this game!!!
@Greg go away!!!!!!
I think it’s funny that we’re now calling the Sonic with MORE detail “generic”. Way to make sense, bros. I’ve always preferred the classic look, but if you’re gonna bash the modern design at least use applicable vocabulary.
@ChaoticFox
On this I’m gonna have to side with you.
Also… is it me or are these people color-blind? They’re calling Tails yellow… he’s gold-orange! He was only yellowish in Heroes and Shadow The Hedgehog and even then some artwork had him look orange. In SA1 he’s orange, in SA:DX he’s gold-orange, in SA2 he’s gold-orange and lately he’s fluctuated. Now they’re nitpicking cuz he’s slightly lighter orange than in Classic (but not complaining about Classic Sonic being so light blue in SOME CGI. lol)
I don’t know if you agree with me on this or not but doesn’t Tails look fine to you? He looks fine to me. :I
@The Dead Skin
Don’t you know!? Evil never wins! XD
@Greg
See this is what I don’t get with ppl who dislike Sonic 4. I don’t care if you like it or not. It’s just the logic behind it that doesn’t make sense. If Sonic 4 is really “shit”, then the Classics are mediocre cuz they’re not THAT much better. They ARE better significantly, but not enough to be praised if Sonic 4 is shit. xD But hey, Sonic 4 has the highest ratings since SA2. And it’s about the same as Colors.
That aside, here’s to hoping Generations has an even higher score! ^_^
o my god Seaside hill is so pretty the colors are so bright claen and water looks like from jungle joyride its a mixture of beach,ruins,grass, maybe under water and runnig on the turtles back so its gonnig to be one epic Seaside hill we never seen.
Rooftop run looks amazing with the balloons add it to it.
chemicaplant zone looking better and better.
Still not thrilled with Rooftop Run (although I saw a brief flash of potential toward the end). It doesn’t look terrible by any means, but it doesn’t have nearly as much WOW factor as literally any other level. Pity.
Yellow Tails is immensely disappointing (and ugly). Sigh… even the official teaser images weren’t THIS yellow. And God damn, is MODERN Tails seriously darker than classic? It’s like they’re deliberately trolling the people who favor the classic designs. With a switch like that, I’m almost surprised they didn’t give green eyes to classic Sonic XD
Sorry Foxboy, maybe it’s you who needs their eyes checked.
@Jacktheinfinite101
Thank GOD for you pointing that out. I was about to be seriously pissed if that were the new Egg Robo design.
I agree that bringing him back after Sonic 4 is kind of boring… I’m hoping that since the boss title is technically “Death Egg” that it will also include a revamped Silver Sonic to sweeten the deal.
I’m with ChaoticFox 100% percent.
In terms of the comment about “Generic Sonic”, anyway.
Will everyone just shut up? I mean jesus, its a fucking game, you dont need to complain about every single detail. To everyone saying that these levels suck and to everyone saying that it’ll be the best game ever, just shut up, wait for the game to come out, THEN bitch about the game all you want
Yeah…Modern Sonic does have the more detail on him. Physically and also in terms of character. (In my opinion)
@darkgomugomu
^^ THIS.
Who seriously gives a shit what colour Tails is in the trailer? He is a damn CG character there. If he’s that colour in the game, then you can piss on yourselves all you want.
This made my morning, I will have perpetual nerdgasms with this game. I just hope the PS3 version doesn’t get a highly inferior version. Sonic Unleashed was fine on PS3, but the Generations demo looked much worse than Unleashed. :/ That’s my only concern so far.
@Greg and Sonical
As much as I prefer Sonic’s classic design, I don’t see what’s the problem about the modern one to be considered “generic”. I always thought the green eyes made him look cooler.
@ChaoticFox
I was alittle skeptical of Rooftop Run and Seaside Hill (which looks more like Ocean Palace) too and rather have Dragon Road and Cool Edge plus Hang Castle and Egg Fleet. But the modern sections have more open areas to walk around and explore like City Escape while the rolling physics of the classic sections have been tweaked alittle.
But like you said, they’re pathetic compared to Green Hill, Chemical Plant, and Stardust Speedway.
I really wish WTF was going through Sonic Team’s minds to rehash classic elements in Sonic 4: Episode 1 when a year later they would be reimagining these things SOOOOOOO much better. >_>
Anyway, the trailer looks really good.
