11 New, Clean Screenshots Inside
Sega’s press vault has formally unveiled Mushroom Hill Zone from Sonic & Knuckles as the next known zone in the portable edition of Sonic Generations.
The vault released 11 in-game shots from the zone, and they are in our gallery below.
Stay with TSSZ News with more from GamesCom; in a little bit, we’ll have several new screenshots from both Seaside Hill and Rooftop Run on the console counterpart.

WHOH WHOH WHAAAT!?! THAT is actually cool!!!!!
I’ll tell ya one thing, it looks a shit ton better than GHZ. Now to see some gameplay to keep the rabid ones from killing dimps
Heck yeah! Though it wasn’t my number one favorite, Mushroom Hill Zone is one of my all time favorite Sonic levels. Since I AM getting the 3DS version of Generations, I can say that I am already excited to play through this level when Generations 3DS comes out!
DIMPS are you changing? This looks GREAT!
Wait…so Generations 3DS is treating S&K as a single game but the HD Generations isn’t?
Sorry for double post but after looking at some more screenshots (I think I got a bit over excited, I think it can still be improved. Hopefully, we will see some gameplay footage from Gamescom tomorrow to see if the game has been improved since E3.
@AM – I dont think DIMPS chose the levels. I think SonicTeam did for both versions. Anyway guys, i wouldnt be loving DIMPS right now. All we need is some gameplay for 3DS Mushroom or GHZ, and see if DIMPS has STILL got it.
@sonichedgehog – Tristan only said that it was from S&K. Nobody said that they would be treated as seperate games, which they most likely wont, so dont get all mad bro
Niiiiiiceeee! looks like they improved….also looks more……2D-ish? quite an improvement, hope they upgraded GHZ, please SEGA show us gameplay, I NEED to see this in action. Also it does seem the 3DS is getting all-new stages, not necessarily from portable games. So far we got:
Green Hill Zone
Mushroom Hill Zone
Launch Base Zone (could be just boss stage)
there is great difference between GHZ and MHZ so Im happy with that. Hope they mix it more. Give me Ice cap or Hydrocity and Ill be happy SEGA!
While not one of my favorite zones from Sonic 3K, Mushroom Hill looks impressive for a handheld system. If the gameplay have been improved from the E3 build, MAYBE, I’ll give the 3DS version one more chance.
Again: “Maybe”.
wait, so is the 3ds version, ALSO going to have console stages? i thought someone said it was only going to be handheld stages.
Epic fangasm peeps
SEGA!!! BECAUSE OF YOU! EACH TIME A SONIC GENERATIONS TRAILER COMES UP, I LOSE 5 PAIRS OF PANTS!!
So Modern is Fall and Classic is Spring? Nice.
Looks pretty mediocre. Especially when compared to the BlobVanDam video. Of course that is pre rendered.
Don’t give your hopes up, boys. Further analysis shows that Dimps copied n’ pasted the level design straight from the original Mushroom Hill Zone.

Proof!
I really, REALLY want this to be a good game.
I bought a 3DS for Megaman Legends 3, and it was cancelled. Sonic Generations was the next game to look forward to, and then we got that shitty Green Hill Zone video. Now though, we’ve seen something that actually looks a bit promising.
It won’t take much to please me. Make the physics for classic Sonic as good as they are on the console version, and have modern Sonic play just how he does in Rush. Then, don’t fuck up the graphics, or the modern Sonic stage layouts.
I have absolutely no problem with the re-used acts for classic Sonic in the 3DS version. Honestly, there is no way they can improve on the levels for classic Sonic. This is certainly the best option they could have taken for the handheld version, rather than copying the layout from the “classic” stages in the console version, or trying to compete with them.
@KrazzeKid102
And that “Maybe” has switched back to an automatic NO.
Dimps, go fuck yourselves in the ass.
Looks gorgeus for a screenshot on the 3DS. I’m hoping it will be great. To be honest (and I know someone’s gonna hate me for saying this) as long as it’s good I won’t be nitpicky about physics. I’m very glad I got a 3DS
Looks slightly better than GHZ, but I bet it doesn’t play better either…..
I never have been nitpicky about physics in the Sonic games (except for the obvious Sonic 06). I love all of the Advance games, especially 2. While there may have been problems with Sonic 4: Episode 1, Dimps really has yet to screw up a portable Sonic title.
@KrazzeKid102
And I just got excited.
Screw you Dimps.
@ QuietGuy why are you cursing Dimps for showing screen shots that look very similar to segements of Mushroom hill act 1. For all we know there could be different segments that are new to the act. And if that is true then who cares Classic Sonic will have redesigned levels of the advanced and modern levels. Plus the Big Arm boss battle had slight changes to its form of attacking so it not like Dimps copied and bpasted the boss battle as well.
@A132 – Its true, we shouldn’t base it off the screenshots, but the fact that most of those screenshots resembled exactly the original. Well, I guess that’s why the Modern levels are there for. Still, fucking Dimps, you made me get excited over this shit for nothing. If other 3DS stages are almost exact clones to the original, then I AM NOT buying this game.
@ KrazzeKid102-Thanks for showing this to us. However, like I just said, we should see some gameplay first, and if it looks TOO much to the original, then we can all complain.
Like I said a looonng time ago, the 3DS version was just a fast shoe-in for money. Fuck off Dimps.
I can’t believe Aaron lied to us though. He said the 3DS was going through BIG changes. My ass.
I do not think that this just a cut and paste job because in these screenshots I can see places that were not in the original for Classic Sonic.
@ Ricardo – The big change for the moment is that the graphics look better. We need gameplay to prove if the physics and character movement were part of the big changes.
Also come to think of it didn’t Iizuka said that he wanted to replicate the classic gameplay in that UK nintendo interview. Maybe that’s why the classic sonic levels are the same. Plus Act 2 has some different segments like M. Sonic grining on the roots in what looks to be an underground tunnel
Meh. Wish they’d take this 3DS money and put it into 360/PS3 Generations.
@serpx- don’t be made that us ninty fans got this and the consoles didn’t
Fuuuuuuuuuuu– I would literally kill a stranger to get Mushroom Hill on the console version
Lousy second-rate handheld stealing all the content -pout-
@Overbound
And not on the 3DS
@Krazee
So? I’d still pay to play graphically updated remakes of the old zones, even if they featured literally NOTHING new. I don’t own a 3DS, and I can’t comment on the gameplay because I haven’t cared to watch the videos for this version,, but this shit looks ballin’ – at least graphically.
@ChaoticFox
Dang, you really have a hatred for the 3DS, huh?
@Stephan
Not really. I don’t see much of a reason to own one, but I don’t have anything AGAINST it, per se.
I just think it’s a little sad that the 3DS version (which, so far, is just seeming like a watered down, second-rate imitation) is getting exclusive levels, for the simple fact that had those levels been brought to the console version (aka. the REAL version), they would have looked that much better.
If Sega really finds it THAT necessary to pander to Nintendo-exclusive fans (the few who don’t own more than one console), the least they could have done for a game of this magnitude would be to give them a full-fledged Wii version. These portable knock-offs of console titles are just a little bit sad, because they simply lack the ability to measure up to their home console counterparts.
But truthfully, I’m just jealous. Mushroom Hill is the bees knees, and I’m just sad it won’t be getting the ultra-gorgeous HD treatment it deserves.
lolz why must we hate on systems, i’ll never understand it x.x
Also @ChaoticFox there are PLENTY of people out there who own multiple consoles including the wii. I was just talking to someone the other day who was going on and on about how she could not WAIT to get her hands on COD: Modern Warfare 3, and as soon as the LOZ: Skyward Sword trailer came out she had a nerdgasm about that, then she looked up and saw the Sonic Generations sonic generations boxarts and nearly had a heart attack *yea this girl was fun to talk to….. minus the COD x.x*
plus it’s already been stated that Sonic just sells better on nintendo systems. I’m not trying to start a war or anything, just stating what’s been stated.
I actually hope they make 3DS stages of iconic PORTABLE stages though…. I WANT CHAOS ANGEL HD XD
DARN IT SEGA!! DX This stage would’ve been so nice on the console versions rather than Sky Sanctuary! XC (Or at least give us Lava Reef. xD)
I’d say they were treating S&K as it’s own title cuz of the Sonic 3 part but that’s just a boss so that might not count. But then that STILL sucks cuz that means that they’re SAYING they’re considering Sonic 3 & Knuckles 1 full title yet there are NO STAGES actually from Sonic 3 in either version! The Launch Base Zone Final Boss is the ONLY sign of Sonic 3 we see in Generations at ALL (counting both versions of the game!). What the hell? Why can’t I have my Ice Cap Zone, darn it!? XD
Anyhoo this actually looks good too. We’ll have to see gameplay but even that probably won’t bother me since it looks better than Sonic 4. I ejoyed Sonic 4 and this I’m sure is at least much better so I’d enjoy it even more. Not LOVE it, just enjoy it. The console version tho.. that’s on a whole different level. XD (litterally… gosh darn it. >w> lol)
@Keigo
That’s… exactly what I was saying? So if so many people own multiple consoles, what point is there in released a watered down version of the same game when MOST of your audience will still be able to experience the game as it was meant to be played (in full-fledged glorious HD)?
And again, like I said, I don’t necessarily have a problem with Sonic being on Nintendo systems… I just think a Wii version would have made for a superior product. A game like Generations isn’t meant to be a dinky handheld title. It’s supposed to be big, juicy, and epic. The Wii might not be HD, but it could have delivered something at least as gorgeous as Colors.
All I’m saying is that Mushroom Hill looks awesome… but it could have looked so much MORE awesome if they had included it on a different platform. I have nothing against the 3DS, I just think it’s a shame that they’re wasting their time making a half-assed version of the same product, when they could have used those assets to further improve the quality of the version that most people are going to play/talk about.
Also, what’s up with people saying that S3K counting as one title means there should be two levels from it? Isn’t that backwards? Counting S3K as TWO games would mean two levels… but since both versions are treating it as ONE game, that means one level apiece. What’s so hard to understand there?
@ChaoticFox
While I do agree that I wish they had made a Wii version with, say, the 3DS’ level set, the amount of assets required for that is vastly different than what is needed for a 3DS game.
They reason they make a cheap handheld version is because it’s cheap to make. It’s a bit like saying “Why are you making a toy house when you could build a real house?”.
Because there’s a market for toy houses, is all. It would have been nice to have a Wii version too, but that would require an entire different set of assets, and it’s possible Dimps didn’t have the resources available at the time.
We want this for the Xbox 360 version too SEGA, addon or something please!
huh…I’m slightly more interested in the 3DS version….I guess….that’s a positive? To be slightly more interested in a version that’s obviously going to be inferior to the console release?
@x
Yeeeaaaahhhh, I GET it… it’s just kind of a bummer XD I’m jealous and greedy, dammit!
One has to wonder just how much the production costs might’ve risen for a Wii version, though. Unlike Colors DS, this game doesn’t just look like a sequel to Sonic Rush, meaning an entirely new set of higher quality assets had to be created ANYWAY. And if you consider how much harder the hardware has to work to give us the unnecessary 3D effect, it makes you wonder how much nicer the game could’ve looked without it.
Alas, none of this really makes any difference, as Sega has ultimately decided to create a 3DS version, despite the fact that such a decision will drastically reduce their potential sales and profit margin. All I can say is SAD DAY!
I thought that this might be cool, but I was wrong.
Aw! no flying battery?? I am Dissapoint!
Mario was here first.
@ChaoticFox
Well the first thing I notice in the 3DS version is how.. there’s no 3D sections. :p
Classic and Modern Sonic are essentially the same game types. So there’s two whole different teams for a Wii version right off. Then I notice how even though this Mushroom Hill looks a lot better than Green Hill, how there’s little to no actual background stuff going on. The levels are a bit barren. Compare that to say, the complexity of the backgrounds in Planet Wisp, and the amount of world objects needed to be built, textured, etc. I would probably guess that a 3DS team is about a third the size of a Wii team for a game like this.
@x
Whether the majority of the gameplay is in 3D, the models still are, for both classic and modern (also, you’ll notice at least one grinding segment in these screens that shows a 3D perspective). I see your point regarding the background objects though. Makes sense.
And while the gameplay may be similar in essence to the Rush series, this fully 3D title in a mostly 2D perspective thing still entirely new territory for Dimps (unless you count the awkwardly controlled Wii-version of Unleashed), especially considering that they don’t really have any experience with the 3DS’s hardware.
Which just brings me back to my other point, that rather than trying to appease the extremely limited demographic of 3DS owners who don’t also own a non-Nintendo console (because really, it seems like the sole purpose of this game is to keep Nintendo-exclusive fans from feeling left out), they could have absorbed some of this stuff into the console version and let Dmps help out with some of the non-gameplay related grunt work.
If the goal is to create a quality product, then that would obviously be the way to go… but in terms of making money, I really can’t say one way or the other. Hell, with the way people are hooked on this game as it is, they could have probably cut the console version’s level list in half (before the leak) and sold almost the same number of units. So I guess it makes sense why they don’t feel they need to bother adding more content. This game’s pretty much a guaranteed buy no matter how many levels it has XD
Somehow, that looks more like the 3-D graphics the DS would pull rather than the 3DS. I know the 3DS can do better than that. Then again, it’s still a new system, and the newest games for any system tend to be clumsy.
The Nintendo DS is the top-selling 7th-generation system, with only the PS2 outselling it of every video game system ever made. So I do think there are a lot of people out there with a DS and no other system, let alone a non-Nintendo system. While the Wii has been losing ground as of late, the tremendous start that it had would also lead me to believe there are a lot of people out there with a Wii and no other home system. So I do think there are many people out there who only have Nintendo systems.
While Sonic sells best in Nintendo’s territory, he doesn’t sell quite as well when he’s portable. I’ve never been too certain why. Nevertheless, Sonic on a Nintendo portable still sells better than Sonic on a Microsoft or Sony system (especially Sony thanks to a bad first impression with the buggy port of Sonic Heroes). Take a look at sales of Sonic Unleashed or Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing, for instance. I think Sonic Generations would benefit, profit-wise, by having a Nintendo presence. Especially because it will undoubtedly be at least $20 cheaper.
@Ophelia – I think that we can all agree that the 3D graphics you know the short of poping out graphics will look better in front of us. It has been said time and time again that the 3D effect can’t be represented in screen shots or video. So saying that is kind of debunk.
@ChaoticFox
I think that’s kind of the issue, whether they wanted to make a quality product or not.
Though I think “cash-in” is a term that has quickly become a buzz-word that is tossed arounf FAR too o, it’s essentially what I think this game is. Which is not to say a “cash-in” can have no heart or pollish, the goal is to make a game for as cheap as possible.
This is all of course, just my speculation.
They could have also chosen to develop for the 3DS because console manufacturers offer incentives to developers making games on fledgling systems. I wouldn’t be surprised if Nintendo offered a little push to get a popular game like Sonic on their new system asap. It would also be in Sega’s best interest for the 3DS to succeed as well for their future projects.
This is all just speculation of course.
It would have been nice to have as many versions of Generations as possible though. le sigh.
@Ophelia
But this game isn’t FOR the regular DS, so its sales aren’t really relevant. The 3DS has sold rather poorly by comparison, so Sega’s essentially shooting themselves in the foot by releasing this for a system with such a small userbase.
The success of the Wii was why I suggested that if Sega needed to make this game for a Nintendo console, they should have done it for the Wii. The final product would have been drastically superior, and the game itself would be able to reach (and sell to) a much wider audience. Yes, it would have cost more to develop, but I think it probably would have balanced out… especially if they retained the exclusive levels, as anyone owning a PS3/360 as well as a Wii could be therefore enticed to get both version.
Aw dude! This is really neat!
I would have much preferred Lava Reef personally, but this looks good. I just got a 3DS so I’ll be keeping an eye on this one.
This looks good.Even tough I can’t buy both versions of generations I can’t wait for the soundtrack.Hopefuly all the tracks of the two versions will be on the same album.
