Should You Still be Concerned?
Just coming in via a News Tip is the first gameplay video of Mushroom Hill Zone from the 3DS edition of Sonic Generations, presumably form Gamescom. It is principally courtesy of German website N-Life.
Off camera, we see a fair bit but not a complete picture of classic Sonic gameplay from the zone, and at least visually the stage appears to faithfully recreate several elements from the Sonic and Knuckles stage…if not the entire level layout from Act 1.
Other judgments will certainly be made, and you can make those below in the comments section. Now that we know Mushroom Hill is being shown at Gamescom, we should expect more in due time. Thanks to Pointlessname for tipping us. If you have news to share, be sure to share it with us by clicking Send News Tips at the top of every page.

I don’t think we can say much about this since it’s just an exact copy of Act 1.
It is working pretty well now. The physics are still a bit quirky but this is great! I will definitely buy it now. I know it is a rehash of the original but pretty good indeed. Also, love the sound effects.
I have to say, my opinion on the 3DS version is starting to sway, I might just get it.
0:44 LOLGLITCH
NOT A BAD BUT FUNNY ONE XD
huh an exact copy of Mushroom Hill act 1…I can’t say this game is going to be an exact copy of older levels with an HDish makeover….because remember we also have Modern Sonic who (hopefully) has completely different designed levels….I don’t know…it’s a demo…it’s not the final product…I can’t really say much except… “…ok…”….
Sorry for the double post. But I have something strange to say. Dimps keep up the good work. (That is perhaps the oddest thing I have ever mentioned, maybe I’ll come to my senses soon)
Backgrounds look better than I initially thought
I’m so in love with Mushroom Hill. I don’t care if the level layout is a direct copy of the original… I’d still pay to play a literal recreation of any of the classic levels in 2.5D (and that’s not even taking into account the new content for modern Sonic).
Looks like the DS’s second screen is still as big of a waste of space as ever. Can’t wait til we get to experience that same worthless gimmick all over again with the Wii U!
Horrible Physics – Only in 3DS version.
Spindash SPEED FAIL!
And AS PER USUAL the game looks better in motion than it does in freeze frame…. who would have guessed XD.
I want to see modern gameplay in motion though, cause at the moment it’s the only thing that i’ve REALLY been concerned about in the 3DS version :O
Wow….this guy SUCKS! Lol but this gameplay looks really impressive.
*sighs* It’s like Nintendo can’t create anything totally different without being hated for it nowadays…
Um hi did anyone notice at like 0:28 – 0:32, when rolling up the ramp he DIDN’T uncurl!? 0.0
Also, this is only the second stage we’ve seen and it’s also a classic one and this is Classic Sonic. So I’m going to assume that the classic stages will be exactly the same from Classic and slightly different for Modern while the modern stages will be exactly the same for Modern Sonic but different for Classic Sonic.
While it’s not AS cool as a complete remake like in the console version it IS still cool to see it this way too. (I mean 1 the same and 1 different? Nah that’s cool. =D)
You have to admit it (at least graphically) looks fantastic.
Wow the stage is an exact copy of the original? That’s disappointing, can’t wait to see the modern version though.
looks great nice graphics
This game will obviously not fare as well as the console’s Sonic Generations, especially if its’ releasing the same month. Dimps would have the nerve to copy and paste the classic stages, rather than take the console route and redevelop the levels. Talk about lazy. Such a shame, I hope this is canceled before it ruins the franchise’s reputation further. Good job DIMPs.
The graphics look quite nice and (hate me if you will) the physics look fine to me. A few tweaks here and there but it still looks good. I’m loving the music.
I am not going to judge and nitpick this months before it’s release. I’m gonna give them a chance. Who’s to say Dimps hasn’t learned from past mistakes?
@Serpx
How could Sonic’s rep get ruined even more after 2006? Just because it’s the exact same layout doesn’t mean it’s reputation-ruining.
@Stephan: More shitty Sonic games just beats the dead horse more. Just when we have hope for a positive outlet to Sonic’s future, we get games like this that quite frankly don’t look much enjoyable, and are obviously very lazy in their craft. I haven’t heard much positive things from those who have played this game, and this late in the ballgame, I don’t expect that to change much. We’ll see, but I’m personally not bringing my expectations up for this game.
Oh so very, very lovely
Can’t wait to see Casino Night and the Advance and Rush selections
@Serpx
Original levels would be better (I am sure modern sonic has them) but this is pretty good. The graphics look great. And it appears they have gotten the physics down (just a few tweaks should do at this point). Hopefully, we get more gameplay videos from the mushroom hill and I want to take a look at green hill again to see if things have changed. Please keep the videos coming!
I don’t really see an issue with them rehashing the level layout. I mean those stages layouts are still very much enjoyable. So far I’m very happy that they went and made the physics more in tune with the current console versions. Hyped for being able to play through Mushroom Hill in true 3D. Now all that we need is a clearer video or Sega to possibly give us a 3DS specific trailer. Overall definitely getting this version.
Uncurling is gone, and it seems a lot less floaty.
@Serpx
Lazy, sure… but how exactly would re-releasing content which has already proven itself to be good damage the franchise’s reputation? That doesn’t really make sense :/
its gonna take more than just a re-imagined mushroom hill, to make me change my mind about dimps.
Actually if you look at this carefully, the physics have at least improved. Level design is pretty much a carbon copy, but hey, there’s still the modern version. And even if they pull the copy-and-paste trick with the Modern levels, they still have classic to design differently. So no matter what, there will be a new experience in some way.
So the classic stages on the 3DS maybe the exactly the same as the older games, but what you dont realise is that it brings back good memories, to the people such as myself that played these type of games in the 90s but sure the Next gen version beats the stuffing out of this game, but you gotta understand the 3DS just released, in the future games in general for it will improve and start to work more of the power, just look at the xbox 360, when i first played it in 2005/6 it was like the orginal xbox, now look at it with unleashed, battle field ect, though ps3 always looked good tbh
I don’t think the 3DS version will essentially be something far worse compared to the console version but more like something different. If they do this right this game could definitely be a must have for 3DS owners. We’ve yet to see any game play of the special stages(though the screen shots tell us a lot) I also can’t wait to see the bosses on the 3DS version. i know we’ve already seen big arm but i wonder if they changed some things about that boss. 3DS version i doubt is going to receive low treatment simply because i think they know how important this is for them and how significant this game needs to be especially the handheld version mainly because this will be sonic’s debut on that system and if it’s not something good i think that would definitely shoot down ppls faith in them with handheld sonic games.
@darkgomugomu
How about a 100% new experience? -_-
Anyways, the physics don’t look that improved. He doesn’t seem to speed up that much when he rolls downhill, and is it me, or is Sonic launching up the ramp faster than was going before he reached it? But then again, the console version is scripting each ramp and slope, so the same thing could possibly be here too.
@ChaoticFox
It doesn’t give anyone any true incentive to buy the game. If someone wants to play Classic Sonic, how would he feel if he only gets to play the exact same stages, only slightly graphically inferior (if not completely barren and bland) and not as fun to play (lack of proper physics)? If someone wants to play Modern Sonic, expecting Sonic Rush, how would he feel if he found stages even MORE linear, and…BORING, even?
Although the console version of Classic Sonic doesn’t have perfect spot-on physics, the level design is completely new, and incredible too (sans the scripted ramps/slopes and future use of speed boosters), making a new experience and a proper homage to classic Sonic. Modern Sonic also brings a heavily new experience.
Both versions have their flaws and what not, but I’m sure as hell not going to pay money for a version that has exponentially greater flaws, ESPECIALLY if it’s being developed by the same team who’ll bring us future episodes for Sonic 4.
@Stephan: Not really. The outpouring of anger and disappointment from fans is relatively recent. I mean, it was always there since the Wii launch, but it’s only now that it’s getting loud. What started that is that the Wii only had maybe two really good years and on both occasions it was half the year instead of through the whole thing.
The problem the 3DS is having is that Nintendo gambled on 3D, like they did motion control, only this time it seems like the gamble didn’t pay off. There are certainly reasons why; personally, I think 3D is a cool gimmick, but on the downside, how many games are going to properly utilize it? Half assed 3D in movies has kind of killed the momentum. Not to mention there’s the worry of eye strain and eye damage, which has always been a looming spectre with the 3D tech we have. Sure, they say right on there that you should take breaks every so often from the 3D, but problem is, who even pays attention to that? They’ve said it for typical games too forever now.
Luckily for Nintendo, early signs show the price drop turning things around for the 3DS in Japan.
The Wii U can be salvaged. The problem is Nintendo completely borked the presentation. It’s not a good sign when your big reveal at a convention can’t name you five games and you never actually see the system in question. There were people who were confused and thought it was an add-on.
DIMPS- “When you can’t make a good game, just give an old good game a coat of paint and call it a day.”
fuck it i quit. Enjoy or hate it however you like
ILL BE HAPPY IF I GET MY MUSIC PLANT. THATS ALL IM ASKING.
But really, I dont think its that big a deal if its just a rehash. I mean, it shows a lack of creativity and brand new levels wouldve been awesome, but its not a game ruining scenario.
@Krazee
Graphically inferior, I suppose is a matter of opinion. This may not have the detailed intricacies of 16-bit pixel art, but it’s still attractive in its own way, and it’s an entirely new way to see the older content.
I’ve said multiple times that graphically updated identical content appeals to me. Yes, the sub-par physics are a bummer (to some), but that’s not really relevant to my comments regarding Serpx saying that the mere idea of re-using old content with a fresh coat of paint is somehow tarnishing the franchise’s reputation.
If he had made based his comment on something regarding physics or gameplay, I could have understood… but when your only rationale for such a statement is copy/pasted level design (from great source material), it doesn’t really hold up.
I never said I was buying this, lol. I just don’t see it as that much of a deal-breaker because the classic versions of the levels are identical recreations of the originals.
Wow, screw you DIMPS.
@Darkgomugomu – Your right, either way, we still get a new experience.
@KrazeeKidd102 – Not even the console versions of Sonic Generations are a 100% new experience. The City Escape beginning, for Modern Sonic is still the same, and so is the GHZ Classic one. Dont even try to back this up with Nostalgia purposes shit. So dont say anything to Darkgomugomu, because its IMPOSSIBLE for a game to have a 100% new experience. duh.
@Ricardo
Impossible for a game like Generations to be 100% new, but not impossible for ANY game. That’s just silly.
Does the guy playing the game know that he don’t have to use the circle pad EVERY TIME you play a 3DS game? Fail. >_>
THe game DOES look better in motion. As for physics, it looks like Dimps finally starting to stop screwing around.
Rolling and jumping (like the Gamescom City Escape build) looks like it’s been improved, and when rolling off one ramp Sonic didn’t pointlessly uncurl. As for level design…..*facepalm* not for that it’s an exact replica of MHZ Act 1, but they put level design intended for KNUCKLES (the spike pit) in Sonic’s level design.
Graphics: Certainly been improved from the E3 version.
Gameplay: Level layout is an EXACT copy of the original, the physics still sucks compared to the 360/PS3 versions (despite the speed boosters and the scripted ramps plus slopes), and its from our same buddies at Dimps who’ve brought us Sonic 4.
Sorry but Mushroom Hill deserves better than this.
Regrading the poll: Yes. Despite the lack of Game Gear levels (we can thank Iizuka for that), zones from the Sonic Advance trilogy and the Sonic Rush series are both MUCH better for the 3DS version than zones that originated from the CONSOLE games.
Ah, the new poll…
Alright, let’s PRETEND the 3DS version truly met expectations (better graphics/correct physics/better level design for modern Sonic too). Why should the 3DS version ONLY contain content from Sonic’s portable history? Shouldn’t it also contain zones that the console version doesn’t have?
But then again, if the console version had a better list of zones, then I wouldn’t have objected in hte first place.
I would have personally loved to see Sunset Hill (Sonic Triple Trouble) zone with the train level. That would have been amazing. But this is great to. By the way, does anyone know if they are adding levels from the Sonic Advance, Rush, Rush Adventure, and Colours?
Regrading the physics, I take it back. They’ve much improved from Green Hill at E3.
Also, the uncurling has been fixed. Now let’s see if Dimps could update the barren wastelands of zones into something worth PLAYING for modern Sonic.
In the end, all the comments boil down to: “Dimps blows”.
Does anyone remember that guy who did a CG movie of what was it? Like….30 seconds of Mushroom Hill Zone? Is this anywhere close to what that CG movie was? Just curious.
@ 1:21
God dammit, they kept that fucker?
@Shadowbane
No, but you can’t really blame it either. That video was entirely pre-rendered by a computer that likely had quite a bit more horsepower than the 3DS.
That being said, I personally still think this looks great.
Just watched the video.
Looks like they actually fixed the uncurling issue; that should make a lot of folks happy.
@ChaoticFox – Well, it may be silly, or it may not, depending the way you look at it. To me, a 100% new experience Sonic game would be like having new worlds/hubs, changing physics comepletely, having a new voice actor, having only new characters arrive in cutscenes, etc. Other than that, i dont think ive really seen a game that has had a 100% new experience, that is, if you look at it my way.
Btw, can ANYONE hear the music?? All i hear is loud beats, but i cant really hear the theme :/ and i wonder why they only uploaded Classic Sonic’s gameplay….are they Classic Fans or something, that didnt wanna play Modern?
@Ricardo – The music was hard to hear but you can slightly hear the high points that the music makes.
I for one believe that the sonic fan base is beyond repair. All this talk of a new experience in a game that is more of a best of sonic. Cursing Dimps to death because they chose to model classic Sonic stages to be similiar to the old. I’m willing to bet that if the classic Sonic stages were completely different people would be b******* that Dimps didn’t respect the level design.
What worst is that Sega is trying to unite both the Classic and Modern Sonic fan but at the same time they are accidently creating a new hole in the fan base which is HD version vs. 3DS version. It stupid to believe that some people wish the 3DS version to be cancelled so their favorite zone would be included in the HD version.
Sega should just stop worrying about a so called fan base that is with them in the good time but back stabs them when they have a small hiccup.
it seems like the physics have improved slightlly. seems like this might be better than expected
