Just as you Expected (Hopefully)
Following on quite nicely from yesterday’s footage of the Classic portion of City Escape, we now have the ‘modern’ equivalent. The video doesn’t show off as much as the Classic half, but we do see around 50% of the level and some routes that may not have been shown off via the E3 footage or the leaked gameplay earlier this month.
The first impressions seem to be that nothing has changed, at least in the level design. Of course we haven’t seen all the routes that can be taken, so changes may well have been made.
What do you think? Better or worse than you expected? Do you prefer the Classic Sonic gameplay? Let us know in the comments below.
Gameplay:

WHERE IS MAH MUSIC!!!???
SEGA where is IT!?
What the Hell was that at the end? Glitch death? Also something that looks like a loading screen.
Good god, unless the controls are THAT horrible, you’d think none of these people playing the demos have ever played a video game before.
Aww man. I wanted to see what was new with the truck part. Or maybe that’s not finished and they don’t want you to see it in the demo? 0.0 idk
Also… little rant here, but man you raging nerds are really annoying with your “This player sucks (because they don’t meet the standard of a pro gamer like myself *snicker*)” deal. Or at least that’s how I end up seeing it.
It’s just a game, not everyone is that great at it and that being said THIS isn’t even bad. It’s not GOOD, but it’s good enough to get through the stage. And since it’s good enough to do that I really don’t see why we should even CARE how good or bad someone else plays. I have a friend who says she’s always annoyed when our other friend gets stressed and tells her what and what not to do in a game and eventually takes the controller from her. People like him have MAJOR issues if you can’t like let someone play the game, enjoy themselves and just enjoy looking at the stage. >.> lol
Looking at the level designs of both the classic and modern demos of this stage at Gamescom, they’ve seemed to of placed boxes in areas where there were originally pits. That alone has me convinced that what they’re showing off is probably some kind of easier difficulty setting.
It seems like there are tons of routes in the boarding section. I know im gonna search for hours trying to find all of them XD
I want the music! DX
You call that gameplay bad? Do you have any idea how girls in my country play? They press a button, I swear they can’t! They can’t even pull and push the triggers, you know that? I have to tell them over and over, and even do it infront of them but they’ll never get it! I wish I could show you guys a video, you’re going to think a newly born baby is playing… or even like a cat is playing! I swear, they are THAT bad.
@FoxBoy Ok I’m guessing that’s you Axxidous XD
Now see the problem isn’t that some people suck at these conventions, the problem is that EVERYONE SUCKS! Not everyone is a skilled gamer I understand that but 97% of footage from conventions (not counting when the developers play) is absolutely dreadful. My first run of Modern GHZ was better than what we see. Take for instance the Chemical Plant footage, that idiot was holding the spindash down so long it made me wish that Sonic could do one of his impatient animations while charging his spindash. Now I know you’re going to say something like maybe these people weren’t familiar with what they were playing but I say bullshit to that. When I think of a convention, I think of tons of hardcore fan geeks in one location. Game conventions should be attended by true hardcore gamers as opposed to people who play games once and a while. When I see 97% shit gameplay it baffles me how some idiot is going to these conventions while neither of us who are both much more qualified are sitting at our computers watching.
What’s even worse is when someone is put up to recording it. Take once again the Chemical Plant footage, that was played while the 360 was hooked up to a capture device meaning they payed somebody to play the game. IF they’re going to waste money on people to play it, make it someone who has skill, so unprofessional. The purpose of gameplay videos is to make the games look awesome and exciting, if the video is just some idiot running into a wall repeatedly, it just pisses us off.
@58SlugDrones Dare I ask what country you live in?
GIVE ME THE MUSIC! NOW!!!! i hate gameplay’s : O they’re showing what’s is inside game, and you have no fun in beating it : O
No Foxboy.
EVERYBODY fucking blows at video games at conventions and/or press footage. It has never changed and we will continue to hate it.
Deal with it.
and AGAIN, we dont get to see the full epic truck chase scene at the end. :/
1:39…that guy crashing into the wall was hilarious. Was it just me or did it actually make a thumping sound?
It´s looking good, it has all memorable City Escape parts, even improved.
I just hope all those button and pit indicators are just for the demo or can be turned off
@58SlugDrones:
I…that…
What?
Aside from the person playing so bad, City Escape still looks as fun as it was back at E3.
Love the wide open areas for Sonic to explore. And the multiple paths really encourage that.
Kudos to Sonic Team for making City Escape more fun than the original.
I see a change at 1:03 . It seems SonicTeam added more barrels, or whatever they’re called. Is SonicTeam trying to make the levels easier for us? I thought SEGA said this game was for the Hardcore’ Sonic Fans? Oh well, overall this is supposed to be a fun game anyway.
Im glad SEGA is making the game easier than harder, but we dont know for sure yet.
looks nice gameplay of modern sonic
Anyone else notice the Numa Numa song at the beginning of the video?
Now if only THAT was a part of the game.
I’m guessing this is Easy Mode since the area with the hexagonal platforms over the pit is filled with the platforms.
The hell. This guy wasn’t bad at all, I don’t know what some of you are griping about. This level looks awesome, and again, I LOVE the openness of the level. It’s like Adventure mixed with Unleashed, and that’s tight. Can’t wait.
You now, so far, all Sonic retail titles have been hard to complete (achievement/trophy wise). I don´t think this is going to be any different. There will be some hard challenges, or hard mode, or something like that. Don´t be afraid, the game won´t be easy to 100%.
At the end of the video the player boosts through an invisible wall and/or falls to trigger a script and falls through the level geometry to his death CLASSIC SONIC TEAM they are being very true to Sonic Adventure 2 by including wonderful elements like that.
Whew boy…. this is exactly what I remember from Sonic adventure 1 & 2…. HORRIBLE controls. This game can’t redeem Sonic in 3D. The conclusion is pretty simple, Sonic Colors nailed how a modern Sonic game should be. The 3D should only be used on a “straigth” line. So exploration. Leave the exploration to the 2D part, again, like Sonic Colors did.
Seriously… did you see how the snowboard part went?!?! shit. Pure shit. Even if it’S “cool” to see Sonic ride down at the speed of light, following his rainbow… it’s not fun.
I hope the modern levels in Sonic Generations follow the Sonic colors ratio, 1/3 of the time in 3D, 2/3 of the time in 2D.
@Phil R
…And let the bashings begin!
@HeageHawg
Yeah… I know.. I started it… Sorry everyone! Sonic is cool, so Sonic is perfect. Nothing wrong with this game. Shadow is cool, I love Silver and the 20+ characters in the Sonic universe. I love it when I bump a wall or I fall in a pit I did’nt see because I ran too fast.
Seriously…. I’ll stop here, but don’t get me wrong, I’ll get this game and I will love it like my own child (maybe not…) but can’t we get one Sonic game that is flawless? Just one? Mario can do it, why not Sonic?
@HeageHawg
Heh looks like someone just rang the bell for Pavlov’s dog here.
@PhilR
Even Mario has his flaws.
@Stephan
The flaws of that series and few and far between Sonic on the other hand literally has a sea of bad ideas and designs. No series or game is perfect but that doesn’t excuse the many faults of Sonic Team.
@Dr.EggFang
Oh, I know that. I’m still trying to shake off Shadow The Hedgehog.
@Stephan
Shadow the hedgehog…. was it something or what!
Anyway… I don’t want people to think that I bitch this game just for the sake of being an a**hole. Its just that this game represent so much for so many gamers, I just hope it will be the ultimate Sonic expirience for old and younger fans alike.
*wipes a tear from the corner of the eye*
Wait. I think I read (in a previous article) that there’s THREE gameplay styles: Classic, Modern, and “Dreamcast”. If so, where’s the Dreamcast Sonic? Did I miss something?
@Dr. Phil: Mario games? Flawless? They’re not. Furthermore, it’s much easier to make a good Mario game than it is to make a good Sonic game, at least from my experience and from what I’ve observed from playing both series since I was old enough to pick up a controller. They just have different flaws alot of times, and what one person finds to be flawed, another may not.
And about the gameplay footage, they guy kinda sucked and there’s nothing noteworthy here. I think I heard Sonic Team talking about different difficulty modes for the levels, I could be mistaken though. I like it when you’re not punished for straying a bit off the main course, the split paths and more open areas make this seem more fun than Unleashed HD did.
@Chaos Controller: There are 3 eras of stages, only 2 types of Sonic.
@DoctorEggman
Thanks anyway though
Well, now I feel a bit disappointed
Expositions like these are not for “hardcore” game players; it’s never been. It’s meant for the press. If the press people play video games at all, then they just play a little bit of many games for reviews.
@DoctorEggman
If it wasn’t for those god-awful bird stages in SMG2 i would be willing to call that game flawless
@Ophelia
It’s for GAMING press, not the New York Times. If the gaming press doesn’t have any experience with video games, they shouldn’t be reviewing them.
@Phil R.: How do you know the control is terrible if you haven’t played it? And also, the player is playing terribly, so don’t bash the game because the person doing this sucks.
And I bet you only you think Sonic Colors nailed how a 3D game should be because most of it was in 2D.
@ChaoticFox
Fair enough, but i the case of Generations, this series has always been known for its steep learning curve. My friends can’t even play these games, at least not well, just because the series isn’t accessible, so this kind of thing is something im used to seeing, even from a “hardcore” gamer.
Love the additions the street-boarding intro, like the grind rails and multiple paths. Also, the wide open areas look amazing.
I’m one of those people that do think it might just be impossible to make a 3D platformer that moves as fast as Sonic and controls “perfect”, but I do think it could be improved from Unleashed.
In Unleashed, when you were in the towns Sonic’s controls were great. They regulated his speed and everything felt perfectly responsive. But then you got into an action stage and the slightly tap sent him careening off like an ice cube in a frying pan. It would have been great to have Sonic’s tight controls from the hub stages that could BUILD to his max speed. Or use his boost for quick acceleration.
In my opinion, I really feel like a kind of button action to transition between controllable and Sonic speed would really work in the Unleashed style of play. I know, unlike Mario, Sonic’s never needed a run button before but he’s never been quite so fast before either. Just tossing thoughts at the wall.
On an unrelated note, I really hope they have an option to turn off all the context sensitive button instructions. Or I hope they’re just for the demo versions. That could really old really quick.
@Phil R I love it how you say the controls are shit yet you haven’t played modern city escape. Play the damn level first then you can bitch about it later.
0:43-1:00=BEAUTIFUL!!!
If SEGA thought they had a successful game with Sonic Colors, wait until they see the win Sonic Generations in going to have!
Something I never understood and probably never will is how is it that Sonic’s strong enough to blow away a car or trolley with just a slight touch? I’m not griping necessarily, it’s simply something I will…..never…..understand….
Now that I’ve seen the video, that doesn’t look half bad for a first time. The running into walls was entirely from using boosts under the impression that there’s a straight path ahead or the nonlinear cafe section of the stage where it might not be clear which way you’re supposed to go. From the comments here, I had the impression that Sonic would spaz left and right and crash into everything like he was blind.
Also, gaming press typically does not play games to the end. They’ll play the first two hours or so, enough to write about it, unless they’re notified by someone, maybe a fan of the game or someone from the company, specifically to finish the game.
Even though White Acropolis has scarred me for life, the boarding sequences here looks pretty good, even though it had an ’06 moment when Sonic hit the GUN robot and did a slo-mo tumble =P.
