Iizuka Grilled Again at Gamescom
Courtesy of Germany’s GamesweltTV, we have an extended interview with Takashi Iizuka, Sonic Team head and the lead on the upcoming Sonic Generations.
While the questions are in English, the answers are in Japanese, so what will likely be of more interest to you is the footage cut in between Iizuka’s remarks, many of which show new areas of Chemical Plant Zone. We get to see the very end of the classic stage, and the beginning of the modern stage for the first time. If you wish to skip directly to the latter, that begins at the 3:02 mark.
Take a look below. Thanks to Brazilian Hedgehog and Woun for the tip and upload. If you have news to share, be sure to share it with us by clicking Send News Tips at the top of every page.

cool somemore gameplay!!XD
So Takashi Iizuka understands english and chooses not to speak it
plus the guy playing at 3:02 sucks ass
@JimSweeny I’m pretty sure the translations were edited out. As far as I remember it was translated both ways at SOS.
Red ring at 3:40!
Aww, I was hoping those 2 other tubes next to Modern Sonic at the beginning were alternate paths.
Not sure how good my german is but…
at 2:27 i swear he says you’ll be able to play as tails, knuckles and shadow in some missions and mini-games.
So far Modern CP looks pretty barren. Not impressed at all Sonic Team.
I’d like a translation please. This interviewer, unlike any other so far, asked some pretty decent questions
Translations please?
@Jeffery I think they are alternate paths. @3:14 there’s a red air ring located at the top and I don’t think that you can make it to that ring by simply jumping. But idk
@sjmaster: We haven’t seen the whole level, you realize.
Chemical plant looks pretty damn good
I wonder if Sonic actually have a neck or it”s just the statue
@Amuro I know that, I’m expressing my current opinion. The stage could end up being awesome, but for now I’m not very excited about either version of CP>
JimSweeney
Maybe he understand english but cannot really speak it.
Big babys -.-
Takashi’s response to the first question is: You pointed out that the Sonic series is 20 years old, and therefore there are several generations of fans. There are those like you, play as Sonic for 20 years, but newer fans who have come to know about Sonic through cartoons. We want to implement the best aspects of Sonic fans to meet these different needs. We therefore try to establish a link between the Sonic gameplay mechanics from the first over the sidescrolling Sonic-phase up to the modern game mechanics.
his second response: This title is intended to represent the whole history of Sonic, so it’s not important to us infuse old, or new ideas. We want to combine the classical and the modern game mechanics to take a journey through the Sonic series.
his third response, this one is a little off because it was kinda hard, sorry. : Only classic and modern Sonic will be playable, because it concerns us about the history of the Sonic series but we do try to let express many of the charming and unique characters from the past 20 years that appear in the Sonic series, such as Tails, Knuckles or Shadow. In some missions you can play mini games with these friends of Sonic.
his fourth response: With the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 there will be only the single player mode. In the 3DS version, which is being developed simultaneously, there is a two-player mode that works over an Internet connection.
his fifth: Unfortunately not, Sonic Generations is only for Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and Nintendo 3DS.
his sixth: Of course, I play a lot because of professional reasons, I must be on the go, do what other developers. Since I have kids, I usually play songs that are suitable for children, such as Mario, Mario & Sonic, Pokemon and Wii Sports. So games that you play as a family.
his seventh: Sonic Generations will be released this November for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. The release date for the 3DS version is not yet known.
Whoa…back up to the 3rd response there: In some missions you can play mini games with these friends of Sonic.
That’s cool.
Is like to hear “Pingu” or something.
Regarding whether or not he has a translator: He might not actually need one. I remember when that Ono guy who’s been working on Street Fighter X Tekken was taking questions from the audience, I watched it live. He didn’t need his translator to understand what they were saying; the translator was there only to translate his answers into English.
He said that it’s because they learn English in schools since the age of 6, so most Japanese can understand English just fine. However, they’re not taught quite as much on how to speak or write it, hence hearing questions in English and answering in Japanese.
If Iizuka is anything like Ono in terms of his childhood education, then he might have actually understood English too–especially considering that he’s a production head and thus needs to meet with foreigners often.
P.S. The Street Fighter X Tekken was at Comic-Con; I watched the streaming interview (where he also took questions in English from the streaming site).
Apparently, he confirmed Amy and Shadow in this interview.
To the 3rd response: I hope Iizuka MEANT WHAT HE MEANT. HE said mini-games in missions, and you can play as Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, etc.
Sweet! idk why, but i have the strangest feeling Sonic U will have other playables, but seriously, if the next Mainstream Sonic doesnt have other playables (OTHER THAN SONIC 4, Ep.2) I will be so dissapointed in Iizuka that he is still listening to the classic fans, or fans that dont like other playables. As long as Tails, or Knuckles, etc. play similar to Sonic, then we should ALL BE HAPPY. Nuff said.
@KnucklesChaotix – Since when did he confirm Amy? xD
3:15 Theres a red ring off to the left so im pretty sure theres plenty of alternate paths.
@Jeremy: Thank you!

Huzzah! Thank god for being wrong!
@JefferyC what’s that picture suppose to mean?
Haha, I knew those other executives were lying about only sonic being playable. Demos never lie!! Cant wait to play as/against Knuckles again. Thank you Iizuka
I’m CERTAIN he mentioned shadow at 2:18 and said he’s somewhat playable a few seconds later.
DDDD THAT MEANS ADVENTURE-STYLE GAMEPLAY BUT WITH PWNAGE CHAOS POWERS!
@Renzy: I think it’s to show that there are alternate paths in Modern Sonic’s stages.
@Bob
No it does not!
@Bob: No.
@Bob, @Nuzamaki. @Knuckles
Nope nope nope. He never says any of that.
Thank God
@Bob
DOES THAT ALSO MEAN GUNS!!!?, OMG Game of the year
I don’t know about you, but I like the way modern Chemical Plant looks, it looks…chemical. XD That background, with the smog and machinery is awesome! If we got to play as anybody else, I’d like to be able to play as Tails and Knuckles like in S3&K, per say.
Really looking forward to this game. 8D

The more and more I look at new Chemical Plant, the more it reminds me of the dreaded Crimson carnival (a.k.a EggmanLand) from Unleashed.
But the new gameplay footage is very good.
The frame rate seems to be drastically dropping in certain points in the beginning of Modern CP!!?? hopefully its the video..but it seems to only be in certain spots..If they pull what they tried pull in “Sonic Unleashed” (Eggmanland with a framerate so low it was basically a slideshow at times) i will have a fit.. i think the only thing im worried about this game is framerate hahaha… ever since Sonic 06.. Sonic Team hasn’t been too good with it.. (Colors being the exception).fingers crossed cuz this game looks amazing..
