Coming This Holiday
With PAX just around the corner, SEGA have released the debut trailer for the Sonic CD re-release. Coming to Xbox Live, Playstation Network and iOS (among other platforms) “this holiday” according to the trailer.
Check out the video here. We’ll update with a YouTube link when one becomes available.
We also have a press release for you directly from SEGA:
SEGA® of America, Inc. and SEGA® Europe Ltd. today announced that Sonic CD™ will debut on mobile phones and consoles everywhere. The game was originally released for the SEGA CD™ system in 1993, and included the first appearance of fan favorite characters Metal Sonic and Amy Rose. Sonic CD is coming to digital platforms with music from the original Japanese soundtrack. The beloved prequel to Sonic The Hedgehog 4™ Episode I is coming to Xbox LIVE® Arcade for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PlayStation®Network, iPhone® and iPod® touch, iPad™, Windows PC Digital Download, Android and Windows Phone and will be available for download in late 2011.
“Ask any Sonic fan to name their favorite games, and Sonic CD always ranks near the top of their lists,” said Haruki Satomi, Vice President of Digital Business at SEGA of America. “Sonic CD marks an important chapter in Sonic’s history, bridging the gap between his oldest adventures and his new digital exploits like Sonic The Hedgehog 4 Episode I. We’ve made sure the re-mastered edition has everything that Sonic fans want to see with all of the original colorful classic zones.”
Following the classic story of the original, Sonic CD sees Dr Eggman plan to cause chaos and take control of the future by stealing Time Stones from the Little Planet. Sonic must speed through levels and travel through time while fending off Eggman’s robots to recover the Time Stones, and save Amy Rose from his mechanical twin, Metal Sonic! This fast-paced game will return with brand new features including enhanced widescreen graphics, special iOS features, Xbox LIVE Achievements, PSN Trophies, PC Achievements and more.
The re-release of Sonic CD will be making its public debut at the Microsoft booth at PAX Prime in Seattle, August 26–28, 2011. For more information on Sonic CD, please visit http://www.sega.com/
You can also find more information on SEGA’s blog, which discusses Sonic CD in slightly more depth.
Incidentally, it will be interesting to see what information we get about Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II. It seems that connections are already being made between it and Sonic CD, especially considering the appearance of Metal Sonic in the trailer.
Edit: YouTube trailer is up!

I’m actually quite looking forward to owning this on PS3. I loved it when I first played it on GameCube and I’m sure I will this time too.
That’s interesting that they’re suddenly calling it a “prequel” to Ep1…
It’s amazing to see this is coming to so many platforms! I am looking forward to playing it on my iPod Touch, PC, and probably my 360 too. There is a distinct lack of Nintendo platforms though. I can’t help but feel that it should be released for the Wii and Nintendo eShop/DSiWare too. (Probably eShop because the game resolution for DSiWare games may not be high enough)
I guess this is Taxman’s Retro engine then.
@Blippa: Agreed. This is interesting indeed.
Anyway, I can’t wait for this game to be re-released! I am already dying to play it.
Again no Nintendo plattform AT ALL? Waht´s wrong? They deliver it to every single Shitstation out there but not Nintendo? Yeah right because Sonic Games allways fail on Nintendo consoles like Sonic Rush and Sonic Colors….oh WAIT! Stupid Idiots!
Grr, stupid me not having Flash Player 10….
SO glad that Sonic CD is getting more love this year. As well as Metal Sonic, the second most awesome villain in the Sonic universe behind Robotnik/Eggman.
Can’t wait to get it from the Playstation Network. I just hope that they’ll include the option of changing the game’s soundtracks from JP/EU to US.
YouTube mirror is up folks.
Awesome!! It seems to be a nice port!!
Widescreen!!
The only thing I could miss is not being able to choose US soundtrack, but oh well… If that´s the price for a perfect port in all the other things, I´m glad of it
It will be nice to see the connection between Sonic CD and Sonic 4 Episode 2 (maybe Episode 2 was delayed because this was coming?). Will Generations and this have a connection too? Time Eater, time traveling etc… Maybe CD, Generations and Sonic 4 Episode 2 will be related…
wait… am I reading that there will be no US soundtrack????
BETTER NOT BE TRUE.
Anyway… yay!
“How it all started”?
I thought Sonic 1 started it all? o.O
unless that’s a clue…
Kinda weird that they used the Sonic 4 style for this trailer. It’s not bad it’s just….why? But FINALLY Sonic CD comes to PSN! Finally i get a chance to play it.
Some details have emerged in Sonic Retro. The port is done with the Retro Engine from Taxman. Real widescreen. There´s a choice for S2-3K or SCD rolling and physics. The musics do loop unlike in the original. This will be absolutely and completely awesome!!! Day one buy, at 800 or 1200 points!!!
The version played by Endri seems to be a previous port from another developer, so it will be 60fps
This game will be in my library on Xbox LIVE on the first day no questions asked.
its gonna be on ps3. Fk yes!!! I was waiting for this to be ported. hopefully we get a great port with no lag, or sound issues.
I have an android phone also XD. yes!!! I don’t have to buy the gems collection!
Do not know their reason for not making this for WiiWare or Virtual Console on the Wii especially since many people have bought older Sonic games as well as Sonic 4 from these services. But still good news to see this amazing lost gem show itself.
@ AM: I think the game is too big for WiiWare.
JP soundtrack across the board. What a pleasant surprise. But I love how the press release keeps plugging Sonic 4 when in reality, even non-Sonic fans will play both games back-to-back and realize SCD is clearly the better game lol
So, is every new Sonic 2D trailer going to go by the Sonic 4 “ZOMG DIS IZ SO EPIX” format? From the first two seconds, I thought it was a teaser for Sonic 4 Ep. II.
Also, I believe Sonic CD took place after Sonic 1, which is where it all started.
@Jonathan Charles
Yeah you are right the WiiWare limit is 40 MB and the game with all the music is more then 100 MBs. This is a serious problem for Nintendo, maybe they should fix it on the Wii U.
@Amuro
I don´t think so. The Episode 2 story will probably be related to the Sonic CD one, and they maybe want to get younger people who liked Sonic 4 hyped.
That, and maybe Episode 2 will be done with the same engine that this Sonic CD remake. That would be totally awesome!!
@KMetalMind
This is not really a remake it is an enhanced port. From the trailer I can see they are using the original engine used in the 1993 game. I doubt they will reuse this engine for Sonic 4 episode II, but I do agree with in that if they did it would be awesome (of course if they used higher resolution sprites like the fan game Sonic 2 HD)
Actually I wonder why they did not just use a modified engine from the genesis/CD Sonic games (with higher resolution sprites) for Sonic 4 it would have looked a lot more classic, cartoony, and nostalgic if they did that.
@KMetalMind: I’m actually kinda against that. Sonic’s physics in CD were wonky. Not as bad as in 4, but still wonky nonetheless.
@Amuro
You know, there´s already an option in this port for S2/S3K physics or Sonic CD physics!
@AM
If what I´ve read is true, this is the Retro Engine, an entire new engine. That´s why you can put in widescreen or S2/S3K physics. So yeah, it could be used for later games, although I don´t know the specifics of the engine (maybe I´m wrong).
…”prequel to Sonic 4 Ep. 1?”
But what about my beloved S3&K!?
@KMetalMind: Seriously? Holy shit… That’s AWESOME!!!
I literally got Gems Collection a week before this was announced, so I don’t know what to think. I’m just glad I got to play this classic.
What an odd trailer. Referencing Sonic 4 and using a phrase like “see how it all started”… I’m HOPING that’s a tie-in to Generations and not some half-baked attempt at generating more hype for S4:ep2. Either way, it’s a pretty unusual tagline…
The details (if true) coming out of Retro are making this to sound like a worthy re-release indeed. Bravo, Sega?
@dude
Wiiware sucks, I’m sorry to say. They have a ridiculously small file size limit on DLC. Honestly, the music files alone are probably too big for it… they had to compress the tracks for Sonic 4 (among other things) to make it fit, and those weren’t even redbook.
Wow, that trailer was just the first level… Are they doing it like they did Sonic 4 episode 1 where they reveal one level at a time with each trailer? Because we already know what the levels are in this game. When the trailer started, I was hoping it was going to be Sonic 4 episode 2. Anyway, why no wii? Oh well, not like I would buy it on Wii anyway, already have it on Gems collection.
The file size for CD is bigger than Ocarina of Time for the 64…?
@dude The only reason SEGA’s not porting Sonic CD on the Wii is due to the Wii U. Nintendo’s moving on and that’s mostly why there’s small to little inactivity on the Wii Shop.
@Sonictoast
For a well-known classic game is it really NECESSARY to show off all the levels? We already know what’s there.
@PreStalnic
There’s ALWAYS been small to little activity on the Wiishop. That thing’s been a near wasteland since time began XD
@Stephan
More than 3x bigger, actually. OoT’s only about 25 MB, but SCD’s almost 90, BEFORE any of the additions/improvements they’re supposedly adding.
@ChaoticFox
I don’t think Wii Shop is THAT awful when it comes to virtual console.
@ stephan
You have no idea how many storage hurtles Nintendo had to go through because of their hardware. The fact that Ocarina of Time even fit on the N64 cartridge was amazing. However, Nintendo seems to be learning, the 3DS no longer relies on internal memory to launch games (the Wii does have SD card support but games on the SD card need to be temporarily be copied on the system’s internal storage), hence there is no need for a file limitation now (okay a game cannot be larger then 32 GB because that is the limit for the 3DS’s SDHC card standard, but no one is making games that big). If Sega does a port of this on the 3DS (without the use of 3D, because 3D effects are not needed in a side scroller in anyway) then it should work out and it will take little time to port.
If anyone can youtube this and post a link, that’d be cool.
@Stephan
I agree. The virtual console is a very cool service. WiiWare (despite some very good titles) has not been. They have to fix their online exclusives service for the Wii U, and that is a must.
Virtual Console is cool beans. WiiWare kinda sucks, though…
They’re both cool in concept, but there’s rarely a lot of worthwhile content added to either service. VC moreso than Wiiware, if you’re into that sort of thing, but even then…
Awesome.
That link worked. Cool that me AND my GF can get it, she’s got windows phone.
I’m still wishing for Donkey Kong 64… XD
Wait, so now it’s been confirmed that CD takes place between Sonic 1-3&K and Sonic 4?
huh…kind of interesting to see them start off the trailer Sonic 4 style…will this mean something in the future? ….nahhhhhhh…lol
I guess that makes sense. Does that mean they’ll show a bit more of the story to show how it links up with Sonic the Hedgehog 4?
And. . .
Holy CRAP! SONIC CD!
It so deserves the love it’s getting this year. Did you know originally, Yuji Naka wanted to have the scenery morph instantly around you AS you went forward or backward in time? They couldn’t program it correctly (remember, this is 1993) so they had to settle for a shifting colorful screen as Sonic spun around and flew into the past or future.
1. Why the hell did they bastardize the trailer with the Sonic 4 crap?
2. Sonic CD is a prequel to S4E1? I thought Sonic 4 took place DIRECTLY after Sonic 4: Epi. 1? And isn’t Sonic 1 “how it all started?” (Unless they’re referring to Metal Sonic as a cheap tie-in to Sonic 4 Epi. 2) I guess Sonic Team doesn’t give a crap about continuity.
3. Why only feature the EU/JP soundtrack? Give the player an option to play the game with either the US or EU/JP soundtrack.
Other than those three issues I have with the trailer/news, this is pretty great, especially the new features that come with it.
Oops, in #2 I meant to say “I thought Sonic 4 took place DIRECTLY after Sonic 3&K?”
@Ananze:
1) It won’t affect the actual game, so quit whining.
2) You’re just now realizing that Sega doesn’t give a shit about continuity?
3) I agree.
So then that would explain the . . . *spoiler* . . . at the end of Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 . . .
@Amuro You do realize you’re on the internet, right? Let alone a Sonic website.
@Ananze: You’re complaining about the graphic design of a teaser trailer. A. FUCKING. TEASER. TRAILER.
I’m sorry, but that is pathetic.
Let it go, Amuro. Calm down XD
