Discusses Sonic CD, 4 Relationship
Following on from the post Ken Balough made to clarify some details about Sonic CD and it’s placement in the timeline, a fan video has surfaced on YouTube that discusses the Sonic the Hedgehog timeline in more depth as well as the role of Metal Sonic. Interestingly between Sonic Generations, Sonic CD and Sonic the Hedgehog 4 SEGA seem to be pushing time travel as a big theme (Sonic goes back in time in Generations).
Check out the video below, or over at YouTube. Be sure to stay tuned for any more SEGA or Sonic news from PAX this weekend.

God, you people can’t go one comment thread without a massive argument and even bigger egos. Cut it out. It’s disgusting.
@Bob The Goldfish
You sure Treasure wouldn’t be a nice fit for Sonic handhelds?
@X
Thank you.
Jesus, this article has degenerated into a playground bitch-fest faster than any I’ve ever seen before. What is wrong with you kids?
@Greg
I didn’t watch the video, but the way I understand the issue, the retro engine just isn’t compatible with what’s already been established for Sonic 4. I’m sure if the game were 16-bit, they would be more likely to consider it. I don’t think it’s a matter of pride or ego, but a matter of time/cost-effectiveness. I could be wrong, but I think there are other factors preventing them from using the engine beyond “nah, we just wanna troll people like Greg”
@X (again)
The problem comes from generalizing. The whole “eating Sega’s shit” thing may not apply to every modern fan, but it does apply to many (you can see evidence by some of the comments here). Not every retro fan believes every modern fan to be scum, and vice versa.
That goes for a lot of other things, like the notion that the only thing retro fans want is another 16-bit sidescroller with perfect physics. Not all of us are saying “give us more of the same”. Most of the time, we’re just asking for a bit of polish and attention to detail on some of the newer stuff (physics, rolling). More often than not, it just seems like the retro fans are asking for a higher standard of quality, not a rigid set of arbitrary requirements that must strictly adhered to.
@ChaoticFox
Of course. I could never argue with a higher set of standards. Who could? It just seems most of what I see in regards to physics arguments boils down to “go back and just copy the code”. Maybe I’m just gleaning the wrong information.
@ greg:
Sure I don’t agree with all of your opinions about everything but not even you have to put up with the rudeness of these people. Just ignore them. Don’t feed the trolls.
If they can speak their opinion, so can you. Just don’t say in a way that tells them that makes your comments seem to say “Your opinion sucks, mine is better” since you have been doing that a lot lately from what I read in the past articles.
I’m just trying to pick a fight with you, I’m only saying in a honest way.
@X
People suggest that because the old code was relatively flawless (in terms of physics functions, not every aspect of programming). We offer it only as a solution to a company we see struggling to get the fundamentals of their primary franchise right. It’s not that we don’t want anything new, but we could use a solid foundation like that to build off of, rather than something sloppy and awful, like what we saw in S4.
@Amuro I completely agree with you, I fucking loved Unleashed! Its one of my favorite sonic games of all time. I’m still playing it to this day. Gotta practice for Sonic Generations :3
Not saying anything about the arguments but Stephen reminds me of an actual “Steven” i used to know in high school who acted the same way.
Creepy.
If you are going to connect it to Sonic CD at least have a CD quality Soundtrack not the shitty excuse for a soundtrack in Sonic 4, even Sonic 3&K soundtrack had more instruments and sounded alot more better.
@Haru
He threw tantrums like me? lol
So if Sega is using the Retro Engine, would it be possible to get a combined S3&K with original menus, 60FPS and widescreen via digital distribution?
and not by Backbone and having actually challenging hard to get achievements?
Please SEGA do it Ill buy it even if its 1200 Points!
Could sonic cd be released n hd?
I remember sonic as far back as when i had the Saturn as a little kid. After playing Sonic 3/ sonic and knuckles (with 3d Blast being my first) i became attached to them, and grew up watching the old cartoon, and playing the series and collecting them.
As for Metal Sonic, i never got to play Sonic Cd until the collection series came out. But as for his appearances, he made a cameo in Adventure, was a 2 player battle character in SA2: Battle (along with Chaos and Tikal on a one time only since then), and was the “surprise” main antagonist of Sonic Heroes, having turned on eggman and locked him up.Yet, he vanishes till now in generations and Sonic 4 (but nothing more as past tense events/revisited events), but was also Sonic’s rival as Hyper Metal Sonic in Sonic the movie but fell into lava.(but there really no say in Sonic the movie having any canon).
As for gaming development…not every title in a franchise is going to be perfect. And only some titles can stick with the same formula. Sometimes its all about eperimentation: see what can work, improve on what doesnt. Same as any artform (being an art school student and a game designer by spare-time hobby, i’d understand that.)If its fail and miss, scrap itand try sommething else.
i smell a rat…. a rat named Aaron Webber.
Sonic Generations is suppose to please All sonic fans then why the fuck are they talking about Sonic 4 and Sonic CD with Sonic Generations?
I smell… ignorance… and it stems from the posts made by Manic the Hedgehog.
@Manic the Hedgehog
Ignorant troll is Ignorant.
Y’know, all this wangst over Sonic 4, CD and the fan input is making me hate the Genesis games.
So when he says the CD spindash he means the figure 8 thing right? Cause i used to love that
It isn’t such a bad thing tat they are basically using CD to tie in Sonic 4. They at least a trying to give it a placeholder in the timeline. Some people went along with it being before Sonic 2 (since it was in progress of development during Sonic 2). I also have high hopes for Generations.It looks very promising. Only 2 months, then we will finally see the final product.
Thumbs up to SEGA!
