Discusses Sonic CD, 4 Relationship
Following on from the post Ken Balough made to clarify some details about Sonic CD and it’s placement in the timeline, a fan video has surfaced on YouTube that discusses the Sonic the Hedgehog timeline in more depth as well as the role of Metal Sonic. Interestingly between Sonic Generations, Sonic CD and Sonic the Hedgehog 4 SEGA seem to be pushing time travel as a big theme (Sonic goes back in time in Generations).
Check out the video below, or over at YouTube. Be sure to stay tuned for any more SEGA or Sonic news from PAX this weekend.

In fact, maybe Sonic CD, Sonic 4 Episode 2 and Sonic Generations stories could be related… Maybe the Time Eater or Robotnik has gotten the Time Stones while everybody forgot them.
I actually find that this makes Sonic 4 a lot more interesting and fitting, and I am especially curious to see what type of levels and events occur in future episodes. o.o
Sonic 4 ep 1 happens after all the classic games(including CD) and that’s it.There’s no need to give a spot in the timeline to every single game as long as they are coherent.
*Plays “Back in Time” from Sonic R over the speakers*
I apologize for sounding rude, but it seems that you are completely ignoring the portion where Patrick Riley said that they weren’t using the Retro Engine for Sonic 4. Just saying.
“As you truly imagined it.”
This has become an internet meme.
You people seem not to understand that Sonic 4 is not compatible with the retro engine.
@Krazeekid102- Who cares if they don’t use Retro Engine. If they did, then Ep1 wouldn’t be compatible towards 2. Let’s just be happy the physics will be tweaked for Ep2, and that we will get completely new stages with stuff we’ve haven’t seen before.
Btw, I’m hoping that Ep. 2 will have 12 stages. If not 12, then 7, no less, SEGA.
@KMetalMind – Generations cannot be related to Episode 2, because then we would have to bring back Classic Sonic, which they obiously won’t.
japanese soundtrack FTW
fuck sonic boom
@SonicFan15
Shut up, fucker.
Yeah fuck Sonic Boom
Why the fuck are y’all even mentioning this in this atlrticle? Just trying to be jackasses?
Sonic CD is the best. I also like sonic 4 even though u say its sucks & short.
I want game with quality. (aka sonic cd class port and sonic generations)
I don’t have any problem with sega putting sonic 4 in timeline.
The quality of game independent of time line. Sonic 4 is a terrible game and Sonic CD is awesome game.
I’m not fucking Sonic Boom. Jesus, it’s like the haters jump at every possible chance to kill the buzz.
^^This.^^
Yes…because nobody EVER considered Sonic CD to be before Sonic 2, Ken. *sigh*
1:15 So then why the fuck would you associate a MUCH OLDER GAME to a newer game? I mean really…
>release a game that was great to many, mediocre to some, shit to others
>”Oh hey there’s that one game people like but it doesn’t belong anywhere canonically yet”
>”LET’S USE THAT TO MARKET OUR POLARIZING GAME”
>???
>Profit
I don’t understand the mentality that went into SEGA with this. I’m trying really really REALLY hard to stay positive too as we all said “Great, so Episode 2 is just going to be based on Sonic CD cuz Metal’s in it thanks to the true ending in Episode 1″ and Ken and others debunked that due to it having all “new content”, but here they are, RIGHT HERE IN VIDEO FORM saying Sonic CD is linked with Sonic 4.
I don’t know how I feel about CD being related to Sonic 4…it’s like the reputation of CD just went down a few notches because of THAT FACT ALONE.
4:21 “We’re not saying it comes directly before Sonic 4″
…..yeah……………except that’s EXACTLY WHAT YOU ARE saying, as officially stated in the press release about Sonic CD. >:|
5:10 C’mon, just admit he made an engine that works tons better for 2D Sonic than the “ehhhhhhhhhh….” that is Episode 1. Just ADMIT IT.
6:51 I thought him ‘coming back’ in any of those games was just fanservice…don’t be dividing the lines any more than they need to be, Ken. :\
8:30 What exactly is there to develop SEGA? You have an engine, you have the improvements in this port….it’s not like you guys are MAKING THE GAME from the ground up: the game is already made, shit.
9:50 Anti-aliasing on old 16-bit games? I hate those things. They just make the older games look ugly. Give me the original pixelated glory, thank you.
10:35 “Flagship digital title”.
….aye. That hurt to hear for some reason.
12:40 More surprises huh? Better make it worthwhile.
@Ricardo: But the Retro Engine is practically a 1:1 perfect recreation of the Genesis code. Why the hell should they NOT use it? All I’m seeing are more excuses for why their games are so poorly programmed. A certain team’s ego won’t let them use code that isn’t theirs to make a proper Sonic game. And honestly if you’re alright with that, then you have low standards and are the last person that they need to be taking advice from.
@Greg
SHUT THE FUCK UP!!!
@Greg
Get the hell out of here, Greg. Screw you.
Hey, I know you’re mad. I’m sorry if I know what I’m fucking talking about. Apparently, Sega doesn’t need a PR Team. The fans will come up with the excuses for them and defend them like they’re the Holy Qur’an.
@Asshole Greg
No they won’t! Just because they’re alright with the engine not being used in the next episode doesn’t mean they don’t want the physics fixed. You’re just some asshole who likes to think that everything you say is correct! You think that 80% of the people on this site have low standards and are way to pleadable just because of rolling physics! GET THE FUCK OUT OF HERE, ANDRE!!!
@Stephan: Oops, it seems I struck a nerve. You’re emotionally unstable, Captain. You can relinquish the U.S.S. Enterprise over to a more stable mind now.
Greg, mind toning your ego down a few notches?
@Amuro: Only if people will be level headed with me. Thanks for asking politely though!
@Greg
Just fuck off…
It’s a good thing to play this game without buying a sega cd. I just hope it’s original and nothing change much.
The funny segment is when Ken is saying that Metal Sonic hasn’t being used much only now in Generations and Mario and Sonic and isn’t really used that much in the main storyline . Then the guy interview ing him says Sonic Heroes, and Ken tries to cover his a** by saying that Metal is there but we really don’t know alot about his coming back.. that made me laugh for three minutes. Is it that hard to imagine that Eggman wanted to use one of his most trusted robots in another scheme. Plus the Heroes itself explains Metal Sonics actions throughout the cut scene and Eggman fills in the rest of the blanks in the Final story.
Sega how about you guys get together again and make a better excuse for this mishap.
@Greg – Screw you. I have my own opinion, and I’m entitled to it.
@Stephan- Thank you!
I swear someone needs to beat that guy senseless.
Sound the alarm and break out the fire extinguishers.
You guy’s are Fighting about Video Games…….
I will agree with Greg that Sega does need to improve on the games, 06 has no Physics whatsoever, Black Night was only 2 hours long,and Unleash was bland, and repetitive. I know that it is a matter of Opinion, but it’s still the standards of a Quality game. Not how Sonic looks,but how good the game is overall, Sure a game could be fun for the first 5 minutes, or after you beat it, but do yo go back to play it again? But I will agree that your Ego is a bit big, and I’m the new guy here.
But you can’t Criticize Sonic. Sonic is perfect in every way possible, you’re not a true sonic fan if you don’t love every aspect of sonic, and if you don’t like all of the new game’s you’re Retro Fag, and are not a Sonic a fan at all. T_T ………
@Sideshowshayne: Your comment was really good until it hit this point:
“But you can’t Criticize Sonic. Sonic is perfect in every way possible, you’re not a true sonic fan if you don’t love every aspect of sonic, and if you don’t like all of the new game’s you’re Retro Fag, and are not a Sonic a fan at all. T_T ………”
That’s basically asking me to not demand better developed games. And that’s just ignorant. Oh well? T’is the bliss of ignorance.
Just because I don’t like EVERY SINGLE game made doesn’t not make me a fan. Remember this and don’t tell me I am what I’m not. In only lessens your arguments.
I was being Sarcastic XD Yeah like there’s nothing wrong with Sonic at all. I’m sure Sonic not a dying Mascot who has been plagued with awful Story, and Games. XD
@Sideshowshayne: My mistake. Sly fox, yes.
I’m gonna disagree with Sideshow when he said that Unleashed was bland. I personally loved Unleashed, Werehog levels and all, and if it weren’t for Unleashed, we wouldn’t have Colors, and ultimately Generations. I’m not going to say that the game was perfect, as it did have it’s flaws, but I think Unleashed is one of the most underrated titles in the series. And I know that practically no one will agree with me when I make that statement, but I don’t really care.
I don’t care if Generations’s Classic Sonic physics aren’t 100% like Greg wants them to be, but if they’re as close as possible, and it’s still fun to play, then that’s all I care about. The Advance and Rush games didn’t have Classic Sonic physics, and those games were great to play. Generations is gonna be awesome, I just know it.
@Greg I’m with you here. Dimps can go die in a hole. The only games Dimps made that I liked were Advance 1 and 3, with 2 being meh. Other than that, I really don’t like their games, Sonnic Team should lso make the Handhelds IMO.
I loved Unleashed too. I played Unleashed for a straight up year after it was released, and I rarely go back and play any game after I’ve beaten it.
One thing I’ve always hated about the “retro” argument, as it were, was this fabricated notion that people that like the modern games are just eating Sega’s shit and are afraid to criticize. But that is just silly and childish. Lacking empathy is a sure sign of immaturity. I couldn’t stand anything from Heroes through 06, but just because I liked Unleashed and didn’t mind the physics in Sonic 4, I am weak-willed fan blind to quality? It never seems to dawn on Retro fans that what they prefer is only one option, and not necessarily the right one. They neglect the possibility that a game with the same rigid requirements carried through 20 years would be incredibly stale, and would likely have resulted in the franchise being completely dead at this point. I may not like many of the choices Sonic Team and Dimps have made over the years, but this grass-is-greener imaginary world where Sonic’s games have stayed the same for two decades paints a much different picture in my mind. In that world I can easily see Sonic being in Megaman’s shoes.
@Ricardo, Stephan, Dead Skin
I don’t like most of Greg’s posts either, but you guys aren’t making a very good case for yourselves right now. Slinging names around and telling someone to shutup just makes you look ridiculous.
@X
Seriously, throwing enemies off of skyscrapers? LOL. xD
I liked almost all of the modern games except ’06 and Secret Rings. (’06 was boring, and in my case for Secret Rings, it was hard to control).
@Amuro
I’m with you on the Werehog stuff. It was pretty fun, in my opinion.
It seemed like SEGA always had an interest in time-travel.
From what I get from this is that they want to use Sonic CD and Episode 2 to explain what happened to Metal Sonic after Sonic CD. As a132 said Sonic Heroes featured Metal and explain why he was there via cut scenes. Also, in Sonic Adventure during Amy’s story you see a quick cut scene of Sonic saving Amy from Metal who is chasing her. This scene was a reference to Sonic CD. Even on the Eggcarrier you can Find Metal Sonic (or what is left of him) in one of the capsules. Wouldn’t this mean that after Sonic rescued Amy and destroyed Metal Sonic in Sonic CD, Robotnik/Eggman gathered his remains placing them in the Eggcarrier’s capsules. It could even be said that Robotnik/Eggman was reconstructing Metal way back then as a back up in case Chaos failed. This back up led to the story shown in Sonic Heroes. Or something along these lines. In any case, Metal Sonic has shown up quite often in the Sonic series (even is not via a boss battle).
God, you people can’t go one comment thread without a massive argument and even bigger egos. Cut it out. It’s disgusting.
@Bob The Goldfish
You sure Treasure wouldn’t be a nice fit for Sonic handhelds?
@X
Thank you.
Jesus, this article has degenerated into a playground bitch-fest faster than any I’ve ever seen before. What is wrong with you kids?
@Greg
I didn’t watch the video, but the way I understand the issue, the retro engine just isn’t compatible with what’s already been established for Sonic 4. I’m sure if the game were 16-bit, they would be more likely to consider it. I don’t think it’s a matter of pride or ego, but a matter of time/cost-effectiveness. I could be wrong, but I think there are other factors preventing them from using the engine beyond “nah, we just wanna troll people like Greg”
@X (again)
The problem comes from generalizing. The whole “eating Sega’s shit” thing may not apply to every modern fan, but it does apply to many (you can see evidence by some of the comments here). Not every retro fan believes every modern fan to be scum, and vice versa.
That goes for a lot of other things, like the notion that the only thing retro fans want is another 16-bit sidescroller with perfect physics. Not all of us are saying “give us more of the same”. Most of the time, we’re just asking for a bit of polish and attention to detail on some of the newer stuff (physics, rolling). More often than not, it just seems like the retro fans are asking for a higher standard of quality, not a rigid set of arbitrary requirements that must strictly adhered to.
@ChaoticFox
Of course. I could never argue with a higher set of standards. Who could? It just seems most of what I see in regards to physics arguments boils down to “go back and just copy the code”. Maybe I’m just gleaning the wrong information.
@ greg:
Sure I don’t agree with all of your opinions about everything but not even you have to put up with the rudeness of these people. Just ignore them. Don’t feed the trolls.
If they can speak their opinion, so can you. Just don’t say in a way that tells them that makes your comments seem to say “Your opinion sucks, mine is better” since you have been doing that a lot lately from what I read in the past articles.
I’m just trying to pick a fight with you, I’m only saying in a honest way.
@X
People suggest that because the old code was relatively flawless (in terms of physics functions, not every aspect of programming). We offer it only as a solution to a company we see struggling to get the fundamentals of their primary franchise right. It’s not that we don’t want anything new, but we could use a solid foundation like that to build off of, rather than something sloppy and awful, like what we saw in S4.
@Amuro I completely agree with you, I fucking loved Unleashed! Its one of my favorite sonic games of all time. I’m still playing it to this day. Gotta practice for Sonic Generations :3
Not saying anything about the arguments but Stephen reminds me of an actual “Steven” i used to know in high school who acted the same way.
Creepy.
If you are going to connect it to Sonic CD at least have a CD quality Soundtrack not the shitty excuse for a soundtrack in Sonic 4, even Sonic 3&K soundtrack had more instruments and sounded alot more better.
@Haru
He threw tantrums like me? lol
