Succumbs to Stomach Cancer
We have sad news to begin the week. The Anime News Network reports Junpei Takiguchi, a well known voice artist and narrator for animated series in Japan, passed away this morning after battling stomach cancer. He was 80 years old.
Takiguchi was known for roles in Yatterman in the late 1970s and Dragon Ball in the 1980s. But Sonic fans who watched the original Sonic the Hedgehog OVA released in 1996 will know him best as the voice artist for Eggman in the two episode series.
ANN reports funeral services for Takiguchi will be private.

I’ve only ever seen this in English, so I’m not too distraught. Still, respect to the departed..
It´s kinda sad that this happened in the year of 20th Anniversary of one of his (voice)roles. Afterall Eggman is been around for 20 years too, maybe it was a special treatment that he fought long enough so he would not miss the anniversary.
Really bad news, I enjoyed his voice a lot when watching the OAV… RIP buddy.
Just a little question however, it is written on a lot of websites including Sonic Retro that Eggman’s japanese voice was Junpei Janikuchi. Spelling error?
It’s either a spelling error or an alternate pronunciation. A lot of Japanese characters have more than one way to pronounce it, and more than one meaning as well.

I’ve remembered watching the OVA in Japanese once. I thought Junpei did a good job as Robotnik/Eggman’s voice.
