Will Appear at SAGE, End of Year Full Release Likely
It’s been a while since we learned about a promising fan game from community scener LakeFeperd. But on Friday, the SFG developer posted another long trailer from the coming game, meant to bridge the gap between Sonic 1 and 2.
The game is fairly far along–enough so that we’ll see a new build in a few weeks at SAGE 2011 with a few levels. We may also see the entire full game released before the end of the year, a rarity for fan projects. LakeFeperd puts the odds at 90 percent that Sonic Before the Sequel will be released during 2011.
Take a look at the new trailer below, containing plenty of gameplay footage. We’ll bring you more from this and other titles and their status for SAGE in the coming days, leading up to the big show in mid-September.

The levels look cool, but re-using CD cutscenes sprites? Isn’t that a little much?
Can’t wait for this. The demo was amazing.
THAT’S something we’re all gonna love.
Okay, NOW my interest in this game has increased.
I still don’t like that logo, though. Too much blue + no Sonic font for the “SONIC” = bad graphic design IMO.
Although, I have to wonder… even though this is a fangame, with the recent continuity mishaps, if CD really is the precursor to Sonic 2 (which makes sense now that I think about it), then where in the timeline would this game take place since it’s called “Before the Sequel”? lol
Wow, that’s a good quality fan game. Song of choice gave it a +1 in my book already. I’ll have to keep up with this one.
@Amuro Before the sequel.
@ShadowTG: Did you fully read my post? ‘Cuz I don’t think you did. If CD is the precursor to Sonic 2, then when did this game take place if it were in the official series?
@Amuro CD took place before Before The Sequel.
@Shadow TG: Facepalm…
Gorgeous, innovative, intriguing… this game is all of these. Do want.
The boss fights look really interesting and fresh, but what’s up with all those cheesy angry eyes? XD
@Amuro Anyway, CD’s place in the timeline still isn’t set in stone. I’d like to think it’s some way between 1 and 2 (Because of the underdeveloped spindash and how Eggman decided to build the Death Egg instead of taking control of a planet) but not be the only thing either before 2 or after 1.
Has my full backing vote for Awesuhm!!!….by the way…parallel world perhaps?
This fangame piqued my interest. I can’t wait for its release
I’ll get it only if Sonic and Tails can do Super Peel Out.
Now THIS is a fangame that I’ll enjoy.
Amazing fan game, just amazing. Sometimes I wish that Sega would hire some of these fan game developers, they have a clearer vision for Sonic then Iizuka ever did in his clearest day.
Aw darn it!!! I thought TSSZ would have created a new post about the Super Sonic Models in Sonic Generations, and the Official 20th Anniversary Super Sonic Figures already!!!! Well, I guess you could just press on my name, or just go to the Sonic Generations page on the Sonic Wiki, then go to the Sonic Generations/Gallery Page and look around…
@AM: Can I upvote comments here?
If I could, I’d upvote yours a thousand times.
I hate to say this for fear of the game being postponed, but I wish LakeFeperd would hire someone to animate the cutscenes, remix the level music, and reimagine the level art, so this could be a lot more original. Still, this game is awesome.
OH WOW, i want this. Dont hide them updates! I need to download this!
Music was terrible, as is most music associated with Sonic fangames.
Gameplay looks more “Hold right to win” than even standard Dimps fare. How is it that not a single Sonic fangame knows how to make platforming exciting?
Only real kudos I gotta give is the flavor of the levels, even though there’s an awful lot of BLUES GREYS and other neutral colors.
That is really impressive.
@Haru
Obvious troll is obvious.
ChaoticFox: Why are you calling me a troll?
Seriously, because I don’t share the same opinion as you guys and because I simply -must- be out just to be some sort of dickhead to type what I do to waste time?
No. My opinion is honest. SO SORRY you have to think I’m trolling but I’m not.
@ChaoticFox
You know how alot of the badniks have “angry eyes” I’m guessing that’s what he was going for???
Game looks very interesting…not digging the cutscenes. He can keep those :/
I love how the Knuckles Chaotix’s HUD is a fangame cliche, that and Sonic CD’s exclusive spring-up/drop down sprites lol. But joking aside this is much closer to “Sonic 4 as we imagined it” than anything Sega’s put out lately.
@Haru
Because your comment was so outrageously ignorant I figured it couldn’t possibly be serious. You are aware that a) the music used was just ONE song intended for use in the trailer and not reflective of the entire soundtrack and b) is OFFICIAL SONIC MUSIC and not some half-baked fan concoction, right?
I can’t believe you’re using the “hold right to win” argument after seeing a TRAILER that was obviously meant to show off those extended running sections because they lend a sense of speed and scale to it. It clearly wasn’t trying to sell the slower and less exciting platforming parts, which I’m willing to bet there’ll be more than plenty of in the actual game (there are traces and examples of creative level design all over the trailer)
You may have a point about the blues and greys thing, but it’s a pretty minor and insignificant nitpick.
Actually, I do think that this game has a strong “hold right to win” feel to it, if these snipets are anything to go by.Otherwise though, it looks very nice for a fan game. I noticed some reusing of resources, but I did see some original artwork too, and that’s what impresses me.
So many Sonic fan games seem content to just reuse graphics or give them palette swaps for the whole thing. If you can’t draw, you should get someone who can, because it looks a lot better if you make it look like nothing else yet seen in Sonic.
If it’s just used for the trailer, then it’s not a well-made trailer. I’d like to see a variety of things, not just blinding speed. For instance, there was one point in that cloud zone where Tails got hit by an obstacle. I’d like to see more of that, because I’d like to see how the difficulty of this game will be like.
If you can’t draw, you should get someone who can, because it looks a lot better if you make it look like nothing else yet seen in Sonic.
9x/10 this isn’t the case, and the artwork ends up looking extremely amateur and contrasting with the official sprites that DO get used. The unique “from-scratch” character sprites I see people using occasionally often look even worse, to a point where it makes the entire GAME look bad, regardless of how well-programmed it may be. Seeing creatively mixmatched tiles re-used from classic Sonic games is much more impressive to me than seeing original, but sub-par pixel work mucking up the game’s visuals.
Trailers are just supposed to make the game stand out and leave a good first impression, not showcase the entirety of the game’s content (from difficulty to storyline to music to level design, etc etc etc). I think people are just spoiled by the fact that Sega produces like 8 trailers per game now, and sites like TSSZ provide every little scrap of news related to them before their release.
This… kinda… reeks of MMF. There. I had to put it out, it was killing me D:
~Rehash~ is written all over the place. If this is what it takes to create a complete fangame though, I salute you, LakeFeperd. At least it’s much betetr than just another demo.
“Because your comment was so outrageously ignorant I figured it couldn’t possibly be serious. Who’s to say that my comment was ignorant? Because you don’t agree with it? Because my opinion is so vastly different and that I take a “No bullshit” approach that even with it being a fan game I obviously have to kiss its ass and give it a slightly less jarring opinion?
Okay so no, and yes I’m aware of the track regardless but that music is still terrible.

It’s a trailer showing off the game though. I’m going to call it as I see it. If an advertisement (in any way, shape, or form) does not sell me on something, then gee, I guess I don’t have a lot of good to say about it. I won’t, because it, as an advertisement (In this case, a fan game), failed to impress me or interest me.
“You may have a point about the blues and greys thing, but it’s a pretty minor and insignificant nitpick.”
Not at all. Visual appeal is half of the reason video games gain the interest initially. That’s how I see it anyways because of the word ‘video’ in “video game”. Gameplay is as important as visuals, and, especially for a Sonic game, the visuals here do not look that……well.lively.
But it’s okay ChaoticFox…continue to have issues with my posts on fangames. I’ll always have a response to your moaning.
Geez, why is it that the internet is never satisfied with anything?
Nice fangame, though. Certainly interesting.
