SCD Port the Priority, But SFG Not Officially Canceled
In news of the expected, the recent confirmation of Christian Whitehead’s involvement in the pending re-release of Sonic CD using his Retro Engine has claimed what can now be considered an urban legend of sorts: Retro Sonic Nexus, the Sonic allegedly fan game long in development that we haven’t seen in a tangible form for a couple of years now.
“[...] This Sonic CD port is what has shelved RSN,” said Brad Flick regarding the matter on the Sonic Retro forums. “The new website, the forum threads, etc. are all gone as a result and rightly so. SCD pays and advances Tax’s career and RSN, well, doesn’t.”
RSN used a customized version of the Retro Engine to power gameplay.
Flick, however, is quick to point out the game is not canceled.
“I didn’t say ‘canceled.’ I said ‘shelved.’ There’s a difference,” Flick said in a later post.
Indeed, on a defining level, there is a difference. But given the changes and controversy surrounding the SFG, formerly titled Sonic Nexus, and now with Whitehead’s hard work on the engine literally paying off, it’s likely the difference between a zero percent and one percent chance of anything more coming to light. If that one percent is enough to satisfy, keep dreaming. For the moment, most may remember (R)SN for what it was: A lot of hype, a bright window of opportunity, and little else.

How come this hasn’t won a Vaporware Award?
Kind of knew something was up when the dedicated website disappeared a while back. It’s understandable though; if I were Taxman, I’d have made the same decision in regards to my focus. The unfortunate downside is that this is probably never going to see completion, seeing how busy with paying jobs the people behind it are, which is a damn shame.
Dead Skin: For real. I don’t know why false hope still needs to be raised for this project. I think we all understand the circumstances; they should just put it out to pasture once and for all, and move forward.

I don’t think it matters. They might not want to cancel it for good- hopefully one day they will return to it. It makes way more sense to put your career in front of stuff like this, so I think both Whitehead and Flick are doing the right thing by shelving it for the time being. I haven’t seen much ‘false hope’ raised for it myself, but then again I haven’t been following the project too closely.
@Tristan
Because it’s not dead maybe? That’s probably a good reason not to cancel it.
Why not crack open the old MMF version XD
Neo Hazard: If it’s not dead, it’s a vegetable eternally in sleep, barely registering a pulse, needlessly on life support, zapping the funds and resources of some health provider.
Seriously. Literally NOTHING substantive has surfaced from this the past 2+ years to suggest otherwise.

First, you make de engine.
Den, you make de money.
Den… you make the fans unhappy by not finishing the thing that brought you acclaim.
…Or de women, whichever. (Though I’m not sure you can make those.)
Another one bites the dust~ “For now”
And another one gone.
And another one gone.
Another one bites the dust! “For now”
Everyone said to give up hope on Duke Nukem Forever, and look what happened (quality issues aside). I really do hope Nexus sees completion, or at the very least, the Retro Engine goes towards future official Sonic releases.
I think if we should all support the shit out of Sonic CD. THEN it can’t hurt to present RSN to Sega and say “look, there’s a big demand for this, let’s make it happen!”, fuck it, the worst they can say is “no”.
@Jasonchrist: I like this idea ((Approved))
Shame. Retro Sonic Nexus looked like it was gonna be a fun fangame.
@Jasonchrist
Agreed. Sega/Sonic Team already got Whitehead and the Retro Engine on board with SCD’s re-release. Presenting RSN to them would be a great idea.
Eh, there’s still hope. I never played XG (was a demo ever released?), but I played Retro Sonic and the 2008 demo of Nexus, and both were fantastic. Especially because of the Mac ports. ^_^
I really wanna see this finished. I doubt SEGA would agree, but it wouldn’t hurt to pitch the idea…
Don’t compare this to DNF though, because people actually WANTED that game to come out.
I don’t understand how Sonic fangames ever gain “hype” since a lot of them are all just the same and operate on lunch money budget.
