City Escape, among others, feature
The Tokyo Game Show may be drawing to a close, but that doesn’t mean media isn’t coming out of the event. Most recently, a YouTube video of live performances of four Sonic Generations stages – and the accompanying music – has been uploaded. In it we see Jun Senoue (among others) performing music along with footage to City Escape, Chemical Plant Zone and two other stages. At just over 13 minutes, there is plenty of plenty to watch.
Check out the video here. Be sure to give your thoughts of the music/footage you like and dislike.
Part two of the video can you also be found here, though does not feature any new Sonic Generations footage.
Thanks for regular reader ShadiWulf for linking to the footage!

Jun and Tomoya were pretty awesome. I don’t think the clip at the start of the second video shows enough of Jun’s singing for me to tell how good/bad of a voice he’s got… Jean did wonderfully atrocious. xD
I feel bad for the guy though, the crowd was not responsive in the slightest. xD
Loved it. Especially the remixes.
Awesome music!!! And gameplay footage is epic!!! Modern Sonic barely looks liek unleash gameplay. It mostly looks like Sonic Adventure style cuz of the necessary platforming parts especially in rooftop run!! anyways i have 2 questions:
1. Does anyone know what Sonic Generations’ frame rate is gonna be?
2. Will there be another demo released on XBL and PSN cuz i didnt have an internet connection for my 360 at the time and missed the deadline for the 20day demo.
@omachipthewisp96:
1) Most likely 30 FPS, but unconfirmed.
2) Leaks suggested another demo might be released during October (which would make sense). So stay tuned!
Oh ok thanks. I still rlly hope its 60fps but ill still be satisfied if its not. I cant wait 4 this game! its gonna be my bday gift cuz my bday is Nov 5 the Saturday after it comes out!!
Gah poor quality! It hurts D:
Choppy video is choppyyy…
Spagonia looks MUCH more open though. Barring Green Hiil, all of the Modern stages feel way more open and branching than Unleashed’s stages.
Great music, too. The added strings in Rooftop Run sound really nice, but the Chemical Plant is my favorite of all the ones we’ve heard so far. The change in tempo really makes the melody pop for me. I am shitting myself in anticipation for Planet Wisp’s music. Shit is everywhere.
Despite the video’s poor quality (it being record from Sega’s upstream), here’s my reaction:
Holy. Fucking. Shit.
Rooftop Run REALLY passed beyond my expectations, Seaside Hill sounds as lively as before, and Chemical Plant has that “Rock/Funk feeling that always soothes my ears.
Awesome new gameplay footage is awesome
As for the second video with Jean Paul Makhlouf, without his precious autotone, he SUCKS. Almost ruined “Escape from the City” and “It Doesn’t Matter.”
For the safety of your ears: DON’T listen to him
Awesome performance aside from the singer He even ruined his own song,reach for the stars.
I wish I could understand whatever Eggman was sayng.
Yeah, he was bad. Like, so bad that I almost can’t believe he agreed to perform live. He knew what notes he was supposed to hit… It’s like asking a big fat guy to run a decathlon. Know your limits, man.
Thoughts:
First off, the CP mix is much too slow. I don’t mind the arrangement necessarily, but the tempo of the original track was a huge part of it’s appeal. Seems a bit counter-intuitive to give the faster version of the stage a slower version of the theme.
Secondly, after seeing more footage of Chemical Plant, it’s starting to give me a similar claustrophobic feel to the one I got from GHZ. The level’s visuals are amazing, but I hate feeling so obviously constrained. I never felt so fenced in during the Unleashed levels, despite the fact that they were just as linear. Ironically, my favorite parts of the level are the transitions.
Regarding Seaside Hill, I can’t tell if it’s the remix itself or the use of live instruments, but the lead guitar sounds awfully quiet. Dislike. I like that the level itself feels a lot more open (though I’m seeing a lot of opportunity for the player to miss scripted sections and just die as a result). I was hoping to see more of the ruins, as the opening of the stage certainly did feel like a much less interesting looking GHZ. Thank God for the water, lol.
LOVE the new piano intro to Rooftop Run. Hoping that’s the real deal on the official OST and not just something done for the live performance. Overall I’m noticing some severe mixing issues (this is why I hate live music) that I’m sure won’t be present in the actual game and OST. Still, I like the subtle changes I’m hearing in the string sections of the song… It has the makings of a good mix.
Gameplay-wise, I noticed a bit of Adventure-esque platforming, which was nice. The level itself seems… taller, which gives it some potential for more interesting platforming and alternate paths. Overall though, it seems a bit boring compared to the rest, reinforcing my opinion that it’s a damn shame they felt the need to include levels from such recent games rather than focusing on throwbacks to content more deserving of an update.
One of the things I found interesting was the flow of the cutscenes into the gameplay. It’s relatively seamless and it looks like we’ll be getting one (or two) for almost every stage. Kind of a neat touch.
…but that City Escape vocalist is fucking god-awful. I’m glad to know the actual song doesn’t sound like that because just… fucking GOD DAMN. My mind is literally blown by the fact that anyone on the planet would pay this guy to open his mouth. Just… FUCK!
Rooftop Run was the most epic thing I’ve ever heard. Seaside Hill and Chemical Plant I’ve already heard. It was good up until Classic Escape from the City. What ever happened to Tony Harnell? Oh, and the gameplay of Seaside Hill and Rooftop Run were great!
Speaking of music, I know Jun’s doing some music for Generations, but does anyone know if Crush 40 or Bentley Jones are doing anything for Generations?
@Sonic
I haven’t heard confirmation of this, but I would assume Crush 40 would at least make an appearance for “Open Your Heart” during the Perfect Chaos battle.
Last I heard about Bentley he was super pissed at Sega for unpaid royalties on his music, so I highly doubt he’ll ever be associated with another Sega project.
Jean’s best performance, in my opinion, was Endless Possibilities…that’s still not saying much.
@ChaoticFox
Okay, thanks for clearing that up. Kinda sucks about Bentley Jones though =/. Absolutely loved all of his versions of Dreams of an Absolution.
ah man i thought you already knew about this TSSZ. I would’ve tipped ya. Anyway, Jean Paul really should just stick to autotune
Crappy video quality is crappy.
Awesome remixes are awesome.
I like the running on water part in Seaside Hill. It’s so short, but it looks (and probably feels) so cool!
Am i the only person absoultely loving the Modern Chemical Plant zone stage?? it just looks sooooo much fun to me. im overly impressed with every stage shown so far
That guy’s singing performance was the most entertaining thing I’ve seen in a long time.
Oh, and he sucked too.
Well, except for the vocal remixes. The stage BGMs were just fine.
I have Absolutely no idea where to post this so that it can be seen. I just came up with this neat idea i think would of helped sonic team a lot with their stage selection process. They have separated Generations into 2 volumes. Vol.1 could of had more classic stages (4 classic stages, 2 dreamcast and 1 modern). Vol.2 could of had more modern stages (1 classic, 3 dreamcast and 3modern) for a total of 14 stages all together. They could of released vol.1 this november and vol.2 on hedgehogs day
(feburary 3?) the anniversary of the sonic 3 release and announcement of sonic 4.
((sigh)) why dont i work for sonic team
meh, rooftop run looks SLIGHTLY less dull. but honestly its mostly the same from unleashed. probably going to be my least favorite level in Generations. Seaside hill and chemical plant look GREAT though! and I’m glad I’m not the only one who noticed the awful singing, lol.
@SOS
At this point we should all just cross our fingers for DLC.
All I have say about the only bad thing about that musical performance…..
Should of gotten Alex.
@Sonichedgehog
Endless Possibilities was preformed by Jaret Redick from Bowling for Soup, not by Jean Paul Makhlouf. He preformed Reach for the Stars.
Everyone keeps praising the “remixes”, but I hear no differences, except for horrid guitar quality.
I’ve gone deaf after i heard the singing X(.
Now i shall be called Helen Keller since im death and blind <3… and the fact my name is helen.
That Chemical Plant remix was sexy
I was expecting the Seaside Hill remix to be like that, it’s kind of like a soft mix of the Ocean Palace theme too
I liked the beginning of the Spagonia theme, nice touch to it.
I forgot the dude’s name, but he’s from Cash Cash and his City Escape cover sucked ass, it’s true peeps, without autotune, this guy sucks >:|
Autotune-dependent as it may be, I like the classic City Escape remix 10x more than the original version and 100x more than the remixed version.
I actually like Cash Cash quite a bit. I knew they used autotune and voice synthesizers, but I had no idea Paul was this fucking awful underneath it. I wonder if Alex is any better (and I wonder which of the two is ACTUALLY singing the City Escape song, because Alex’s performance at Sonic Boom was stellar)
The music sounded great especially for being incomplete due to being played live. But the singing… oh man. I will never forgive. lol
For the most part I didn’t feel there was anything special except for the fact that when Jun did start to sing a little (to my suprise), it made the song sound a little better. Then he stopped and it was right back to ear rape all on it’s own. -.- lol
@ChaoticFox
I believe neither sing City Escape. The Modern City Escape is re-recorded by the original vocalist from the SA2 version, and the Classic Remix is the original recording which was only autotuned at one part to force the the rhythm to match the “Endless Mine” melody for that one part.
At least as far as I’m aware.
Unless you meant who’s singing it HERE then my bad and I have no clue. lol
@Heagehawg
Hiiiii Helen. C: lol xD
@Foxboy
Derp, my bad. I was still stuck on the unofficial (but totally rad) version I heard at Sonic Boom. I just listened to it again, and it seemed like the autotuning there was pretty minimal, meaning that Jean Paul just sucks.
@ChaoticFox
rofl yeah. I don’t know why but that last bit actually made me laught out loud. =P
The singing was terrible.
To be fair, he probably had major jetlag.
…
Who am I kidding? xD He needed a keyboard and a vocoder a la Alex. Woulda been muuuuuch cooler.
What that guy NEEDS is his tongue ripped out. lol
The Music is awesome…my jaw dropped when I heard Seaside Hill and Rooftop Run for the first time…especially Rooftop run since I thought they were just going to fall back on the Sonic Unleashed soundtrack and just lazily copy and paste it into the game…good thing I was proved wrong…
By the way…after the two videos did anyone else immediately go through their Sonic soundtracks and listen to all the lyrical songs after they heard that guy sing? Because I did….thank god for storage space on my computer…proof that computers can be filled with something other than X rated stuff…lol
I don’t really get the complaints with the vocals, his dynamics were solid and he was on-key 9/10 of the time. Are you really that used to hidden Melodyning of vocals everywhere in modern music to where natural vocals bother you that much?
@Matt
Do you have ears? On-key 9/10 of the time? He couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket. You can tell he’s a bad singer by the way he has to forcefully change his voice in order to ATTEMPT to hit certain notes. His voice quavered more than a 12-year old hitting puberty. Honestly, I’ve heard better vocals coming from a goddamn high school talent show.
It has nothing to do with autotune or melodyne. Anyone who’s ever heard an example of decent natural singing can EASILY tell that this is a bottom of the barrel bullshit excuse for vocal “talent”.
@Matt
..do you know what a key is?
@Matt
It’s not that he was completely horrible just that he was too horrible to be singing a cover of the songs on stage professionally.
He sung about as good as an average fan who doesn’t have talent in singing. I’ve heard other ppl sing like that, some worse and even some better who still weren’t really great singers.
@DaleSaxon
That’s odd. My comment is somehow gone.
I originally said that none of the tracks are copy and pasted and that they’re either altered versions (mild remix or heavy remixes) or re-recorded specifically for this game (covers that sound near-identical but slightly different, covers that sound way different, covers that merely use different instruments, and covers that have a different tone to them.)
@ ChaoticFox:
The only way i will be satisfied with DLC is if there is at least 2 classic stages in. They want to do moder, they can do that, They want to do dreamcast, go ahead, but they can not neglect us of at least 2 more beautiful classic stages
I want lots of DLC but at the very least, the top priority should be SOME stage for Sonic 3. I can sympathize with their desire to do 3 x 3 for the eras, but it still a pretty big oversight not to have anything from one of Sonic’s biggest releases.
Everyone wants Ice Cap, but i’m kinda eh… we already had Ice Cap with Holoska. Which also makes it a likely probability. They could really just grab a majority of the assets and textures from Holoska and build a new stage with relatively few man-hours and some new music.
I’m just going to keep hoping on hope for Hydrocity though.
