Quality much improved
On the closing day of the Tokyo Game Show yesterday, YouTube footage of Jun Senoue’s set – which included new music and level footage from four stages – appeared online. Today, Senoue himself has uploaded much better footage and music quality from the performance. Curiously the City Escape segment is missing, though it has not been confirmed whether this is due to the sub-par singing performance or not.

It’s not really contradictory. You can have branching paths underwater and still have treacherous areas as well. My favorite zone from Sonic 2 was Hill Top Zone. Sure sometimes if you fell you would land safely on a lower path but you have to play like every fall could mean your death because often it would. It was the most exciting and rewarding stage for me.
Having safety paths under the more tasking water areas could prove a relief for some players, but I think not knowing what fate you’re going to meet underwater makes it a more exciting stage.
But I think we just have some different tastes for what makes a game fun.
I’m not saying there should never be pitfalls, I just think it’s better when they’re reserved for areas where you have more control
That, and when they’re not so prevalent. Put them on the lower paths, for sure.
Hill Top is the shit, and that’s exactly what I’m talking about. Good balance.
I think the solution to everyone’s problem is to have Sonic not control like butter on a griddle
