Speed Highway Also Namedropped for 1st Time
There are murmurs of some major reveals coming Monday when IGN reveals its Sonic Generations preview. But why wait? Across the Atlantic, Spanish website Meristation has already written a detailed preview, and there is a fair bit of juicy information within.
Meristation played an “almost final” version of the game, with six of the game’s known nine zones playable. Though there are no accompanying screenshots (or additional information, for that matter,) Speed Highway from Sonic Adventure was mentioned in the preview for the first time. Through a rough Google translation, we learn how the levels and missions work, and we also learn how the hub worlds work:
[....] Each of these worlds has also conducted five missions in their own levels, the classic Sonic or modern. These missions are accessed through doors that open alternatives in each room of each environment. Of course, also have a rating at the end and are quite long, varied and more difficult to perform. Moreover, through the first mission of each area unlock the key to that world, allowing us access to the officials and the new territories. As you can see a play structure that will so nostalgic platformer crazy fans of the genre.
Another success is the proper selection menu for worlds, stages and missions, which is itself a platform filled level with alternative paths, hops, and parts that get unlocked.
Meristation claims that every time we clear the main two acts of a zone, one of Sonic’s friends will be saved. So, it’s safe to assume there will be several of them within, and as noted before, they will play a secondary role in-game through the challenge acts. Anything beyond that, for the moment, is anyone’s guess.
We’re not yet completely sure if the challenge acts and missions are one in the same, but Meristation via a rough translation seems to indicate as much in explaining how those will work; it will be old hat for most:
With regard to missions, there are many types. We tested several different worlds but to give you an example and as we asked Sega, discuss only those of the first, the Green Hill Zone. In one instance we were asked to collect all the possible boot television to reach the goal before our shadow, in a frantic race to the sides that still reminds of Sonic Adventure 2. Another mission asked to arrive with a minimum number of rings at the end of an intricate path parallel normal level, so the missions will also explore areas where you will not pass on the standard route but do exist, we will see if we can not access to them. Another mission we ask in a minute and a closed environment of mobile platforms, defeat the maximum possible enemies. Another pursue a robot that throws rings through various hoops … Classical mechanics are pretty much but prolong the life of the game, especially if we want to unlock it in full, as we will need all the points to finish the stages, bosses, and S class missions and all the red ring of stars collected.
The big bomb comes when Meristation confirms that the original 1991 Sonic the Hedgehog will be an unlockable game within Sonic Generations, confirming the Genesis/Mega Drive feature found in the June demo. We suspect it may not end there, as Meristation explains a wealth of unlockables and skill upgrades, some of which they couldn’t disclose in their preview:
Precisely this is one of the great attractions we have found Sonic Generations, extras and shop skills. On the former, there is a large room of collectibles at the beginning of wasteland that serves as a selector of levels and missions. I can not reveal what I find here but we have already achieved with the red rings of star, a prized item hidden in some of the missions and all Acts of both worlds. Of course, we announced that fans can not resist character to unlock all this stuff, very juicy, you’ll see why in the analysis. On the other hand next to this room is the Skill Shop, where the points obtained from the rankings that we achieve at each level, mission and head can purchase upgrades to our protagonist, as higher speed, an extra life, the classic coat, more time in the air on jumps, standing land damage, which last longer rings around us to lose, an initial push to start with speed …and the unlockable that most surprised us, attention: the chance to play Sonic The Hedgehog classic MegaDrive in full.
The preview oozes of optimism for Generations, and even seems to pre-emptively place it in an arbitrary running for Game of the Year. It’s been a long time since that language has been used on anything Sonic related.
More should be coming next week when IGN releases their preview. We will bring you anything more that we learn from there.

@TenkoTAILS or maybe classic sonic has never met Amy before. And besides Her older version doesn’t look THAT much different from her younger version
@sonichedgehog
Yeah the Biolizard was a little out of nowhere, eh? Although, it was interesting.
@Leon_Rios
Even though it was out of nowhere it wasnt a secret. The biolizard is on the newspapers throughout the game of sonic adventure 2. At least in that one cutscene it is.
@thewafflefactory
Yeh… but still. What the hell were they smoking when they thought that up? XD
Biolizard still feels exempt from the monster-of-the-week rule for me. Chaos, Iblis, and Gaia were all what the story revolved around in their games, but Biolizard was just a surprise final boss. The story was really about Eggman’s Ark scheme and Shadow.
Biolizard was really out of left field though…
Emerald Coast pictures, Classic Sonic’s stage is original.

Game of the Year? As cool as that’d be, not likely.
Just read an article of like 26 most anticipated upcoming Sonic games. Both last year and this year I expected Sonic to show up due to the turn in the direction Sonic’s heading but no mention either time.
What’s worse is games I hadn’t even heard of and Super Mario 3D Land was on the freakin list!!! I mean I’m not sore about it or anything, but why the hell is a “finally successful” looking Sonic game made FOR HIS 20TH not mentioned on the list of anticipated games but Spider-Man: Edge of Time or whatever IS!?
@lolwut
Are those QTEs in Classic Sonic’s stage?
@HeatPhoenix kinda, those are the 1/2/3 panels from Sonic Adventure, so i guess you just have to press the jump button (B)
@FoxBoy
OPINION
WTF is that?
@X
You make a good point there. I still consider it part of the trend, but at least it didn’t drag the plot down with it.
@lolwut
lolwut?
No seriously tho, I kinda get the point of your comment… I think… but at the same time I don’t because I think you didn’t understand mind if you meant what I think you meant have meant. @__@
I’m just saying I don’t understand how the situation didn’t catch Sonic any attention but they listed games I haven’t even heard of til now due to not many ppl talking about it and even some games on there that I have heard a lot of but in a way that suggests people arenlt as interested. (Like Super Mario 3D Land. I don’t dislike it, but so far most the ppl talking about it seem to think it’s not that special, yet it’s on the list of “anticipated” games.)
Otherwise, I don’t really have a PROBLEM with these games being on the list. XD
@X
I definately agree with that. I kinda feel like the only “monsters” that were there were the ones who were considered gods or spirits which was Chaos, Iblis/Solaris and Dark Gaia.
I don’t count Biolizard as one as he’s just a random artificial life form and technically a character who appeared out of nowhere. Metal Overlord was a robot who merely grew big in order to be final boss material. Black Doom is actually a character and species who transformed only for the final fight-worthy power as well. I hardly consider either Genie final bosses “monsters”. And I don’t think Merlina counts as a monster.
Tho this could all be perspective. I just think that the final bosses have been fine and quite diverse. Perhaps if a final boss without an actual mind was thrown in their now and then (i.e. Giant Mech as it is just a machine Eggman controls) then that’d probably work too. (Egg Nega Wisp doesn’t count because… well it’s a Wisp. Just a big one in a metallic coating. XD)
I was okay with Chaos and then Iblis, I guess. It was when Gaia showed up that I think the pattern started to grow tired. I’m okay with monsters. But “gods”, as they were, I feel have lost their impact.
@lolwut
Yeah, I’m okay with those, they fit the Sonic Adventure theme.
How does a scientist go from a giant freaky lizard with extra legs…to a hedgehog…? How…? HOW…?
@FoxBoy
that was yahoo.com. aren’t those the same people who, around 2008, said sonic should just die??? and considering there are MULTIPLE mario games on that list, i don’t think u should really value their opinions.
in other news, who else predicted crisis city would be the last revealed stage??? sega saving the most epic for last???
There are many people who don’t play Sonic but have heard the negativity around it. After hearing so much of it for so long, when things finally turned around in Sonic Colors, they just stopped hearing about it or forgot about it.
That is, the information most people have about video games is secondhand or further. Whatever is floating around in the gossip mill is what’s going to be the consensus among gamers in general. If gossip points out all the bad things about Sonic while brushing off the good things about Sonic (because they’re not as interesting to hear), then they’ll never live Sonic down.
@X
That’s sort of my biggest issue with this whole monster thing. Because ST feels the need to end every game with an “epic” SS battle, they keep pitting Sonic against these all-powerful beings, and it’s just gotten kind of dull. Chaos was great, but the deliberate copy/pasting of that trend has grown oh-so-stale.
I’ll always prefer trashing robots, but I wouldn’t mind fighting creatures if they constantly being portrayed as “godlike entities”. I’d honestly prefer another Biolizard (sans the triteness of a title like “ultimate lifeform”) type boss to yet another Galactus-esque monstrosity.
Ironically, it completely detracts from the “epicness” they’re trying to achieve when these things just start showing up as often as they do. Soon, saving the world from Godlike beings will be too casual and tame, and Sonic Team will have to pull a Bayonetta and put Sonic against CREATOR OF THE UNIVERSE ITSELF!
Great news!! Generations is 60fps!! Jus look at this video and see how fast and smooth the framerate is!! http://youtu.be/NpTyXa7ypYA
I personally would like to see a Super Sonic final boss again if he was an unlockable as well. If the boss is another monster, I hope it’s at least more hands-on like the Unleashed 360/PS3 Dark Gaia fight.
@omachipthewisp96
It seems smooth, but there’s not a precise way to tell yet. (I don’t think so at least.)
Sorry for the triple comment, but here’s a picture I found relating to Speed Highway:
http://sonic.wikia.com/wiki/E-10_Cop_Speeder
Apparently, a concept art of the Cop Speeder from SA1 has been found.
@sonichedgehog
By “hands on” do you mean chock-full of QTEs? That fight was fucking bogus as all hell. The only parts of it that had any potential whatsoever were the “race to the finish” sections as normal Sonic.
That first half as the Gaia Colossus was actually PAINFUL to play.
@ChaoticFox
I meant the part with taking down the shield. The race to the finish as normal Sonic was amazing…although I sucked at it.
@ChaoticFox
But you have to admit…. transforming into a robot made OUT OF STONE TEMPLES WAS AWESOOOOOOOOOOOOME.
It made me feel like I was 7 again playing Sonic Adventure 2 for the first time. However much the actual robot fight was bogus, it was still exciting.
is it november yet?
@HeatPhoenix
Awesome in concept, sure. The cutscene was pretty neat… but the gameplay part was abysmal. The Wii version was actually 10x more fun (not that that was particularly great either). That’s kind of why I liked the sections with normal Sonic running on top of the colossus. Gave it a sense of scale.
I have the PS3 version and the Wii version and I don’t particularly remember the Wii fight because I completed that on release, but the PS3 version fight took me a few tries just because the concept of the fight is so broken itself (the robot part), I completed this one about 2 weeks ago or so.
lol, that’s actually what I did. I bought the Wii version and beat it before I even got my 360. Then when I bought the 360 version of Unleashed, I played it until that final boss fight.. I gave it a couple of tries and then gave up because it was so not fun.
Then, just a few weeks ago, I decided I had better man up and finish it. lol
