Speed Highway, City Escape, and Seaside Hill in motion
Most likely part of the embargo that was originally supposed to drop on Monday and was subsequently pushed back, IGN has posted a new Sonic Generations trailer for the “Dreamcast Era” of the game, giving us our first look – both in sight and sound – at Sonic Adventure‘s Speed Highway.
What is most amusing about this trailer is Sonic Heroes officially being co-opted in to the “Dreamcast Era” of Sonic’s history, despite appearing on the Gamecube, Xbox and Playstation 2 over three years after Sega announced their decision to become “platform agnostic”.

HOT DAMN. I think Im in love with that Classic Remix.
@funadonly
It’s not serious if you don’t seriously mean it. Either way, you got serious issues worse than the average fanboy. I’ve seen comments like what you posted and it’s just sad, even for a troll.
lol It’s ironic too. “Go kill yourself” is inspired by the idea that the world woud be better without certain kinds of people, and thus they should kill themselves to make the world better. Yet the ppl who say “Go kill yourself” are the ones who the world would be better off with. It’s like a family drunk telling his brother the family would be better off without him. o.o
Sorry, that was off topic. Just noting something odd. >->
Yeah, I thought it was hilarious to see Seaside Hill/Ocean Palace in the “Dreamcast Era.” They should’ve just picked another Sonic Adventure/Sonic Adventure 2 stage, and just put Seaside Hill in the “Modern Era.” Either way though it honestly doesn’t matter. I’m still going to play the hell out of this game…
@FoxBoy – Haha, completely agree. Don’t bash the people who have a different viewpoint as you, or else you’ll just come across as a complete douche… Now trolls, that’s a different subject altogether…lol
WHOA! Did anyone else see the SA2 reference at the part with Shadow? Watch this and compare it to the part in the dreamcast trailer with Shadow.
This game will be cool when it comes out, and I want to see the cutscenes really badly.
I seriously hope these “ending trailer boss scenes” are like the ones from 06 where they introduce the boss as well.
I also hope Sonic Team recreated the Sonic Vs Shadow scene from SA2 just before they raced in Final Rush
@funandonly: Criticizing certain aspects of a game isn’t bad. It comes down to A) what that complaint is and B) how you go about voicing that complaint.
Take Sonic 4. People complained about awkward physics and level design. That’s a legitimate complaint. Complaining about Modern Sonic being in Sonic 4 is not a legitimate complaint, and it doesn’t help your case if you call someone a “modernfag” for liking the modern design, or a “classicfag” for wanting everything in 2D 16-bit sprites or what have you.
Also, “don’t deserve to live”? You’re taking this a bit too far. Especially over something like Sonic who’s infinitely inferior to actual controversial topics, like wars and abortion and stuff like that.
I know this was off-topic, but I just thought something needed to be said.
@funandonly
He’s not dissing the game! He’s just forming an opinion! You can like a game without putting it on a pedestal.
@Sonick
Or find another name to fit the DreamCast Era. lol Like In-Between Era or some stupid thing like that. XP
And yeah, with trolls, it’s hard to even insult a troll since that’s what they want. And it’s not just to insult them for bothering you, but to insult them for being lame enough to be a troll. Like seriously, why would anyone want to be a troll? It’s not fun, it’s not funny, it’s boring, it’s stupid, it’s unroductive. It seems like only a person with the mentality of a 4 year old could be a troll nomatter how smart or stupid they normally are. (And you can’t argue with a 4 year old. All you get in response is “No you!” lol)
@sonic52789
“Axx: I like how when they showed Shadow they had the cinematic mimmick the one of him from the opening sequence of Sonic Adventure 2: Battle. (Except that was in Radical Highway)”
Yes, I believe someone did notice. lol
I can’t wait to here what music they will play live & learn or final chase hard to pick both are really my favorite
Now Crisis city!!!!
Cant funkn wait see buildings falling down while running from it, explosions, city on fire, tornado carry a CAR. I really think they are going to make this a EPIC stage due to sonic 06 glitches and other more stuff.
Speed highway music is amazing better than the first one, stage looking epic.
For the Vs. Shadow race, so long as it is For True Story.
@funandonly
You choose to act like an ignorant child, then I’m going to treat you like one. This isn’t a flame-war and I’m not TRYING to come up with clever “adult” ways to insult you. I’ve got better shit to do.
On the plus side, I do agree with you in that Generations looks to perhaps be the greatest Sonic game ever made.
I’m sorry to hear that you suffer from such serious psychological problems that lead you to wish death on anyone not completely blindly devoted with your favorite fictional character. I suggest you either seek professional help or try growing up and getting a life.
heh, I knew there’d be reactions to Sonic Heroes being flagged under the Dreamcast era. But hey, we got Sonic 4 under the Genesis classic flag when there’s almost nothing classic about it, so that makes us kinda even.
This trailer looks sick! November is just a month away! I wonder what games the Modern Era will portray. Something tells me Crysis City will be in there, hopefully a PLAYABLE version of it this time. I really hated those speed sections. XD
@zodic
Particularly because Sonic Team, Takashi Iizuka and the representatives only ever mentioned Sonic Heroes being in the Modern Era if they mentioned it at all. I’ve only heard fans call it DreamCast era and this is the first professional statement of Heroes being in the DreamCast era. But to be fair, in Sonic Generations I don’t think there will be a line to seperate the eras! Especially with their being a 3D Classic and Modern style to each stage in the game, it’ll pretty much feel like 2 styles all in one big era. (To be fair, it kinda is since Sonic Generations, as it’s own title, IS the latest Sonic game to date making all the stages in both gameplay styles newer than any of the games they’re representing. lol The “Generations Era”? o.O)
Gameplay looks like a beast.
OK, what the heck, I try to post a comment, but it never appears!
OK, now this one did, but not the one I wanted. Is there some kind of blacklist on what we are supposed to post?
I would say that the Dreamcast Era should be renamed the Adventure Era, but then there’s still one overriding fact. Sonic 2006 is also a part of the Adventure Era.
Meh. I think the “DC era” is a fine label. I also don’t think it matters at all, because it is JUST A LABEL.
Guess they should have just called them “Classic, modern, and even more modern”
I MIGHT have said this before, but with Shadow as a boss, I doubt he will be playable
HOPEFULLY, Sega will launch a DLC where you can play as Shadow along with a stage from Shadow The Hedgehog (2005).
^ That is highly unlikely.
@Sonic52789: “I MIGHT have said this before, but with Shadow as a boss, I doubt he will be playable”
Um… I don’t want to insult you but… NO DUH. We already have two playable characters, you think they’re just gonna shoehorn in Shadow randomly?
I doubt they’re going to put in a DLC starring Shadow, dude. I doubt it HIGHLY.
@sonic52789
I doubt Shadow would be playable…or even DLC. If anything, I’d tell you to look forward to the next game because now Shadow has a moveset and stuff so he could be playable in the next game.
This game is as cool and blue as sonic. But seriously every level that I wanted for the Dreamcast Era (even though I may have suffered amnesia and missed out on Sonic Heroes on the Dreamcast, At leased it stopped in time for the game on the GameCube. LOL) is sitting there in my face. Long live the Blue Blur.
@Amuro – If you read my full comment, you would’ve seen that I said
“HOPEFULLY, Sega will launch a DLC where you can play as Shadow ALONG WITH A STAGE FROM Shadow The Hedgehog (2005)”
Since SEGA skipped the game Shadow The Hedgehog from Sonic Generations, I think it’d be cool if they add a level from Shadow (05) as a DLC, plus they could add Shadow as a playable in that level.
@SonicHedgehog – Yeah I bet! Hopefully now that Shadow has a moveset he will be playable in the next game
@Sonic52789: I read your comment. I don’t know if you read mine, where I said I HIGHLY DOUBT IT.
It’s laughable how little sense people make.
They already said none of the other characters will be playable multiple times? Why the hell are any of you still asking if he’s playable? Most the poeple still talking about it I recall seeing comments from on articles where it specifically says that or talking to people who’ve already told them.
People are trippin about the DreamCast era having Sonic Heroes in it. They just did that because it’s easier. Who cares? And I don’t say who cares because it’s just a name because the names/labels/titles/categories/classifications DO matter. Otherwise we wouldn’t have them. If they called Rooftop Run part of the Classic Era would it matter? Technically no cuz it has no effect on the game, but technically yes because it defeats the poit of having the labels in the first place.
People will say “It’s just a name” and then say “We wouldn’t complain about Sonic 4 as much if it weren’t CALLED Sonic 4″. People act like this isn’t a big deal and then shit bricks because Classic Sonic has the ability to use the homing attack in the 3DS version for those who might actually want to. But even tho it doesn’t force anyone to do so if they don’t want to, they’re unhappy that those who DO want to aren’t forced not to. And then they say “So what if it’s not a big deal? We have the right to complain.” Then when other ppl complain over little stuff the same ppl say “Who cares? It’s not a big deal. It doesn’t really matter. Stop overreacting”.
Sorry for my little rant there. I’m tired of Sonic fans and people in general being such hypocrites and getting mad at each other and arguing for doing the same things that they themselves do anyways. But apparently everyone thinks that they are the only ones who are right. They’re the only ones who don’t have an attitude problem. One day they’ll pressure someone else’s opinions and then later accuse that person of being the one who pressured THEIR opinions. Then they’ll both claim that they’re the ones who are just stating their opinion. What a load of bull.
That’s why these arguments are stupid. Cuz you’re fighting a fight you can’t win since you’re both equally stubborn and hypocritical. It’s a shame TSSZ doesn’t just start posting articles where commenting is disabled. lmfao XD
@Emily: Actually, Sonic Heroes is in the Dreamcast Era because it was planned to be a Dreamcast game until Sega stopped production of Dreamcast hardware and software (at least in America).
Guys, Heroes was released in the same console generation as the Dreamcast. DC/GCN/PS2/Xbox were all of the same gen. So Heroes being in the same era as Speed Highway and City Escape makes sense.
06 starts the Modern era because it’s in the 360/PS3/Wii generations, which is what we are in right now.
But seriously does ANYBODY ever wonder what Sonic Heroes would have been like on the Dreamcast.
@Chris
I try to forget that game ever happened on ANY console.
@Amuro
I can’t really officially believe that unless it’s officially confirmed. And so far only fans have said this. Besides, even if it’s true, “originally planned” means that it ended up NOT being what it was originally planned. So if it was originally planned to be in the dreamcast era, then it ended up not being in the dreamcast era in the final product. I think they just say it’s in the dreamcast era out of laziness. lol
@Chris
No different than it is now.
@Foxboy
Regardless of how you feel about Amuro’s explanation, Tommy’s is more than adequate enough.
The DC “era” doesn’t necessarily have to include DC-only games, since an “era” is a period of time and therefore isn’t hardware-exclusive.
@ChaoticFox
Yeah I see what you mean about that. Believe it or not i actually enjoyed the game, probably due the special stages and just the step away from the adventure series (which was the best type of sonic game)
I take it you and Heroes have a very rocky relationship, eh ChaoticFox?
@ChaoticFox
I know Tommy’s is fine. That’s why I didn’t say anything to him. I mean it’s basically the same thing I’ve been saying anyways. They were lazy and just threw Heroes in the Dreamcast era. lol Or they were lazy and named it the Dreamcast era.
I think if it’s gonna be called “Dreamcast” era, it should be the era that refers to things in that actual era. But the DreamCast era ended with SA2. So it seems more like the other 3 consoles are actually a seperate era that started as the DreamCast’s ended (or rather causing the DreamCast’s to end)
But those are unimportant details. So it’s okay to be lazy here. Tho it IS weird that they named the era after a console when neither of the other 2 are named after consoles. Which is ironic since the Classic Era is the only one where they were all on the same exact console (unless we’re counting the bosses too) Seems like if all of them are on multiple consoles and the mid-era is gonna be called “DreamCast”, you mine as well call the first one “Genesis era” (“MegaDrive era” in other regions) and the last one “360 era” since it was the first console the new-gen Sonic games released on. (I think)
But yeah I don’t really think it matters. In all honesty, I don’t think there’s a right or wrong here. I think everyone has their own perception of it and it just depends on what each of us consider it, and this is just how the ppl who made the trailers consider it and the fans are just giving out possible excuses as to why they consider it as such.
@Chris
Oh yeah, while I say it’d be the same as it is now, I guess that doesn’t answer your question. lol The answer is yes. Some have wondered what it’d be like on DreamCast. I’d know cuz ppl have asked before. lol
@ChaoticFox
I’m with you on that one. I wasn’t a big fan of Sonic Heroes. I probably don’t dislike it as much as you (or more, idk maybe you don’t actually hate it, maybe you do) but I just find the game very uninteresting, uncreative and the controls feel bland and slippery too. Not to mention it has, at least in my opinion, the worst dialogue that particular cast has performed. Tails’ voice in that game, Eggman and Shadow’s lack of “style”, Sonic’s ear-raping nasally enthusiasm and Knuckles’ sudden red-neck style of acting was a major turn off for me as well. lmao Strangely enough, I think Rouge, Vector, Metal Sonic and Omega are the only voices I actually LIKED. o0
Doesn’t help that I actually really liked the Adventure series either. After playing the originals the Adventure series felt like the originals on steroids with more depth, detail, story, music and personality. It just offerend more and more to catch my interest. (Tho shame SA2 had NO SPIKES except in GHZ). Then Sonic Heroes was like this playdough world from McDonalds with NO story, no style, and somehow turned the Classic pattern of Stage, Acts, Special Stage and Boss from entertaining to annoyingly repetitive. (Possibly cuz it was the exact same stages in the exact same layouts in the exact same order with almost the exact same moves and objects 4 times in a row lol)
@Amuro
Game just sucks. No matter how hard I try to like it, it just plain sucks.
Yeah I wasn’t too fond of Sonic Heroes either. When I first saw it and played it I was. But I didn’t focus on it much when I found out about it, when it released I wasn’t excited, and when I played it, it was kinda fun but got old fast. lol
Hm, I can’t really hate the game tho. It was a gift and I will always find it enjoyable in some way.
And in Sonic Generations, Seaside Hill suddenly looks very appealing.
Kind of getting sick of see city escape gameplay now but I’ll still play it no matter what just to much.
Sonic Generations is going to be awesome. Is going to get the first day? Does anybody want DLC other than me
THIS IS EPIC.
does anyone else notice how classic sonic’s jumping sound effect morphs a little at the end? sounds ki9nda weird but.., whatever
