Will Celebrate “Outstanding Contribution” from 20 Years’ Work
Though his games have not been so lucky of late, Sega and Sonic Team will be pleased to know Sonic will walk away this year with a coveted Golden Joystick Award to mark the blue hedgehog’s 20th anniversary.
Sonic will have the first ever Outstanding Contribution award from the yearly event, according to the UK’s Official Nintendo Magazine. Think of it as the equivalent of a lifetime achievement award from the Oscars, and that’s saying something, considering the hedgehog’s achievements (or lack thereof) during the mid to late 2000s.
The Golden Joystick Award ceremony will be held in London on Friday. Thanks to AugieD who tipped us on Twitter.

Well, here’s something to send to AntiSonicEnterprises!
…Sweeeeeet…
^Joke, BTW.
Congratulations to the Blue Blur, Sega, and Sonic Team for getting the “Outstanding Contribution” award. With Generations (360/PS3/PC) is increasingly approaching us, this is fantastic.
For almost a decade (2003-2008), Sonic’s had a couple of rough spots but here’s this:
1. 06 almost ruined Sonic.
2. Unleashed brought back the speed.
3. Colors brought back the platforming.
4. Generations will bring back the exploration for the first time since SA1.
Awesome!
I’m proud of you sonic :’)
Sonic not cute, Good.
I’m surprised, but happy for Sonic Team right now.
And thus Sonic has returned
Yay! Hurray for Sonic!
Not to piss on the parade or anything, but aren’t there more deserving franchises for this award? Good for Sonic and Sega though.
“considering the hedgehog’s achievements (or lack thereof) during the mid to late 2000s”
Which, now that I think about it, wasn’t really that bad.
I mean, Shadow The Hedgehog was kinda cheap but it wasn’t that much worse than Heroes, which a lot of ppl still like.
Sonic 06 was a glitch-fest, but it’s only 1 title.
Secret Rings was originally praised. Then later bashed. So in a way it’s not hat bad since it WAS originally praised, and even when it was bashed that’s still only 2 titles now.
Then Unleashed came out, which, in comparison, was awesome. It later received criticism for WereHog but ppl said the Day stages were how future Sonic games should be. So it was sort’ve debatable.
Black Knight has some love but still a lot of hate, especially due to the sword. Not a good excuse really. But that makes only 3 titles.
Colors was based off of the feedback of the day stages in Unleashed and is currently praised. So IF you consider Unleashed as one of the bad ones that’s still only 4 titles. If not, then it’s only 3.
And Generations is looking fantastic.
That being said, I’d say Sonic’s track record is actually pretty decent. The track record of the fanbase’s reaction over time and perspective of the history is terrible. But that’s because they view 1/7th of the series being bad as if it were 1/2 or more of the series. lol (Doesn’t help that, for no reason, all new Sonic games “are terrible” just because “Sonic is dead now” nomatter how good the games actually are)
The amount of bad Sonic games are the minority. True fact is ture. =P
Congrats Sonic.
@QuietGuy92
Exactly!
And note that how on that list of yours the only truely broken game was 06. whether you consider Unleashed as a bad game or not, you have to see it as a major improvement in overall quality from 06 and then it just gets dramatically better from there each new game.
And then think about this. In Sonic Generations, what comes before the stage in 06?
A stage in Heroes. Also debatable, but the point is that the majority of the fanbase see “the last good Sonic game” as SA2 or Heroes, and this is right before 06.
If the series was good pretty much til 06 and has made dramatic progress each title after 06, the series overall has done very well. The only reason it seems like Sonic has a bad track record is because everyone keeps SAYING he does, so it gets stuck in our heads as true. But it’s not. lol
Sonic has been the most popular video game character in Europe for years, plus his early years did revolutionize the handling world. And even though some franchises have been successful like gears, halo and cod, they haven’t been around as long nor has really been revolutionary as sonic has. Plus sonic will out live most other franchises, and soon games like halo and cod will be obsolete. You can always make a military shooter or space shooter, or more graphic games, but there will only be one speedy blue hedgehog.
I meant gaming world, stupid iPhone
It’s about time! Congratulations, Sonic! [:
Finally people will understand that Sonic is back!!!!!
Whoo! 20 years of running fast and 20 years of fans fighting over nothing!
FoxBoy you forgot the lack luster Sonic Rivals 1&2, Sonic Freeriders and Sonic Advance 1, 2, 3. Heck, there are a bunch of bad Sonic games from before 2000s, during the height of his popularity, but we’ll leave that in the past.
Well this is good to know. Sonic may have a scattered quality record over the years but to be fair I have always backed the poor blue fella. 1st game I ever played and all that.
Seriously people… stop saying Sonic is back!!! He was never gone >:T
Yeah sonic is back and kicking, I can rub it in the faces of people I know who say sonic should die, I have a reason and can kick there ass.

Today i found out Mr. R (A teacher that works with speds in my school)
use to be a sonic fan because he loves the classic sonic games but didn’t like sonic anymore once sonic turned 3D….I gotta tell him this and about sonic generations so he can get his hopes up lol…only if he isn’t another clone of kuta/nicochi. Too bad he doesn’t know that sonic generations has a part that plays exactly like the classics
Oh yes. This can only mean one thing….
THE SONIC CYCLE HAS OFFICIALLY BEEN BROKEN! HAHA! FINALLY! SONIC HAS RETURNED!
Way to go sonic! this year is all yours buddy
@Blade
And LOL, even though the franchise is getting a reward people are apparently trying to put a damper on things.
Awesome! I bet Lizuka will go to the ceremony.
