Close to Release, a Close Split
We end the latest TSSZ News @Issue poll with some interesting timing, given the scare over what ended up being a fake leak of an alleged Sonic Generations Steam build on Sunday. For the past two weeks, we asked if you thought the general Generations release to PC would promote piracy and lower the game’s overall sales.
Plenty of readers responded. Out of 1,445 votes, 42 percent thought it wouldn’t, though not far behind were the yays at 37 percent, just five percentage points apart. A fairly larger than normal delegation, 21 percent, were unsure.
Early leaks and piracy are like milk and cookies in Sonic culture. Nearly every Sonic game of the past three years has seen some sort of significant leak, be it anything from early details released to data mining to games pirated just before release. Though major details like the level list and even the game’s existence were known months before Sega intended, Sonic Generations has so far been relatively lucky in comparison; there remain significant portions of the game most still do not know of.
A new poll is now available to vote on. You can discuss the results of this poll below in the comments.

People will, but if they get arrested it will be their own d*** fault
Has anyone ever got arrested for pirating a video game? Soooo many ppl pirate video games these days, so can it be possible to track everyone who’s pirated a certain game? It would be kind of hard
I don’t think so, i mean this is the 20th anniversary sonic game, and possible the BSGE (Best Sonic Game Ever lol) so if someone really want it, them he will buy it, the most of people who are going to pirate the game, will be the people who won’t buy it if they can’t piracy so, i think it wont be a big problem.
I lol’d, people voting it’ll promote piracy don’t know how easy it is to pirate on consoles. Honestly, some games are much, much easier to pirate on consoles than on PC.
yes will promote piracy because there will be a lot of torrent sites whit sonic generations uploaded and many people will download the game instead of buying it
Whats the point of pirating a game anyway if you have the time download all of those torrents and files for one game than you should have the time to save some money for the game or maybe get a job.
I guess to some people, piracy is more of a convinecne than the cost of the game. Not big on the issue here, sorry.
Regarding the new poll: $10 sounds like a much better price for SCD’s re-release unlike what happened last time with S4′s price around $15.
I really can’t wrap my head around why a release on PC specifically would promote piracy. A release on another console would increase profit, and even though it’s only natural that pirates would follow as well, their effect on sales would be negligible.
@Zephyr
Make something easier to do and it will be done more often. End of story.
PC just happens to be the “console of choice” when it comes to piracy, because, contrary to what Cerveza’s suggesting, it’s one of the easiest platforms to do so on. Sure, you can pirate console games too, but it’s usually a more time consuming process that occasionally involves bricking your console.
@ChaoticFox
Lol no, there’s pretty much no risk of modding and pirating games on any of the 3 consoles, even the Wii. All you have to do is plugin a flash drive with a file on it for PS3 and spoof the update – if it doesn’t work, it just gives you an error message and returns back to normal. On the xbox 360 all you have to do is either open it up (which is harder) or buy an adapter at target or somewhere for $5 to install a software mod. Not to mention many people (if pirates anyways) would rather do that than buying a brand new PC with good enough specs (or upgrading their current one). So my point stands.. Most people who pirate it on PC will just end up buying it on console.
I dont think it’ll promote it. I mean on the PC torrent article on sonicstadium (before it was found to be fake, in like what? 10 mins?) there were people who disliked the action, and outright hated it. IF there will be a pirated PC version, I doubt most people will download it just for honor’s sake
@Cerveza
Sounds wayyyyy more complicated than any of the PC pirating I’ve done over the years.
And who says the pirates need to buy a brand new PC just for Generations? Who says they even own an Xbox to begin with? You’re just making shit up on the spot and spouting it off as fact now.
Bricking is still very much a problem with both the 360 and Wii. Not familiar with PS3 modding myself.
Being released on PC would make it easier to pirate than if it were just on the console version (given these are the HD consoles and not the Wii). But it would be pointless with the specs. I’ve already known people to say they’d pirate it just test it out before buying it tho due to not wanting to buy something that doesn’t work.
But I don’t think it’ll “lower” sales. If anyone pirates it, it’ll just make it not as high, but it’ll still be higher than it would be if there were no PC version at all. And it’s not like EVERYONE is a pirate.
And yes people have gotten arrested for it. Can’t track down everyone of course but it IS easy to get caught at the same time.
@ChaotixFox
Oh please. Have you seen the fucking system requirements? That’s all I need to say. And pirating Steam games is incredibly complicated, it usually takes a few days for them to be cracked, whereas then the crack still requires Steam and you have a high risk of getting banned (most people with a PC good enough to pirate/play the game probably game with Steam anyways, as all good PC games now require it or some other service.) and even then they are unable to use a lot of the game’s features, such as Stats, Cloud, Leaderboards, and Achievements.
I’m pretty sure it’s much easier to plug in a flash drive into your console than to go through the risk and complication of pirating a Steam game..
I already have the game on Gems Collection, but I’d be willing to pay $10 tops if I didn’t have it.
Lol, I remember a friend of mine had the FBI come to his house because he pirated Fallout add-on on his PC.
Kinda lolsworthy. xD
I think $10 is way too much for Sonic CD, especially since the other original remade titles (using the same fan engine) sell for less. I think $5 is the absolute maximum they should charge for this title.
Do what you want cuz a pirate is free, you are a pirate!
Regarding new poll, $10 is the maximum I will pay, although the classic games are like $5, so I think it should either be $5 or $6. If it’s more than $10, then it’s too expensive IMO.
@DoctorEggman I cannot believe you beat me to that. No-one uses that joke anymore! It was my perfect plan! XD
You know what the PC version WILL promote? Awesome mods and skins.
