“Sonic Dimensions” Allegedly Well in Development
We’re technically not yet at Sonic Generations‘s launch day. But TSSZ has learned through a source that development is already well underway on Sonic’s next adventure tailored to Nintendo’s next console–and it’s not a Generations port.
TSSZ has learned Sonic Dimensions, a working title for the next Sonic, will take place directly after Generations and be a spiritual successor to Sonic Colors. We don’t know if this game will necessarily be exclusive to the Wii U, but we’re told it will have visual quality in line with Generations and it will take advantage of many Wii U specific capabilities. That includes the use of the Wii U mini-tablets for up to a 4 person multiplayer, and use of the revised Wii U remote and its touchscreen to destroy enemies and activate powers.
So what’s the gimmick this time? TSSZ has learned Dimensions’s storyline will center around another time-space continuum shift at the hands of Eggman that not only alters Sonic’s world, but himself. Sonic will allegedly split into multiple personalities denoted by color–each of which having their own unique abilities. That’s right, if this holds, recolored Sonics are now a reality.
In addition to the main Sonic, which will remain blue and act as a core uniting “ghost” of sorts in-game, we’re told there will be five other colors: Red, Orange, Purple, Green, and Yellow. We were told very specific things about each Sonic. Red Sonic, for example, can cause explosions to presumably open up new areas, but has a slow speed and a short jump. Purple Sonic, allegedly parodying Shadow and Silver, will be able to move platforms and float, with the dark nonsensical attitude to boot. And perhaps the most interesting tidbit: our sources compared the Orange personality to Big the Cat, a lumbering hedgehog even slower than his red counterpart…until he’s powered up. There is also a yellow Sonic–not a Super Sonic–that will be the fastest of them all, but take damage easily. The source alleges only two of the personalities can be used in-stage, but all may be able to combine and act as an equivalent Super Guide. The White Sonic allegedly pops up as an option after dying in a stage a certain number of times. Using it guarantees the lowest rank at the end.
If that sounds a lot like a Nintendo idea, that’s because it is, and no wonder; we’ve learned Sega is allegedly working directly with some Nintendo developers on this game. That’s in addition to most of, if not the entire staff for Sonic Colors being back on board for Dimensions. The Nintendo developers are allegedly assisting Sega design the levels, which we’re told will be more surreal, on similar thinking as Colors. Music Plant from Sonic Advance 2 was cited as a stage that may see its ideas and concepts revived for Dimensions.
Another concept allegedly coming back: Rival battles. Eggman’s scheme is allegedly so out of control, it splits apart not just Sonic, but everyone in his world, including his friends, and the mad doctor himself. One example we learned about was the possibility of Sonic and personalities fighting an evil version of Amy Rose, finally tired of Sonic refusing her advances. We’re also told Eggman will split, and a kind-hearted version of him will act as Sonic’s guide.
The final item of note from our source is yet another assurance that we will see some 2D gameplay within, and those mechanics will be “directly ripped” from the classic Sonic physics, though we’ve heard that line for a while.
Our source requested anonymity, as the source was not authorized to speak publicly about the above details. The source also clearly advised to not necessarily take all the information at face value, since this is still a work in progress.
We are likely months away from knowing anything more about this project, if these details hold up. There remain a lot of matters here that are a bit rough around the edges, and for that and other reasons we’re filing this under Rumor despite having confidence in at least some of the information presented. Remember: When we learned about Sonic Generations in 2010, six months before its formal unveiling, it was known as just Sonic Anniversary with only a few details clear as well. This is something we will have to watch over time; do not expect instant gratification. Nevertheless, we will pass along anything more that we hear.

Sonic games always have awesome stories
“I don’t care about this rumor, but reading the comments here has given me a thought. Why is everyone complaining about wanting to play as different characters again? SEGA is making games with only Sonic because everyone complained about having to play as different characters. Everyone said that they just wanted to speed to levels as Sonic like they did in the Genesis games, instead of having their experience hindered by having to play as other characters. So now that SEGA is making games with only Sonic, everyone thinks it’s boring and wants to play as different characters again? Am I the only one who is baffled by the sheer stupidity of this?”
@ Zack Frost
You would have a valid point…. That is, if it weren’t for the fact that many of us never wanted characters other than Sonic to be forever excluded from playability. And by the way, you seem completely unaware that Tails and Knuckles have been playable since the genesis/mega drive games You didn’t by any chance actually believe Jeremy Parish from 1up.com when he claimed to speak for “everyone outside of Sega’s payroll” did you?
Okay, now. I think I’m changing the names to Green Nature and Teal Wind to Green Wind and L.G. Nature. (Light Green for short)
@Marwan
I agree, if I’m honest, now that I’ve replayed Unleashed, I feel that Generations was a step backwards, it did undoubtedly handle better, but the 2D bits were far inferior to Unleashed. I found in Unleashed it flowed a whole lot better, and the transition wasnt so noticable, where as in Generations it was so noticable it was almost clunky.
Hmm, can’t wait to see more info….
all i want to see the next sonic game is shadow and silver AS playably characters
Alright, now. I’m, now adding the elements of mirror and shadow. I think I’ll call the mirror of Cerulean Scarlet and the shadow of her Violet.
Okay,I’m changing Violet to Sky.
This sounds like an interesting idea. It would be even more interesting if the personalities of each Sonic will shift. Also, I would like to see a more developed plot. The games have been getting better in terms of gameplay, but their story has been severely lacking as of late. We don’t need another Mario (that franchise has a pretty lackluster plot as it is).
Honestly, I just want to play the other characters as an option that handles like Sonic, but with their special abilities.
And for those who want SA3, we had 06 and Unleashed aka. “World Adventure”. That is about as close as you can get, so move on from it. The only time I play the Adventure games is the speed sections; I don’t enjoy Knuckle’s treasure hunting gameplay, or Tail’s shooting gameplay.
I hope its not just for wii U, i cant affor all these systems!!! If it comes out on multiple consles i believe sega would make more money. wii U is still not to sure if it is gonna sell a lot of consoles on the release date. Wii sold alot but that was because it was unique, but IN MY OPINION i dont think the wii U is unique enough to get as much sales. Im was way more excited for the wii than i currently am for wii U
OH PLEASE IT FAKE IT FANMADE
I just think that if Sega strayed away form the whole #-d counterpart of their games, they would have a hit. Just sayin, tho…
Sounds crappy to me! That idea will doom! C’mon SEGA, GENERATIONS WAS GREAT! and now this? What the heck is wrong with you? 4 personalities… Sounds so much Zelda Four Swords to me!
Dimensions has been proven false, as one of the Sonic Team members stated “I think it is a total hoax.” But realy, we don’t need “a new Sonic”. What was wrong with Sonic Adventure 2 Sonic? He had great spped. great control, and overall he was total kick-ass. So why did Sonic need an “upgrade”? the bost feture imported in Sonic Rush-Sonic Generayions was TOTALY unessisary. All it did was make the stages “bost to win”. But in Generations, they actualty made it so bosting WASN’T a nessesidy. You could still get an S rank on ANNY stage without bosting. Same with Sonic Adventure with the spindash. It was a FETURE! Not the core of the game. With Generations, the “added feture”, was mainly used for speed runs. And now that Sonic Team has the perfect gameplay, what do they do with it? They throw it away. I feel they do that alot, such with voice actors. I feel they look at the past, and how the gimics fared back THEN, and not now. I belive this was the case with the first “Sonic” gameplay, with the first 5 games. After Adventure 2, the 3d games took a DRASTIC turn for the worst. Heroes was mediocere, Shadow the Hedgehog had down-right ATROCIOUS controls, and Sonic 06, is constitered to be the worst 3d Sonic game EVER. After this, Sonic Team droped the spindash. Sonic and the Secret Rings, and Sonic and the Black Knight were on rails, and people did not enjoy these games. After this, the “Modern Sonic” era begain, with the “bost to win gimic”. BUT with Generations, they mixed that up with ATON of platforming. But, Sonic Team decided to drop that. Why? They finaly got Sonic just, right. Not perfect (I do not enjoy the game as much as everyone else, and I dont find the game as “amazing” as everyone says) but alright. So, my main point is, why get the style JUST right, then throw it away. Hopefuly, the “new Sonic” will be an improved Adventure Sonic. JJ
Were the hell did all the Chao’s go!!! Me loves Chao’s!:(
this is too crazy to be true so it is. at least i have a wii u so i can play it.
