MW3, Skyrim, Others Shoving Sonic Out of the Market

You could almost see this coming given the unexpected sales drop from official UK tallies.  The independent website VGChartz today released North America sales estimates for last week, and the news for Sonic Generations was not good, despite the advantage of a full week of sale.

Last week, VGChartz estimates the combined domestic sales of XBOX 360 and PS3 units came in at just over 40,000 units, a frightening drop of more than 76 percent from launch week.  XBOX 360 sales were estimated at at 23,713, and PS3 copies were estimated at 16,778.  How poor is that?  A newly released game for little children that requires the use of an interactive toy, Activision’s Wappy Dog for Nintendo DS, performed better than either.  (Interestingly enough, Sega Toys is credited in the development of Wappy Dog, likely on the hardware side.)

More unsettling: We compared these numbers to that of the last major Sonic release on the two systems, Sonic Unleashed.  While Generations dropped in week 2, Unleashed sales went up in 2008.  In the case of the PS3 version, Unleashed‘s week 2 estimated sales of more than 25,000 handily beat Generations‘s figures.  However, Unleashed had the benefit of Black Friday falling in its second week of release.  We’re still about two weeks away from knowing what kind of an impact that shopping day will have on Generations.  It may very well not be until then where we see a sales spike up.

But going forward, Generations has several triple-A titles to compete with.  As in the UK, titles like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, and Skyrim were released, and both dominated the charts. We again note the VGChartz numbers are independent and unofficial.  If this downward trend continues, we certainly won’t see anything official until Sega Sammy’s earnings report in February.

European estimates for last week should be out later this week.  Given how we know the drop was substantial there pared with the estimates across the Atlantic, they could be cringe-worthy.
