Regular stages, boss fights to view
With the 3DS version of Sonic Generations two days away, you may be staying clear of any discussions of it. For those of you who can’t wait, however, YouTube is the place to go if you want to watch playthroughs of the stages (and more). Coming courtesy of user Thigolf, we get to see a well-rounded picture of how the game looks from the Classic and Modern perspective.
Footage is being uploaded daily at the moment, so stay tuned. Also, if you haven’t decided whether to buy the game, we will be reviewing this version.

First Comment. I shall commend my doing by saying one simple thing-
Boobs.

Anyways, NintenDaan1 said that he would be ripping some music from the soundtrack, though he’s only ripped Modern Tropical Resort.
AWESOME GRAPHICS !! Especailly for the final boss.ITS IN 3D ! And much better than consoles version.Levels and bosses much better than console versions.But console version has pretty good msuic,levels,bosses and graphics too,so i love them both equally.
But the rivals dissapointed me :/ I mean they are just freaking races :/ BUT DAT EGG EMPEROR ! DAT TIME EATER ! DAT MUSIC ! DAT GRAPHICS ! DAT BIOLIZARD ! DAT LEVELS ! DAT ROLLING ! But i didnt like that levels desings so much lmao.
It’s kinda disappointing to see that Classic Homing Attack has apparently been made obligatory (ie. the levels have been designed around it, placing badniks across gaps and right after spring jumps). It kinda bugs me cos with console Generations, even though it had the odd badnik groups over gaps, bouncing off them the old fashion way had a nice flow to go with it whilst using the home attack seems to be a bit stop start.
But yeah, they definitely improved on Time Eater.
Quite frankly, Dimps appears to have completely missed the whole point of Generations – that is, to say, to highlight the best qualities of both the Classic gameplay, and the Modern gameplay, which on Consoles was the most robust and creative I’ve seen out of the whole Daytime concept since Unleashed. Here, they really just appear to want to blend the two together as much as they can while keeping them distinct enough to categorize into Classic and Modern — it all seems rather straightforward, with the Classic stages in Genesis being outright copypastes, and there’s not a whole lot of variation with the gameplay. Here we have Classic Sonic, and then here we have a slightly faster Modernized Sonic on similar gameplay, but faster! And sometimes 3D.
The bosses seem a little better here, but that still doesn’t -quite- make me want to get this outright — you need to do a little better than that to try and hook me. Seeing the level design as it is just doesn’t really get me interested, and honestly, I find myself more disappointed than anything else.
I dunno. To me, The HD versions are superior, with a variety of stage routes and special gimmicks per zone to differentiate everything and make it a hell of a joyride, though I am a little concerned that some folks may deem 3DS the better model just because it plays it way too safe and sticks with an overall ‘Classic’ feel to the whole thing.
But that’s just me.
Sega,port the 3DS version on Wii as it is and take my money.
Horrible level design.
Homming Attack in classic sonic is NOT optional.
Horrible grahpics (compare with mario 3DS land)
The postive point of this version:
The classic physic is better than HD version (rolling)
It seems like Dimps were struggling with the Classic Sonic gameplay as the 1st 3 are direct copies of Megadrive stages and when they realised that they couldn’t copy the other classic levels, they just gave him the homing attack and made the level design like Sonic 4 in a way.
Also lack of badniks, level design and no proper fmv cutscenes, make me think Sega/Dimps are either lazy or that this started life as a game for the original DS… and don’t give me that ‘new to the technology crap’ as they made 3D bosses including an exact copy of SA2 Biolizard, so surely using SA style gameplay for modern would have been a possibility and might have even stopped people complaining about classic Sonic using the HA as they would have been more of a diffrence between the two Sonics because looking at it now, it seems to be the same gameplay except for a diffrent character sprite and the speed dash.
Sorry for hating folks, i’m a big Sonic fan (have been for years) but i’m just kinda disapointed with how it turned out and if I was to buy it then i’d be buying it purely for the 1st 3 levels (nostalgia factor), online multiplayer and the bosses.
@Lucas
Opinion
Not really
Opinion
@ worthy: i like the 3DS version but I also am seriously wondering what went through Sonic Team’s mind with the 2.5D sonic gameplay. The Special stages and Biolizard, and Egg Emperor look great in 3D so why not make the levels the same way.
@Lucas: “Horrible grahpics (compare with mario 3DS land)” Lolno.
You’re just a troll that fails so much in life and dedicates his life to troll a Sonic fansite.
I really like some of the stages, Egg Emperor looks good and the Time Eater fight is better than the Console version IMO. (NO ITS A HOMING SHOT)
But is it me or the Classic version of the stages from Dreamcast and Modern are the same as the originals?
@Timothy, that is what i’m wondering too and if it was due to lack of time then they could have pushed the release date back?
Still we have the multiplayer levels to look forward too, although i’m guessing it’ll be more like the rival races on here rather than Sonic 2′s head to head.
@Blue Wisp He is not a troll. There is no excuse for the way they designed it. Even the first “Sonic DS” beta had better graphics.
@XaDos
That’s not true. The graphics in that beta were just a line with nothing in the background. That beta’s graphics put all of the polygons and DS’ power on the Sonic model than the levels themselves. Plus this is Dimps’ first attempt at making graphics with a weird and new processor the 3DS has.
Only Water Palace and Tropical Resort are good.
Hey, but did you guys know? It’s a homing shot.
@Lucas: I agree with you that the level design looks kinda… crap, but you’re really comparing graphics from one game to another? Really? Are you that much of a graphics whore, or that much of a Nintendo fanboy? And of all your complaints, you didn’t even state that Modern Sonic’s sections should have some actual 3D elements to it, and not just 2D with a cinematic camera shift?
@HeatPhoenix: He should probably be careful.
I don’t like much mario. I like sonic.
Mario and sonic = platform and exploration game. Mario 3DS = 3DS game and Sonic generations 3DS = 3DS game, the comparation is valid.
Time Eater actually looks fun to play against. Same goes for Biolizard and Egg Emperor…
BUT FUCK! WHY DOES IT LOOK LIKE CLASSIC HOMING ATTACK WILL FORCE YOU TO USE IT IN CERTAIN POINTS OF A LEVEL?
Pros:
+ 3DS Time Eater better-looking than HD Time Eater
+ Online multiplayer
+ Remixes for both Sonics sounds good
+ Special stages
+ Inclusions of Biolizard (SA2) and Egg Emperor (Heroes)
Cons:
- Level design is awful compared to the HD version
- Classic’s levels are same exact copies of the originals
- Modern’s sections should’ve had actual 3D sections instead of 2D cinematic camera shift
- Classic using the HA in same manner with badnik gaps and after spring jumps like in S4
- Lack of other handheld stages besides Water Palace (Rush) and Tropical Resort (Colors)
There’s some bright spots in Generations 3DS but dont forget that Dimps is stil lazy as usual.
I really don’t see anything wrong with the level design (except the scarce amount of badniks in the latter levels). Homing attack/Shot whatever is definitely OPTIONAL the guy was just using it a WHOLE LOT!!! Looks like good ol’ classic platforming to me (multiple paths and all). Don’t knock it for what it isn’t or what it could’ve been (yes they could have done the Modern stages in full 3d but anyway…). The video quality is poor so I can’t say much on the graphics and usually when you get your hands on a 3ds game and play it with the 3d cranked up, it looks better than just the screens and video footage. I can’t compare this to the console version yet because…I haven’t played this version yet. Uuuummm yeah I will be snagging this though.
Love this game man.
When i seen Biolizard and Egg Emperor i said, Why couldnt Dimps design levels and add more background work like the bosses instead of Classic 2.D.
Pros of this game.
1.Multiple paths to travel around.
2. Dat good music.
3.Boss Designs are overkill.
4.Nice ammount of Gimics in each stage.
5.Magical Camera Angles.
6.Background Events in stages.
7. Hub Art was good.
8.Nice ammount of Platforming.
9.The 3DS version has more stages! [aka Multiplayer]
10.Replability.
This is my favorite Handheld Sonic game of all time.
And thus people still act as if the HA matters…
I dont expect good reviews for the 3DS version… OBVIOUSLY it will NEVER be the same as it console counterpart. Still… there is some stuff on the console version I still dont like:
1. Dificulty. Its SOOOOO easy to get an S rank, while in other games you had to work for it!
2. Boss fights… the ONLY ones who made sense to me were Silver and Egg dragoon. D.E.R. was never easy in Sonic 2, Metal sonic is the easiest in the game, Shadow is just constantly boosting and Perfect Chaos 2nd phase was NOT just hit him once.
3. Red rings…again. Seriously, I had a really BAD time with them in Colors.
4. Time eater is DUMB on the final battle, while in all the story he was a REAL BOSS.
5. Modern super sonic. Back in colors, he had infinite boost without the use of more than 1 ring in a second!
Also, there is some stuff in the 3DS version that I dont like:
1) Level design
2) No Unleashed levels
3) No classic super sonic in stages (I DONT CARE ABOUT MODERN)
4) No characters such as Knuckles or Amy
5) Classic Homing attack is not optional here
6) Stomp is learned later in the game
In conclusion, NONE of the versions is perfect! Anyway, WHAT A LONG COMENTARY! XD
lol sry, meant to say “comment” and something I left there: The version Im getting is the 3DS one. It is my only option.
The rival battles really are boost to win.
This is fucking horrible! I feel absolutely insulted!
I’m sorry, but after seeing multiple videos, I’m perfectly convinced that Dimps has no idea what the fuck they’re doing anymore. This game is a combination of not only pure laziness, but also a complete lack of any talent, creativity, or ANYTHING that a human being with a decent amount of intelligence can produce.
It’s one thing when both Sonics have flawed physics (Modern Sonic even more so, which is strange because Modern Sonic shares the same perspective AND engine as Classic Sonic), but this goes BEYOND flawed.
Classic Sonic’s first three levels are all copy-and-pasted with physics that don’t match the levels. Then, through some asspull of a plot point, Classic Sonic learns a homing attack that is PERMANENTLY STUCK TO HIS MOVESET AND CAN’T BE TURNED OFF for future levels that suffers from nearly every flaw of Sonic 4 Episode 1: Boring, linear level design with a fuckton of homing attack chains above bottomless pits and dash pads that play the game for you.
Modern Sonic is nothing but a linear boost fest. I know that sounds weird from someone who likes both of the Rush titles, but THIS is almost literally boost to win. The only times when you’re not boosting to win is when you’re participating in a boring homing attack chain and uninspired quicktime events. Barely any enemies on the screen, and when they are, they’re right in your path because the developers expect you to be boosting all of the time. At least the Rush games had lots of springs, a trick system, and use of two screens that made it exhilerating to play, but this looks fucking boring.
Graphics are horrible. I’m almost convinced that this game is the WORST looking 3DS game so far. While Super Mario 3D land and a new Resident Evil game utilizes full 3D gameplay and looks just as good as a Gamecube or even a Wii title, Sonic Generations 3DS is a strictly 2D game with ugly bland backgrounds with a foreground that looks like they took the original sprites and stretched it. Emerald Coast looks ESPECIALLY bad; nothing but wooden boards
The Rival boss fights are ALL modern Sonic and ALL literally boost to win. There’s no difference between Metal Sonic, Shadow, and Silver, especially when you can simply boost and they’ll never attack you. I haven’t looked at any other boss, but considering that you can hit the Big Arm five times before it even moves, I’m not hoping for anything better.
Hell, not even the music can save this game. Literally, the ONLY original track that’s good is the Big Arm boss fight music. It’s fucking OC Remix tier. However, everything else is either shared between the console version, literally the original tracks to the respective levels, or fucking horrible. The modern remixes of Radical Highway and Tropical Resort makes me sick.
…..holy shit…I’m at a loss for words. Who the fuck is Dimps trying to appeal to? Classic Purists? They’ll play the first three levels of Classic Sonic before realizing that they’re better off playing the original games. People who like Sonic Rush? They’ll get bored quickly of this game and be ashamed for wasting a huge sum of their money on getting the game brand new. Platforming fans? There’s BARELY any platforming involved, so they’ll get bored as fuck and regret paying full price for it. Twelve-year-old faggots who’ll buy anything with Sonic’s fucking face on it? Probably, I mean, that’s the ONLY people that’ll find any kind of appeal in this shit.
Even if you pretend the console version doesn’t exist, this is bad. It’s absolutely embarassing; I feel insulted as a decent human being for knowing that a piece of shit like this exists.
Sonic 4 Episode 2, 3, or god knows how many sequels will SUCK ASS. No, it will SUCK ASS and nothing will change my mind. My optimism and hope for a better and proper installment has fluctuated as time went on, but after seeing how bad this game is, I’m perfectly convinced that Dimps can’t make a good Sonic 4 or EVEN A GOOD SONIC GAME even if they tried. Absolutely TALENTLESS! And I KNOW for a fact that anyone reading this will immediately type “TROLL! GTFO!!111″ and you know what: Go ahead. Go ahead and prove just how much of a fucking uninspired population of sheep you are. Go ahead and continue being the absolute downfall of the entire franchise simply because Sega and Dimps knows that they can release mediocre platformers that advertise “Classic Gameplay” and you and the shitload of dumbass critics will eat up and love simply because it’s 2D and better than autrocities like Sonic 06. You, Dimps, Sonic Team, and Sega should be fucking ashamed of themselves.
This is all krazeeKidd102, thanks.
We need critic opinions.
We need sonic fighting with mario again and create a perfect platform sonic game.
We need taxman work (programer) and naoto oshima (director aka sonic cd).
Sonic Colors Wii/DS and Generations is only good platform games. We need a revolutionary and epic new sonic game, without blabalbla historyboard or existence of horrible adventure series.
We need root sonic. Platform, exploration, pinball physics and awesome creativity in stages.
@krazeeKidd102 i wasn’t gonna respond to this post, but im sick of your self-righteous bullshit. I’m not gonna call you a troll, but i will call you a fucking obsessed little crybaby that didnt get his way. You can’t judge a game until you have it, and the only videos out there are 30-second trailers and non-direct playthroughs, wait till the game is out, get it, and then bitch. I’m sick of your bitterness, and be fucking thankful this game is even being made for the 3ds. And judging the rest of a series (that doesn’t exist yet) because of 2 games is fucking ignorant, and you know it. The music remixes are fine, no where near what your bitching about (excluding modern radical highway, that one is just retarded). And saying a company doesnt know what they’re doing when you clearly dont know the effort that goes behind making games is stupid. Oh and one last thing. DONT LIKE THE HOMING ATTACK? DONT USE IT! So 1 route in the level is designed for the homing attack. DONT TAKE IT. If it’s that much of a sin, then why do you bother even posting your whiny bullshit here? I know someone will throw the “ITS MY OPINION” horseshit, but when you do nonstop complaining, it gets irritating. Fast. After it comes out, bitch about it, i wont care. But you’re bitching about gameplay when you dont have it in your hands, which is stupid.
Yeah, I’m not impressed with the implementation of Classic’s homing attack.
BUT, he doesn’t get it until after the classic era, and, think about it, after Mushroom Hill Classic has never even been in these levels before, so it makes slightly more sense to add in a move he didn’t know originally.
Still a Day 1 buy for me. (Don’t have much of a choice, EB Games don’t give back your $10 pre-order-down-payment if you cancel a pre-order here in NZ).
@everyonewhoseemstohatethisversion
DON’T FUCKING BUY IT THEN.
IF DIMPS WANTS YOUR MONEY AND THIS DOESN’T SELL, MAYBE THEY’LL TRY HARDER NEXT TIME.
The Homming Attack in 2D games (in 3D homming attack is good and necessary), level design, modern stages and music remix is horrible in 3DS.
In HD version, the level design is so perfect, modern stage is good and good music remix.
@darkgomugomu
um, no. You see, there’s exists such a thing called “Judge what a game will be like from released gameplay footage”. That’s what I’m doing. I’m only being agitated because I feel that the next few years of Sonic the Hedgehog is nothing but watching hyped up trainwrecks after hyped up trainwrecks. Hell, if everyone really had to buy a video game to be entitled to what they feel about the game, then reviews wouldn’t exist in the first place.
And of course I’m never going to resort to the “IT’S MY OPINION” horseshit. Everything I said was pure fact, so I never needed to state my opinions in the first place.
@Darkgomugomu Yah, Im with you! You cant judge a game if you did not even played it! I remember when I called Sonic Colors DS the “crappy version”. And what happened? I NOW HAVE COLORS DS! Believe me, I had a more fun experience with the DS version than the Wii one. Same happened with Sonic 4.
@krazeeKid102
Dimps has fallen so fucking hard, its not even funny and thus, I agree.
@Raymanfan1
I rather not hand over my hard-earned money to a lazy developer like Dimps and I DOUBT they’ll even try anymore. They’ve failed us with S4 and again with Generations 3DS. Sega should just fire the dumbasses.
@darkgomugomu
Okay. Now you’re just as bad as him. He’s not some whiner I mean granted some of his points are wrong (Dimps is only just starting out on the 3DS with the graphics), but he’s just upset that Dimps is being their usual self and not putting in the hundred percent. And I can understand where he’s coming from. Sonic may have a great game here but he hasn’t had the best track record and Dimps’ development and effort has been decreasing as the Colors port shows. That said this game does have new levels instead of the same from the console, has online multiplayer and the final boss looks easier. And doesn’t have allies shouting things you already know so points there.
And really, your response to him is juvenile in itself. You really shouldn’t have responded yourself like this as you are no better than he is in your own rants and insults. Let fanboys be fanboys. They may spew crap sometimes but they need some way to let off steam. Ignore them and get on with your own life. Stop caring.
Also, Dimps seems to went downhill with their team. I mean, i don’t see any good release in time, just edits of previous titles.
XHog Posted…
Let fanboys spew crap. Stop caring.
Hit the nail on the head.
All I know is that I’m getting the game, and that I will reserve my judgement on DIMPS’s effort, and the game itself, until after I’ve played it.
AND I DON’T GIVE A FUCK WHAT ANYONE ELSE THINKS.
Fanbases are pretty much made for trolls and bitching. Accept it, move on, get a life.
@QuietGuy92:
So Sonic Team makes Sonic 06 and the Storybook series and be forgiven, but DIMPS makes a decent game and a game you haven’t played yet and they should be fired?
Freaking double standard.
Lovin’ the biased hate against Dimps here <3
@darkgomugomu
So much win.
This is for those trying to defend the 3DS version:
Firstly i’m a big Sonic fan, but even I have to admit it the 3DS version is dissapointing and it pains me to say that, but the reality is that DIMPS MADE SOME STUPID CHOICES.
Those who keep saying “…but they are just getting used to the 3DS power” need to look at the atcual 3D bosses, including Biolizard which is an exact copy off his battle in Sonic Adventure 2 and tell me why they could do 3D bosses, but not 3D Modern Sonic gameplay as the whole “getting used to the 3DS power” argument failed when they did 3D gameplay for the Time Eater as that proves they could have done 3D Modern Sonic gameplay if they wanted to, BUT CHOSE NOT TO!!
Those saying “…but they had less time to make this game”, if that was the case they could have pushed the release date back… BUT THEY CHOSE NOT TO.
Those saying “…but you’re not forced to use classic Sonics HA” need to look at the video as it FORCES YOU TO USE HA as badniks are over gaps and some springs on the wall require you to use HA to use them, so basically this unnecessary addition blurs the line between classic and modern Sonics even more which ruins the whole idea of the game as the only diffrence seems to be a diffrent Sonic sprites and diffrent ways of dashing and why was HA added… BECAUSE THEY CHOSE TO.
I’m sorry folks, but Dimps/Sega deserve every negative response that they get about the 3DS version as all the above excuses no longer apply and the only two explations that I can think of are, either they rushed this game (in which case why did they not push the date back?) or they are just to lazy (copying the 1st 3 levels and making the rest like Sonic 4), either way this is a half-hearted effort from Sega/Dimps
So much negativity! I personally am going to enjoy this game, just as I did with the Advance trilogy, the Rush series, Colors DS, and yes, even Sonic 4.
@krazeeKidd102
Do you keep a blog or something? ‘Cause reading that made me smile. I’ll be honest, any remaining faith I had in the 3DS version was shot to shit when I checked out the Rival ‘battles’ and the other crap that pretty much speaks for itself. I can’t say anything else since you pretty much summed it up for me.
The only thing I find appealing is some of the music tracks. Lovin’ the HELL out of Classic Sonic’s Radical Highway! And like you said; Big Arm music? Fuckin’ A!
So much conflict here such is the Sonic fanbase.
Perhaps I will wait a while for a price drop until I buy this one. I personally like all the classic stages (except for Emerald Coast). I also like modern Sonic in most stages except Green Hill Zone, Casino Night Zone, and Emerald Coast. The graphics look okay in most zones except for Emerald Coast. I dislike the fact that full cutscenes are not included despite the fact that I am sure they can fit it on the 3DS cartridge (3DS cartridges are available in 2GB size and 4GB, even if Sega chose the 2 GB ones they should still be able to fit it because GameCube disks were only 1.5 GB and they held larger games with their cutscenes). I like the special stages. Things like homing attack do not bother me (in fact I do like the homing attack), but looking at the game through fresh eyes I notice that it is short and a tad too easy, which is why I will wait for a price drop.
I have just been thinking that Sega could have kept production costs down and satisfied Nintendo buyers at the same time by just announcing a port of Sonic Generations HD for the Wii U, because the Wii U already has enough power to run the game and Nintendo has stated that people do not have to use the new touch controller, so a direct port would be possible. I will be picking up a Wii U in the future and I would have been happier with an HD port of the PS3/X360 version on that console then this version. However, this version turned out okay as well.
Wow you guys are really going out of your way to make this game look THAT bad. I can understand someone being entitled to their own opinion, but JEEZ lighten up! It’s really not that bad, actually I don’t think it’s bad at all. I like what I see so far.
Also about the HA for Classic Sonic, ok you can’t remove it, but you DON’T have to use it which makes it OPTIONAL! (watch the videos again, the gaps are close enough for Classic Sonic to pull it off with a just the bounce attack).
@DonnyKD
Look like someone’s butthurt cause of I’m bashing an inferior port of a good game.
@Jmack
You have to understand that Dimps could’ve done a LOT better with the 3DS version.
@QuietGuy92
OH NO NO NO don’t get me wrong…I’m an optomist, but I never said they couldn’t do better (I aint a blind fanboy, I’ve been here since the beginning). What’s on the 3DS version is fine with me just like the console versions. But to be honest they couldve done A WHOLE LOT better with both versions of the game, neither one is perfect by any means.
