Community Mellows Out toward Classic Sonic Upgrade
Our latest TSSZ News @Issue poll was the most voted on in a good while. We asked if it was OK for classic Sonic to have a homing attack in Sonic Generations–even if it was optional–and more than 1,500 individuals responded.
The poll show an overwhelming majority who indicated it is. Some 82 percent of respondents said it was OK for classic Sonic to have the modern ability. Just 12 percent voted no. Six percent were unsure.
Interestingly, that trend held despite some video evidence over the weekend which indicated the homing attack may become a requirement later down the line in Sonic Generations for the Nintendo 3DS. There was no sudden swing in our poll one way or the other as many community forums balked at the idea.
A new poll is now available to vote on. The above poll results can be discussed below in the comments.

*FIRST!
Everyone = stfu ricardo no one cares.
I just had to get that out of my system
Sonic Generations 3DS version is officially out so I can judge it today
Yeah. Apparently, I have played the Classic SOnic stages and I have gotten too use to a homing attack in a 2D Sonic game to enjoy it.
Well, even if it’s required for the 3DS i don’t care xD. I can play splash hill zone in the background of green hill zone, do homing attacks, and just maybe, do a physic glitch if it’s possible :3. Admit it… that’s what we all did on green hill zone for the PS3/XBOX.
@Nuzumaki90, it doesn’t come out till tomorrow(Unless they already have it where your at). Just like the Sonic Generations Demo, just because they said October whatever, and that it was already whatever where you live in, doesn’t mean it was coming yet. For some reason,I think SEGA follows California’s time…idk.
I waited to voice my opinion on the poll until the results came through. I personally don’t like classic Sonic honing the homing attack from a conceptual stand-point. Though, Sega did play it smart the way the homing attack for classic Sonic was implemented in the console/PC iterations of Sonic Generations. Not only is it completely optional, but it is also a swappable skill requiring most of all the skill points to equip. I’m not looking through nostalgia goggles or closemindedly huddled up under my bed muttering to myself when I say this: I just don’t see why classic Sonic needs it.
I’ve yet to see any speed runners utilize it for the classic Sonic stages, in my opinion it kills the momentum and slows down the pace of the game, and it just doesn’t ‘feel’ right for him to have it, especially after the humorous cutscene at the end of the game(not being specific due to minor spoilers). On the plus side, it allows the player to not have to worry which Sonic they’re using, as this seemed to be a major complaint for most reviewers getting the two mixed up.
I respect anyone else’s opinion on the matter, but I’m having a blast playing the classic Sonic stages without that ability, thanks.
@Ricardo My gamestop already had them stocked when I went to buy Super Mario 3D Land. I couldn’t buy it cuz the lady there said it was not officially released. And Sonic Generations (console) came out the day it was supposed to where I live? My gamestop even had a Midnight Launch Party for it and Uncharted.
Just because SEGA follows a certain time (california for example), doesn’t mean they are gonna release the game as soon as clocks in California hit after midnight.
@Nuzumaki – No, I know SEGA doesn’t follow up California’s 12:00 pm, but remember on TSS when the 23rd Demo and October 15 demo was out on its date, but wasn’t on the Marketplace/PSN? All the comments where like
“WTF SEGA, its already 23rd, where’s my demo??”
“I’ve been waiting since midnight, and its still not here D:
“Etc.”
I think you get what I mean
Anyway, you should do a playthrough of Gen 3ds!
@IceHedge – I’m pretty sure the homing attack was supposed to be a big helper for the new/not good at playing Sonic games Sonic fans ;P
I’m more interested in the results of the next poll. If ‘watered-down’ just means non-HD, then I say Yes, give me Sonic GenerWiitions!
these results crack me up. it appears on the 3ds and everyone cries about it but it all of a sudden pops up in the console version ( yeah its optional but it doesn’t matter its still there) and everyone is ok with it.
@ Raymanfan: maybe a water down version but with different levels like a sonic cd and sonic 3 level to fill the void of not having a proper stage. Big Arm still counts as a rep in my book though
Generations HD: no problems with the classic HA cause its only useful for those who REALLY suck at playing the classic sections.
Generations 3DS: There’s a problem cause it’s actually a significant gameplay mechanic that you can use right from the get go and throughout the whole thing. Not only it reminds me of the failure that was Sonic 4, but classic Sonic is just empty, shallow fanservice, nothing more than an alternate skin for modern Sonic.
Sonic Team succeeded while Dimps completely dissolved in what makes classic Sonic special.
stfu ricardo no one cares
XD loljk I really don’t care about Classic Sonic having it!
@Tim it does matter that it’s optional, you can completely avoid using the homing attack on the console version and besides the Homing attack is the last upgrade that you get for classic sonic and you’ve already beaten the game without using it. while on the 3DS version you actually need the homing attack for certain parts of levels and to complete the game. That’s why everyone let the homing attack slide on the console version
@SonicGo! – D: *cries like a baby for 2 minutes. XD jk at least you said it!
I don’t really care about using the homing attack. All it does is make things easier. It’s also very likely that parts of Generations 3DS that “require” the homing attack (like the beginning of classic Radical Highway) can be passed without it with some skill.
. Should arrive sometime in the next week.
Ordered Generations 3DS on Amazon today
@QuietGuy92:
Do you have some inane hatred for DIMPS that clouds your judgement of games or some crap? I mean freaking really, everything you say is just ignorance.
Homing attack for classic AND modern Sonic is kind of annoying in Generations. That momentum killing air dash just SCREAMS poor design. I much prefer the air dash in Sonic Colors. Hell, even the Adventure air dash wasn’t this awkward.
Conceptually, it’s a tad irksome… but for a one-shot, it’s tolerable. Especially given the way it was even integrated into the story somewhat. Kind of cute
Gameplay-wise it was poorly implemented and totally breaks classic Sonic’s flow, but since it’s just an optional gimmick I can’t complain. More (legitimately optional) options are always nice to screw around with.
@Donny
Maybe you should borrow somebody’s dictionary, because there’s nothing at all ignorant about anything QuietGuy just said. He’s got VERY valid points, and the only one you’ve really got seems very heavily based on your own blindly positive bias.
@ChaoticFox:
lol sure he does, ooooo, Classic now has a homing attack and Modern’s in 2D, suddenly they’re SOOOOOO similar to the point of being the same, right? Despite Modern having, let’s see, boost, slide, light speed dash, stomp, ALL AROUND DIFFERENT LEVEL DESIGN… yeah, they’re totally the same.
Well DUH it’s okay becuase, at least for the Classic stages as far as I know, you don’t have to use it. Should be easy since they’re replicas of the original classic stages and going through the stages should make you feel like playing it the way you did back in the day.
If you have self-control issues with simply not double-jumping that’s nobody else’s fault.
Concept-wise I agree that it doesn’t make sense for Classic Sonic to have it and I wouldn’t have given it to him. But they did give it to him so there’s nothing I can do about it. Doesn’t mean that it’ll ruin the gameplay. If anything I’ll be the one ruining the gameplay for myself. Besides, I don’t mind others having their opinions, doesn’t make their reasoning any less silly, but if they want to sulk over something rather than looking on the bright side then that’s their own choice. I choose to either not use it or embrace it as a little extra interactive gameplay while it’s there instead of being a baby over it. lol
I don’t know if a watered down version of Generations for Wii would be a good idea. If Unleashed had to skip out on some areas, imagine what we might miss with a Wii port. And if they have to do that, they might even drop another character or so like they did with Big (which is fine with me if they drop Charmy, sorry Charmy fans).
How this could remind anyone of Sonic 4 I’m not sure, since Sonic 4′s issue were the inaccurate physics, and this game looks to have way more accurate physics. And not only that but these were physics that you could still play with and have fun with and didn’t really destroy the gameplay all that much but merely made it feel a bit off to those who played the originals. So some ppl were pickier than others, but for the most part it was a good game and considered one. If that’s a failure than how some of these other games are a success I don’t quite understand. lol (It’s just like when SA1 and SA2 were praised for so many years, now if you say you liked those games ppl call you an Adventure fanboy. Or how ppl praised Unleashed and then criticized gameplay for being different and diverse, then praised the day stages which caused the influence of Sonic Colors before panning the day stages. The praising Colors, based on those day stages, and later when Generations comes it IT is somehow still called by many “Finally! A good Sonic game!” as if Colors didn’t do the job. In fact, I’ve heard some ppl call Colors boring)
Yeah. How does anyone here really know what a good and what a bad Sonic game is when they’re apparently so similar and sometimes the same games merely with status-changes over time. Doesn’t really seem like the negative side of the online fanbase really knows their stuff. And then somehow they think they know more about the series than the guys who actually make it. “I understand your concept better than you do without any confirmation because that was my perspective of it as a kid despite you actually working with the originals on the originals and coming up with a lot of the ideas.” lol
Anyhoo…. yeah… Classic Homing attack. Who cares? lol For your own sake, get over it.
So we went from green eyes to homing attack…..makes you wonder what the next complaint will be. This should be good.
Idk the Homing Attack seems useful for some parts of the game. A MAJOR role the Classic Homing attack was used in was Classic Radical Highway. You seen Badnik chains everywhere so yea.
Ill be picking up Sonic Generations 3DS today at about 2:00 3:00 to give you the Multiplayer stages since it comes out today the 22nd.
EVEN IF it’s optional? You realize that the only reason that it’s okay is BECAUSE it’s optional, right?
@Shade – There are no new multiplaayer stages. On TSS, they showed us screenshots of multiplayer, and they were only based on the 7 stages. :/ SEGA tricked us again xD Anyway, if there were different levels, don’t you think someone would’ve put them on on Youtube already? (Thigolf has shown us everything)…
I can’t really answer the current poll. Watered down in what ways? Graphically, that’s okay. Gameplay and content? No way. Sonic Colors shows that you CAN have a game that plays like Unleashed on the Wii while having it look impressive.
@ChaoticFox
Donny’s just like any other SonicFag (a fan who’ll buy any game with Sonic’s face on it, even if it sucks donkey dick and suffers a bitch-fit if anyone makes a valid criticism on what they don’t like in that particular game).
And thanks for agreeing.
I never really minded.
For those who said no on the new poll doesn’t realize that this could help the game sell better because everyone in world own s a wii
The “no Homing Attack! Ever!” group seems larger because they’re the most vocal.
SO we gotta be even more vocal than the No Homing Attack, Period group.
