It Could Be Anything…But…
An active job posting Sega of America has on its website received a fair bit of attention when Segabits, Sonic Stadium and others picked up word of it from Gamerzines over the weekend.
The description is vague enough, complete with corporate-speak one would expect from any job posting. But here’s the line that has caused so many alarm bells to ring in the days since discovery:
Wholly responsible for the project schedule, the budget, and the timely delivery of a high quality product based on a reimagining of one of Sega’s most beloved IP’s.
Sega has a treasure trove of IPs at its disposal, so this could be anything. But given how its flagship property, Sonic the Hedgehog, has been tinkered with so much in recent years, it has led many to wonder if Sonic will undergo yet another of those “reimaginings.” What do you think? Will Sonic soon see another transformation, or do you think Sega is planning something else. Tell us below in the comments.

If it’s Jet Set Radio, I just might shed a tear. I’d love to see Billy Hatcher as well, but it’s probably not “beloved” enough. I got a feeling it might be Chu Chu Rocket, though. So long as it’s not NiGHTS….
Could be it’s a comeback of a series not seen in forever. Ristar? Streets of Rage? Comix Zone?
I may sound really stupid for saying this, but what is an IP? I’ve heard it so many times :/
Anyway, SEGA said re-imagining, not making a new game, bu who really knows…that “line” means a lot of things.

Could it be Alex Kidd? I have a feeling that they are going to reimagine that franchise….
My guesses could be Jet Set Radio, Ristar, Streets of Rage, or Billy Hatcher.
As long as Sega of America gives either game to a very compentent developer (like Griptonite Games with Shinobi 3DS) and has NOTHING to do with Sonic (who’s just gotten good again), I’m cool.

Umm, I don’t think SEGA will bring back a popular franchise of their own, until SEGA makes their next console. A new SEGA console would sell with Alex Kidd, Shenmue, Ristar, Jet Set Radio, SONIC, Space Channel 5, Super Monkey Ball, etc!
@ Ricardo: I sorry but I really don’t want Sega to go back to consoles since Sonic is my only favorite IP from them I wouldn’t want to buy a console just for his games.

@Timothy – Same here, I actually don’t wanna buy a SEGA console, just to play Sonic games. I bought a Nintendo Wii and 3ds just because I wanna play mario. Then I buy an xbox or ps3 for the hardcore games
I really hate how its seperated. One day I do believe SEGA will have enogh money to get back in the console business, and even if it fails, that SEGA should still have lots of money to stand as the proud company they are now(yes that is a lot of money.) I just don’t wanna buy a whole new console, soely for the purpose of one franchise. Doing it for Mario is enough, but for another?? I’m not so sure.
Doesn’t Wonder Boy belong to Sega? Haven’t seen a new Wonder Boy game in forever. But I agree with the others, Alex Kidd or Jet Set Radio sound plausible. I’d love a new Ristar game, but I dunno if a single game IP could be called “beloved” in a broad mass consumer way.
I don’t think that it’ll be Wonder Boy, or Alex Kidd, etc., if only because those franchises have been gone for a long time, and to bring them back would be to “revive” them, not “reimagine” them.

Sonic doesn’t sell anymore. Even with amazing games like Colors and Generations, the hole SEGA dug with Sonic’s pre-Colors 3D outings is just too deep to climb out of (just look at those abysmal sales), so it’s entirely possible SEGA is going to resort to another pseudo-reboot.
I just hope it’s not Sonic… SEGA would be risking themselves way too much…

Considering what Generations was up against (Skyrim, Halo CE: Anniverasry, generic gunplay 3, Uncharted 3, Batman, Skyward Sword, Mario 3D, Assassin’s Creed, AND Mario & Sonic), I think it’s sales were better than “abysmal”. We all know it would have done better with some Wii support though. At any rate, Sonic’s doing fine, it’s probably NiGHTS (they wouldn’t dare) or Alex Kidd or something.
I’m hoping Sega’s finally going to do Streets of Rages 4 or Jet Set International. Actually, I would love to see how they’ll do Alex Kidd considering how much potential that game seems to have with today’s youn– (realizes the younger generations is more into FPS, violent, gory video games) ……….. I keep forgetting how much has changed since the 90′s. Well, perhaps maybe Ristar could get a re-imagining. Let’s just hope it’s going to be nothing like that Golden Axe game they tried so long ago.

If they reimaging Sonic, I hope he just looks more realistic and the games have some sort of a SA2 story. Non of this Sonic Colors and Generations crap storys.
@ Da Boss: That’s highly unlikely plus decisions like those are part of what lead to the negative reception of Sonic games that went the “realistic and serious” approach. It’s just not the right style for Sonic.
Of course this doesn’t apply to Sonic, notice how it’s a job at Sega of America. Japan would never let America touch Sonic even if Japan doesn’t even like Sonic back and they come up with a shit ton of awful ideas.
So try again.
I would want a new NiGHTS. Journey of Dreams just did not cut it. Unfortunately, that wouldn’t be fair for other Sega fans. A new Jet Set would be pretty effing cool.

@Timothy – Sorry, I should have re-worded myself right. I also bought a Wii and 3ds so I could play also Sonic, Kirby, smash bros, pokemon, and more. I just meant that my main reason was because of Mario ^^. I am also planning on getting the Wii U. On release date? Hell no, there probably won’t be any good games. I’ll probably wait until 2013 to get a Wii U. Ill get the 720 later xP

Is anyone considering that it might just be a side branch of games or such for an IP, like how Sonic has all these companies doing different things with Sonic that (mostly) doesn’t affect the main games (Sonic Rivals, Sonic Rush, Mario and Sonic)? If it is Sonic, I’m hoping it’s someone considerate of this generation of consoles that they hire, and hopefully s/he has some refreshing (though not necessarily new or old) ideas that they add to the series, ya know what I mean?
In the event that it isn’t Sonic, I’m hoping it’s for Space Channel 5. I love those games and am really looking forward to seeing it move into this generation (though I hope we don’t have to buy any add-ons in order to just play the game like a Kinect or WiiMotion Plus).
As much as I would love it to be Channel 5 or NiGHTS, I think both of those are very unlikely. Both their creators left SEGA and I’m not sure how copyrights for those two games work.
But yeah. I’d love a new Channel 5 and a new NiGHTS DONE RIGHT.
I’m going to call it here, folks. NiGHTS, Samba, or Space Channel 5. It’ll be one of those 3, I’m fairly certain.

Sonic Generations 3DS review came in from Game Informer and not looking good but this IS Game Informer were talking about.
@ Soniclegends: The reviewer is seems to have been thrown to review this game by such comments as
” previous sonic games on the 3DS” and I love this line ” 25 years of Sonic” was did I some how miss 5 years of sonic games?
As I’ve said before, I’m all for rebooting Sonic. With Sonic Generations doing so well, perhaps it’s a good note for Modern Sonic to go out on. However, a radical change to the series may not do so well. Sonic is such an iconic character that tampering with his look too much may throw the fanbase into a frenzy (although even the most insignificant things in the past have done the same). Anyway, in the end it’s all about keeping the series fresh. As long as they go with an “Adventure-style reboot” and not a “Sonic 2006-style reboot” I’m all for it….
My guess would be something that we’ve seen or almost seen in Sega Superstars series.

I rather they stick to 2 different universes, ala Generations. Rethink Sonic 4 with this Generations gameplay and models. Then for modern, keep him the same but darker.
It sounds like they’re wanting a whole new design…which worries me.
I’d rather not have a new NiGHTS game. Journey of Dreams was okay but still…

If they want to make a new design for Sonic, I’d say mix the best of Classic (short and round body) with the best of Modern (green eyes).
That way, it’ll please everyone who likes both designs (like me).
Iizuka did say they wanted to start a new adventure with Sonic, of course…..
And if the Dimensions rumor is true, it’s likely that rebooting Sonic with help from another IP doesn’t sound far fetched.
I kinda hope it’s Jet Set Radio that’s being rebooted, though.

Hrmh, I honestly can’t see how they can change him…. Unless you’re giving him clothes. I would be okay with it, but I don’t see why they’d want to waste time remakimg Sonic.
