Few Signs of Hope Before Black Friday

The week 3 estimates from independent website VGChartz.com have been published, and that means there’s some new data to share to help us see how Sonic Generations is faring.  Before going any further, let’s be clear that the numbers are unofficial, and the latest data is referencing the week of November 13th, which is the week before the Black Friday shopping day.

It’s a good thing that’s the case, too, because little promise was seen in the estimates.  On the XBOX 360, Generations is estimated to have some just 11,382 units in North America and 6,072 in Europe.  Those are week to week declines of more than 43 and 27 percent, respectively.

On the domestic side, news for the PS3 version was more alarming.  Just 6,684 units were estimated sold the week of the 13th in North America.  That is a decline of more than 53 percent from week 2 estimates.  To put it in further perspective, that week number is just over a tenth of what the launch week estimates were on the PS3.

Here’s the glimmer of hope: VGChartz estimates European PS3 sales for Generations went up in week 3.  The website estimates 11,080 units combined sold in those territories.  That’s up significantly, more than 40 percent from week 2 estimates.

In Europe, those numbers are almost certain to go up when week 4 estimates–the Black Friday numbers–are released, considering that’s exactly what happened in the UK.  Plenty of US consumers bought game consoles during Black Friday, so we will see once those estimates are released whether Generations can stop the bleeding domestically.  We should also see in the next wave how the 3DS version fared in its launch week.  Those numbers will be afforded here once we learn of them.
