The Holiday Rush is On

We have some good guidance to pass along when it comes to Sonic Generations sales.  New, unofficial numbers are in from the website VGChartz.com, and they show that on the HD home consoles, at least, the game continued its positive momentum from the week of Black Friday.  In fact, if this data is even close to accurate and continues through December, Generations should easily be a million seller by the end of the year.

VGChartz estimates 35,222 copies of the game were sold last week in North America for XBOX 360.  The website estimates another 22,936 copies were sold across Europe and Australia for the same system.  Those are increases of 108 and almost 60 percent from the previous week, respectively.  On the PS3, the margins were even better.  31,215 copies of the game were sold for the system in North America, with another 31,070 in Europe and Australia.  Those are week to week increases of 141 and 58 percent, respectively.

The news, unfortunately, is not so promising on the 3DS side, where that edition tanked in its first full week of sale in North America, and only showed a modest increase abroad.  VGChartz estimates just 14,879 units sold in North America, a more than 78 percent drop from launch week.  Europe and Australian sales rose to 16,365 for the week, up a somewhat tempered 44 percent from the previous week, when it didn’t have the luxury of a full week on store shelves.

VGChartz now estimates between the HD consoles, the 3DS, and the physical PC port, a bit under three quarters of a millon copies of Generations have sold worldwide to date.  For North America, if you prefer something more official, we will have to see if the game ranks on the NPD charts for November.  Those numbers will be out this evening.  However, given the volume of AAA titles released in November, while the above estimates are good, they may not be good enough for NPD to rank Generations a top seller.
