Tomorrow for XBLA, EU PSN, iOS; Later for Other Platforms
In most instances, Sega again waited until the 11th hour to make matters official for Sonic CD‘s re-release.
We have a press release below, followed by a trailer. In a nutshell, gamers with an XBOX 360 everywhere and a Playstation 3 in Europe can get the game tomorrow for an equivalent price point of $5. About as much holds true for those with iOS devices, where the game can be downloaded from the App Store for $4.99 or the equivalent. Next week, the game will come to the US Playstation Network on the 20th, next Tuesday. Those with an Android or Windows Phone 7 device will have to wait until early next year. There was no guidance given for the planned Steam release.
You can get a better idea of prices in your region below, then take a look at how the game shapes up in the RSDK via Sega Europe’s launch trailer.
SEGA Europe Ltd. and SEGA of America, Inc. today announced that fan favourite Sonic CD will be released on multiple platforms from tomorrow. Relive the story of the 1993 original, which sees Dr. Eggman again, attempting to take control of time by stealing the Time Stones from Little Planet. Sonic must speed through levels and travel through time whilst fending off Eggman’s robots to recover the Time Stones and save the smitten young hedgehog, Amy Rose.
The revamped version Sonic CD will include the original Japanese and US soundtracks as requested by the fans, and, for the first time, the ability to play the game as Sonic’s best friend Tails, unlockable byElectronic Theatre Image clearing the game for the first time. Sonic CD also features the first appearance of Metal Sonic, one of Sonic’s most enduring nemesis.
“Sonic’s 20th Anniversary has been a banner year for him – as well as for everyone at SEGA,” said Haruki Satomi, Senior Vice President of Digital Business at SEGA of America. “Gamers around the world are rediscovering their love of Sonic through his adventures, new and old. Whether you’re a long-time hedgehog aficionado looking to enjoy a favourite moment from Sonic’s past, or a brand-new player who wants to join in on the fun, there’s no better place to start than with one of Sonic’s most celebrated games, Sonic CD.”
Sonic CD will be available tomorrow from Xbox LIVE Arcade for the Xbox 360, priced at 400 Microsoft Points, the PlayStation Network in Europe for $5.00/£3.59/€4.49 /AUD$6.25 and iPhone, iPod touch, iPad for $4.99/AUD$5.49/Euro $3.99/UK £2.99. Sonic CD will be released on the PlayStation Network in America on 20th December and for Android and Windows Phone 7 devices in the New Year.

Oh, if only this would be released on PSP as well, would totally make my day. Anyway, hopefully the Steam release will roll out soon, can’t wait. =3
Good its 400 Points now please pleaaase Sega give us a complete Sonic 3&K with the same treatment as this release
Good, I’m off tomorrow! And I don’t have to buy a points card.
Now re-relase SA2(B) on PSN and XBLA and I’ll be happy. No doubt SEGA is going to do this. They’ve been putting out some DC Roms from Rom-sites. One of them was SA2. They did the same when SA1 was re-relased.
If only I were getting an iPhone sooner…
Does anyone know if there are $5 Xbox Live points cards for sale?
lol the trailer says ‘rebuilt for a whole new generation’, more like ‘rebuilt BY a whole new generation’. They better give Taxman his due for bringing this gaming gem to the present in ways that Sega proved they never could.
anyone noticed that future signpost at the end is different than the one in cd?
SCD’s coming out next week on US PSN? Sweet.
@AJBSONIC
“The trailer says “rebuilt for a whole new generation”, more like ‘”rebuilt BY a whole new generation”. They better give Taxman his due for bringing this gaming gem to the present in ways that Sega proved they never could.”
Amen to that.
episode 2 is going to have time travel. im calling it
Wow, Merry Christmas, Sega! <3
I never would have expected this price point. Ever. I was gearing up to pay at LEAST 15. Five bucks feels like a goddamn present!
Capcom always charges prices like 15 or 20, Sega is giving it as a present for the fans charging only 5 bucks
Excellent I can download it tomorrow. Can’t wait.
Wait. $5 is around £3.20 for my country. Wow, that’s a LOT cheaper than I expected. I’m definately getting this for my PS3.
EDIT: I meant to say £3.50.
great now i need to use my friends euro account again.
>Five dollars
Holy fuck this is beyond generous. We <3 u SEGA
Should Sonic 3&K (the full 14 levels, chaos and master emeralds) get the same treatment as Sonic CD? I think it deserves it.
Fantastic job SEGA and ‘the taxman’. I imagine the retro engine technology could be used to enhance many classic games, Sonic and non Sonic.
$5? YAYYYYYYYY! Next week? BOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
$5???? My God, what a fantastically low price!! Colour me pleasantly surprised =)
HELL YHE
alright, i officially forgive SEGA for not giving the US the Generations collectors edition.
Wow, a measly 400ms!? Is that all!?
and unexpectedly early too
Wow, how generous
@EnzeruAnimeFan
As far as I know, 800 ($10) is the lowest card you can get, as of very recently aswell. I still remember the annoying 2100 or nothing days lol
£3.49? Wednesday EU PSN? College holiday break up tomorrow? SORTED
What the fuck? No Steam release date? Ugh, SEGA.. Are you going to torture us like you did with the Generations preorder?
boost to win…
I woulda bought it if it was on Steam.
It’s sad that they’re only charge $5 for it…
The best sonic created with extras.
Come to me now!
Anyone know if this will get a Japanese release?
Can we have S3&K Remastered,
SONIC ADVENTURE 2
If SEGA are making such a big deal of having METAL SONIC in the continuity shouldnt they digitally remaster and re-release KNUCKLES CHAOTIX??
@Lee
No… Just…no… To both Adventure 2 and Chaotix…
@lee
Normally I’d be all for re-releasing SA2, but after seeing the way they botched Sonic Adventure HD I’d rather not see it now.
Also the game Metal Sonic had the biggest role in was Heroes, which I prefer to SA2. I’d sooner campaign to see that get a HD re-release
$5? Oh right on. I was expecting ten at least. Awesome.
So… what about a PC/Steam release?
$5? That’s awesome. Too bad that the US PSN owners get the shaft again and have to wait another week a la the Generations demo. I mean did Microsoft (the American one, anyway) or Sony of EU get dibs on first release on Sonic titles or something? Or is it that issue about Sega mentioned about the possibility of a PSN S&K port being unlikely at the moment? Is it now affecting all of their Sonic releases on PSN?
It’s on XBL right now. Have at it people.
@blueblur hold left to win
They should update the title to “Sonic MP3″.
The start of an Epic rivalry…
The rise of Metal Sonic…
What his pathetic 2 appearances!? Calm down sega. What utter bollocks.
So… what happened to Steam release?
I’ll be pissed if it doesn’t come. After all, they did say it would come. And I haven’t got the game in any format. Steam release would have been great to me
