Overwhelming Support for RSDK Engine
The results of the latest TSSZ News @Issue poll indicate tremendous confidence and approval of Christian Whitehead’s talents, in the wake of last week’s Sonic CD re-release.
We asked if Sega should allow Whitehead to develop an original 2D Sonic game for official release with his Retro Software Development Kit, the RSDK. Out of 1,007 votes, an incredible 88 percent voted Yes. Just 12 percent voted no.
With sales of Sonic CD still strong on mobile platforms at least, and opinion toward the game overwhelmingly positive, one has to wonder if Sega will have a choice in the future, given inevitable comparisons to the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 2, which in light of SCD may already be at a disadvantage.
A new poll is now available to vote on. You can discuss the results of the latest poll below in the comments.

I got Sonic CD today (I’ve never really played it before btw. I played it when I was a kid, but I didn’t really remember anything). I must say I am really happy with the game. Though I dislike the engine
I found glitches in the game that really bothered me. Btw, when Tails runs out of his flight, he looks like he’s getting raped in the butt. Though I like his underwater animation because he doesn’t have a mad face on him. Idk, I’m tired of playing, but when I’m over it, I’m gonna play again, and see what else Christian has done wrong. I just don’t know why SEGA doesn’t use their original code? Did they lose it or something? Lol. In the end, I do not support Christian – OPINION, don’t get mad.
Anyway, about the soundtracks, the JP one was okay, but when I got to stardust speedway……..GET FUNKY GET FUNKY GET FUNKY, ETC. Oh my gosh was that fricking annoying.
I prefer the US one more. It just sounded “regualar” to me.When I got to SS, MAN WAS I AMAZED!
I like the game, but personally my true experience was ruined because some fan, Whitehead.
^Still an opinion! Don’t forget.
It be awesome if we get to see something like Sonic Retro Nexus or something like it be created for Xbox live Arcade with Sega’s permission that be awesome.
Sega was probably too proud to give fangames any support, but with how well SonicCD is doing (especially financially), maybe they’ll change their tune.
Regarding the new poll, I’m really surprised anyone would disagree that 2011 was a good year for Sonic. Apparently Sega saved little-to-no expense on marketing the francise’s 20th Anniversary as well as the titular milestone game, and so far it looks like their effforts paid off. Generations continued Sonic Colors’s trend of mostly positive reviews, and it looks like it’s doing great in sales. Same can be said saleswise with Mario and Sonic at the 2012 London Olympic Games. And The Taxman’s Sonic CD port/remake is right now selling like hotcakes on the iDevice homefronts.
While I voted Yes on the new poll, I have to say that this has actually been a quiet year for Sonic (based on the amount of games, not the levels of hype flying around). SGHD, SG3DS, and M&S2012 (which I find to be a tiresome retread of the first) have been this year’s only new Sonic games. SCDCW (SonicCDChristianWhitehead) is a remake, if not a port, and M&S is a spinoff with half of the focus on Mario. So Yes, it’s been a very good year for Sonic, but his only ‘real’ game this year has been SG (albiet that had two distinctly different versions).
I voted Yes on the poll, and though I hear that the physics in this game range from awesome to horrible to meh, everything else he’s brought to the game is incredible.
As for the new poll, I would say it was a good year for Sonic, but not so much for American fans (Sonic CD excludes the Japanese vocals and misses out on any specialties for Generations, I in particular missed the Sonic float every time).
I want to congratulate Taxman for not only making the outstanding RSDK engine, but for bringing back the second-best Sonic game in the series: Sonic the Hedgehog CD.
If only Sega has gotten ahold of him during Sonic 4′s development.
If the Sonic CD re-release overall sales are good then SEGA are sitting on a gold mine. SEGA could make a shit load of money using the RSDK tech to revive old classics.
It may be worth SEGA giving the same treatment to Sonic 2 or 3&K to iron out the (new) glitchs found in the Sonic CD re-release before giving Whitehead free rain on a new Sonic game.
Am I the only person that doesn’t want SEGA to continue to port/remake any more old sonic titles? I want them to come up with their own new sonic games and expand upon that. I want SEGA to make new games that are actually better than the old genesis titles instead of making quick bucks re-releasing games we’ve already played. I feel Sonic CD should be the only sonic game that gets this treatment since this game didn’t get this much attention when it was first released back in the 90′s
At least give us a complete rerelease of Sonic 3&K using Retro Engine
So… *Puts on flameshield*
I am in this 12% minority that voted “No” why? Well there are some reasons:
1.Taxman maybe a good programmer but here he had everything! All he had to do was tro port the game! He didnt have to design levels, bosses etc. And trust me if he had to he would fail just like many other fan-games developers.
2. When I was a kid I played shit out of Sonic CD. And when I say it I mean it. Now its weakest from classics IMO. (For me its 1.S3&K 2.Sonic 1. 3.Sonic 2 and last is CD). Its just so medicore for me.
3.Whats the difference beetwen this and orginal? Spindash? I may have enjoyed it but still its the same product with different menu, slighty different physics, different spindash and some new pixels that we call Tails.
And finally:
4.We fans should not get into SEGA;s buisness. They make games and its their job to make them. Actually I think they SHOULDN’T listen to us at all now. They should make something orginal without trying to please “IT NEEDZ TO BE MOAR LIKE CLASSICS NA DHAVE ONLY SAWNIC CAUSE EVERYONE ELSE SUCKZZZ!!!” people on one side and modern or/and Adventure fans on other side. They need to do something THEY want to do. If not then we will stay where we are re-relasing same shit over and over again.
So just my 2 cents.
@HUNTER297
First of all. play the Sonic Retro demo and THEN tell me Christian Whitehead doesn’t know how to handle level design.
Second, you should fucking stab yourself repeatedly in the head for the bit you wrote in caps.
As for that not listening to fans shite, good god I hope you never decide to run a business!
Just your 2 cents indeed, that’s all it’s worth.
@jasonchrist
If fans want to look to the past every game then yes. I think SEGA shouldnt listen to us at all. What have we done? Just look: We are partly responsible for 06, we are bitching on every turn and we are broken fanbase. SEGA cant please us all so they try to focus on everything and thats impossible. Solution: Try to do something orginal and do not listen to fans. Were they listening to fans while making Sonic 1? NO! Was it orginal, creative and great? HELL YEAH! Now we have to shut up and see what SEGA will do.
And if he can handle level design that well then stick to fangames. What difference will it make? If he wants to make games then he should try to get a work at SEGA. Thats all.
And I want stab myself cause its true.
*Wont
^Sure you do want. ;p
@Jason – Get outta here. Telling a person to stab himself? You’re cool, you’re mature. I agree with everything Hunter said. I’ve always wanted SEGA to stop listening to their fans since last year (Btw if Sonic Wii U might turn out as an original game, if its true
)
I want SEGA to make AT LEAST one Sonic game, without listening to fans. If its great, then continue to let SEGA make games without listening to fans. Then, if things start going bad, SEGA can just receive responses from fans. I admit sometimes SEGA doesn’t think.
Example:
SEGA worker: Hey guys, let’s make a butterfly Sonic!
Another SEGA worker: Yes, Brilliant! You sir are getting a raise!
….Did no one take the second to realize that that (yes the 2 that’s make sense) idea IS NOT Sonic?
Anyway, Jason, you are wrong. Hunter is right.
Looks like someone is being a little overprotective for a Sonic fan, Christian Whitehead…………..Jason. Ya I said it. Christian is a fan, just like all of us. Just because Christian can make a fangame, doesn’t mean he’s any more special than we are. If you took away his developing skills, then I bet none of you would give two sh*ts about him. Same for Bill Gates, Selena Gomez(idk?) Etc. All those types of people are not more special than we are(except for God. Yes I’m religious, and I suggest you don’t say anything about that, unless you know what’s good for you.)
@Ricardo – the two play pretty much identically to me? Infact, the new version is a lot better, specifically in the special stages. Any examples of what you’re talking about?
I would imagine that Sonic the hedgehog has the biggest fan base on the planet in terms of video games. SEGA has released over 60 Sonic games in 20 years. SEGA deserve a massive amount of credit and recognition for what they have done with Sonic including taking the time to re-release a more complete version of Sonic CD.
It feels right that they should try new ideas and re-invent Sonic. However, we can’t get away from the previous 2d Sonic games because they weren’t just very good games. They were and still are brillant, awesome, really fun to play again and again, and set the standard for all the (not Sonic) games we see today.
@Danny – I don’t remember all, but I’ll give you two.
1.After you beat the metal sonic race twice or more, when you destroy the machine full of flowers, and if you jump when Sonic tries to get out of the screen, he will be stuck. You have to jump right as Sonic is about to get off the screen, aka chasing eggman.
2. In metallic madness 2, when you first become mini sonic or tails, there will be these rollers(idk what you call them, but they move you right and left. ) There will be a silver cylinder platform. When it goes up, and you try to push against it, you die.
I probably didn’t explain myself too good. Ill try to post a video soon, but it might be crappy xD
I think they need to turn Whitehead loose on a Waluigi game.
I’d love to see retro sonic nexus as an official game!
Or a fan-game
Either is fine as long as they don’t let it die lol
I’m gonna be the odd man out and say that I haven’t played his version of Sonic CD so I didn’t chime in on the polls, and that is because I’m not as fond of Sonic CD as a lot of other people are. I’m sorry, but that game is almost as overrated as Sonic Adventure 2 (even though I love SA2), maybe even more so. Is it a good game? Yeah, it is. Does it deserve to be called “teh bestest Sawneek gaem evrrz”? I don’t think so. Why? Three reasons.
1) Awkward physics. (although not as bad as in Sonic 4)
2) Wonky level design. (ESPECIALLY WACKY WORKBENCH. I HATE THAT DAMN LEVEL.)
3) Terrible collision detection. (the loop in Palmtree Panic Act 1 is a prime example)
I know that part of the wackiness in level design is to put more emphasis on the Time Travel aspect of the game, but it still doesn’t excuse levels like Collision Chaos and Wacky Workbench, where it’s a chore to play no matter which time period you’re running around in. And I heard that the physics problems are fixed in this version, but I still don’t know if it’s worth it at this point in time for me. For one thing, I have a shitload of other games I have reserved and still want to pick up (Ultimate MvC3, Mario 3D Land, Skyward Sword, to name a few), and I already have Sonic Gems Collection which lets me play the game anyway, so I just don’t think paying for the game is worth it at this particular moment. I may end up getting it eventually, but still…
Fans are not to blame for most of Sega’s errors. Sega may have listed to their demands, which caused them to make Sonic 06, a new “Adventure” style game, but the fans weren’t to blame for the horrible story telling, crappy glitches, and rushed out project due to horrible management and deadlines.
Sega may have listened to the demands to go back to original Sonic gameplay, but fans weren’t to blame for the crappy replication of physics and sad excuse for new level design in that game either, that was still Sega.
If anything, the one game I say that I would mostly blame on the idea of fans, rather than execution on Sega’s behalf, would be Shadow the Hedgehog, but Sega should have known better than to read the fan-letters of 10 year olds who play too many FPS games.
It’s not wrong for Sega to listen to the fans, but they have to do what’s right on their part and execute it properly. You can’t always blame a game designer’s errors on their fanbase. Just look at Sonic Generations, that couldn’t be anymore of a love letter to the fans, and while having it’s little kinks, is still a master piece, and debatefully, one of the greatest games since the classics.
Now, I don’t think Sega should solely base all their decisions on polls per say, but they absolutely should take fan input into consideration. They do have minds of their own of course. However, fan opinions shouldn’t be pushed away just because of Sega’s failure to properly execute what they’ve wanted in the past.
Heh, I found Wacky Workbench incredibly annoying too. Not as annoying as the Collision Chaos boss, which is even more annoying this time around as I noticed Sonic would sometimes go through the flippers.
I personally found Sonic CD to be the weakest of the classic games, though I did find the port admirable. I’d like to see an original game made with this engine, but I don’t know enough about Christian Whitehead to give a “yes” or “no” on whether they should be given full responsibility of one.
I would like to see what was done with Desert Dazzle though.
I guess thats why i loved sonic more in the dreamcast era… and 2006 or 2007 because sega was ignoring us fans as far as i know
ignore us again sega! XD lol…
still… if dimensions (or sonic wii u) has momentum based gameplay again, i’ll be very happys
i’d love to see atleast shadow, blaze, knuckles and maybe tails playable again.
coloured sonics… one is faster (yellow has boost? :C) green is unknowen… flight? lol. white will be like super mario 3d land were u get an invincible tanoki suit for dying lots.
nevertheless… WHERES SONIC 4 EP II???? please be cheaper… lol.
goodnight peeps |-) zzz
Thank you Charles Green. I’m starting to get sick of Sonic fans claiming that Sonic Team listens to them too much and that they never do anything on their own. Sega/Sonic Team were the ones who Christmas rushed an obvious beta of a Sonic game with a terrible plot. They were also the geniuses of the entire Werehog concept and gameplay for Unleashed. And I think the so-called “Sonic the Hedgehog 4″ speaks for itself.
And whoever claims that Sonic Team has never made anything by themselves/without using fan feedback apparently hasn’t played Sonic Colors.
@ Charles Green & Zinos
THANK YOU! That’ll teach the unhappy minority (looking at you, HUNTER297).
@Zinos – Actually, SEGA did not make Colors by themselves. When SEGA unleashed (:D) Unleashed, SEGA received feedback saying the daytime levels were good, but werehog was bad. So that made them think to make a game like Colors; daytime levels with a boost feature, and with better platforming. Back at E3 2010, there was this one Youtube video with a woman SEGA worker and a man in a Sonic costume next to her. She said that SEGA/SonicTeam looked back at Unleashed, took the idea of the daytime levels, and made them come up with Sonic Colors. Someone seems a little butthurt for 06, Unleashed, and 4. Get over it.
Wow, @UshroM, I cannot believe you. Same with you @Zinos. Charles said horrible story telling, crappy physics, crappy glitches, sad excuse for new level design. Well guess what the f*ck is up with that? THEY ARE OPINIONS SMART ONES. In fact, the whole post Charles Green posted is entirely an opinion.
@Charles Green – You thought you could trick me with that opinion post, didn’t you?
@Charles Green and Zinos
Both of you make perfect sense about fans “bashing” Sonic Team for listening to them too much. and never make their own games.
And for that, I agree.
