Sparse Reports of Upgrade for Apple Device
Despite Sega saying nothing on the matter, we’ve received a couple of news tips in that allege Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I was upgraded on iPad to include higher quality graphics optimized for the system.
That, along with some reports of sluggishness and control problems, look to be the only changes made to the alleged HD version. The changes do not apply to the version available for the iPhone or iPod Touch.
Thanks to SegaWorlds and alex001 for tipping us. If you have news to share, be sure to share it with us. Click Send Tips at the top of every page, or tip us on Twitter.

So I bought the iphone version for my iPad and now I have to repay to get the iPad optimized version that should be given for free (or at least announced at the beginning), I’m going to say no this.
It also seems to have a nicer, less-shiny Sonic model, if this image is any indication:

Sonic has a new model in this game. I wonder.

>dat new model
…wow. Kinda makes me almost want THAT for Sonic 4 Episode 1 on my 360 and PS3. Looks like the retarded shine is gone, if not completely nixed.
i was the one who tipped them, yay!
anyway, im glad they did it, certainly ep2 is on focus from now.
@Sonikdude101 …Holy shit, that’s the unleashed model! Dear god if they’re using that model for Ep II….that game is gonna be gorgeous
While all the comments note the lag and the control issues, the price is set at $1.99. For that I’m definitely willing to buy and wait for a future patch. For that price I also don’t mind double dipping from the PS3 version I have especially with that great new model (always could use a version to play on the go to).
I just can’t understand why not make the other app Universal…
Well, in fact I can: Greed.
Sonic 4 sucks on iPhone originally, I wonder if the iPad version fixes the poor framerate. And even on that tiny screen of the iPod Touch, Sonic 4 looks terrible, Sonic’s character model, and that screen spin when you run through a loop feels very jumpy, not smooth at all.
After playing the ipad version for a bit the main problem for me is the controls. They use a virtual joystick instead of a joypad. Worse is the joystick is so small my thumb covers the entire thing (this makes changing directions a real chore as a tiny twitch in my thumb makes Sonic either grind to a halt or change direction). There’s also a noticeable lag in the controls itself as you can see when you move the joystick to the left or right it takes a bit for the command to be recognized (the same for the jump button). As for the character model, it is a real improvement (not shiny at all). With the loops I did notice some problems, much notably the famous wall standing trick (this was interesting as it happened as the screen was in the middle of rotating so the screen was at an angle with sonic standing horizontal to the angle). Basically, at this stage, while looking better, the game plays worse than before.
1. The model isn’t new, it has a darker tone though.
2. The Controls can lag and they just don’t work.
3. The level select screen is the exact same as the Ipod one.
4. The game is pretty much the Ipod version with somewhat better graphics and worse controls.
Something just gave me the strangest feeling now that the physics will not change D:
Oh well xD
Although I’ve never really had a problem with the game’s physics and though I’ve never played any version of the game but the Wii & 360 version, I honestly think if they’re going to release an ‘upgrade’ it should be done to fix the physics & improve the controls.
Oh Sonic Team, what goes through your heads sometimes?
/Facepalm./
For all the versions. Not just the iPad version.
The story is slightly inaccurate. The app wasn’t upgraded; a new iPad version costing $1.99 was released. If it was an upgrade, those who previously purchased the iPhone version (which happens to run on iPads, but with a smaller screen size) would automagically be able to download a free update for this new iPad version, but that isn’t the case.
Beautiful on the iPad. No regrets as to the 1.99 purchase. A bit shameless, yes, but hey if Segas finally learning how to make money as well as great games perhaps they’ll resurge with a new system in the near future and blow play station out of the water.
