Seven Stages in Hand, Possibly Coming to SRB 2.1
We haven’t talked about the ongoing Sonic Robo Blast 2 project in a while. For those unaware, SRB is the longest maintained Sonic fan game franchise, spanning now three decades of development. The latest edition, Sonic Robo Blast 2, still runs on the DOOM engine.
Passed on from original producer AJ Freda and Sonic Team Jr., the current SRB2 team is hard at work on the next proper version, SRB2.1. Among the planned additions will be NiGHTS style special stages using Super Sonic. NiGHTS Mode, as it is called, isn’t new to SRB2, but when completed, this is the first time the mode will be used in the quest for those elusive Chaos Emeralds.
“The new special stages are based on our main single player zones, so the first one is based on GFZ (Green Forest Zone),” said SRB2 producer Mystic in a front page post on the SRB2 website earlier this month. “This area is large and simple, with a low blue sphere requirement.”
But the stages will get progressively more difficult as time moves forward. Mystic notes that while the current Sonic Team Jr. is shooting to include these in SRB 2.1, a deadline of “when it’s done” applies. Take a look at some of the special stage screenshots in the gallery below. We’ll be sure to let you know of SRB2′s next major release when it happens.

30 years of development ??!?!!?
Get outta here! *trollface*
30 years? It’s been in development since 1998… xD
This is an INSANELY good fangame though. I’m waiting so impatiently for the next version!!! I’ve never gotten through that darn 7th special stage, haha. I liked the NiGHTS feature in other levels, it could work for a special stage…
Man, I’m looking forward to 2.1!!
Indeed, the game has been in development since 1998. Hence, the 90s, the 2000s, and the 2010s *are* three decades.
See what I did there? ;-D
If you think about it, the existence of this site *also* spans three decades. =)

I forgot about this fan game.Happy to see it wasn’t cancelled
You play the special stages as Super Sonic…so you can collect all the Chaos Emeralds and turn into….Super Sonic? Something about that doesn’t make sense.
“Three decades.” Oh, you clever you.
Two corrections: One, it’s not “SRB2.1″ or “SRB 2.1″, it’s “SRB2 v2.1″. Two, the name of the first stage is Green Flower Zone, not Green Forest Zone.
That’s an interesting addition, even though it doesn’t make a lot of sense (How can you play as Super Sonic if you don’t have the emeralds yet?). I was just now talking to a friend about SRB2, and wondering how the project was going. Nice to see some news from them.
I also hope they don’t remove the old stages altogether, as I kind of liked them. Perhaps they could come back as bonus stages?
To the TSSZNews staff: This has kinda bothered me for some time, but I never thought about reporting it before. Whenever I click on an thumbnail on the galleries here, it will first open another page with only the thumbnail. I have to click on that again for the actual image to open. Is this the intended behavior? Can you guys add something like a lightbox JavaScript of sorts? Thanks
this games a disaster
I used to love SRB!
Ah, I see the Secret Rings reference. SRB2 would be so much better if they switched to an engine that supported slopes, among other things.
hi off topic but, i LOVE this game played it a lot, but once i went to start it now it starts window mode and an error saying: “Single_handler(): segment violation.” Help?
@sonicgenerationsPC: Not sure what that is. I’d just make a copy of your save file and re-download the game.
@sonicgenerationsPC: Are you using a launcher to play the game? If so, you could try messing with the color/resolution options in the launcher, or switching to OpenGL mode. If that doesn’t work, perhaps you can enable Windows’ compatibility mode?
This tutorial covers how to enable that on Windows Vista: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Make-older-programs-run-in-this-version-of-Windows But I’m almost sure it works on Windows 7 aswell.
nope not a launcher just the game itself. Also i have Windows XP Home Edition.
@unknownlight i just downloaded it again today. But thanks anyway unknownlight.
