What’s with the “Colorful Impact Effects?”
Many fans look to ratings boards to provide some insight on what to expect in the next hotly anticipated game. Sonic fans are no different, and so when word spread over the weekend that the ESRB rating surfaced for Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II, the sleuths were afoot.
Aside from one detail, however, there isn’t much to speak of. The ESRB’s listing shows the game will be coming to PC, likely as a digital download. There is no mention of an iOS rating, but there wasn’t for Episode I, either.
There are a couple jokes that can be made about the ESRB description as well, particularly toward the end:
This is a side-scrolling adventure game in which Sonic the Hedgehog and his fox-like sidekick team up to defeat their arch-nemesis, Dr. Eggman. As players zoom through fantastical landscapes, they collect items (e.g., gold rings and power-ups), avoid hazards, and jump on robots to free the animals trapped inside. Boss fights occur infrequently, and are accompanied by colorful impact effects.
No matter what, it looks like we’re closer to a proper reveal, and at this rate, it could show off something close to the finished product. We’ll continue to follow developments on the next Sonic here.

Sounds Engrish. Heh.
yay pc
Sega should try to hide some of these things better, but I mean most people knew it was coming to the PC. I cannot wait for it, since there is no Wii release I can settle for playing on my computer.
Colorful impact effects? Sounds like Hyper Sonic…
“This is a side-scrolling adventure game [no duh] in which Sonic the Hedgehog [hence the title] and his fox-like [is this on account of his 2 tails?] sidekick team up to defeat their arch-nemesis, Dr. Eggman [not Robotnik]. As players zoom [speed involved] through fantastical [Is that even a word? According to Google, yes.] landscapes, they collect items (e.g., gold rings [obviously] and power-ups [standard Sonic fare, or a new game mechanic?]), avoid hazards [fine, as long as they aren't colorful barrels or unescapable pits with spikes at the bottom] , and jump on robots [I half-expected "Jump on all those Eggman's robots" to be in this] to free the animals trapped inside. Boss fights occur infrequently [For some reason, recent Sonic games have had a lack of proper boss fights], and are accompanied by colorful impact effects [That was probably put in there because it's from a rating company. Still, "colorful impact effects" sounds weird.].”
“Colorful impact effects.”
The “double-spin” thing from the teaser comes to mind…
We are entering Stage 2 of the Sonic 4 cycle
Stage 2:Becomes apparent the game is more or less complete, Sega still insists on 4 more months of hype without showing anything meaningful.
I know ESRB has leaked out games before but typically it’s “rating pending” this has a rating which means it’s near finished. Also they don’t review iOS games so that’s why it’s not listed
Sega should beat modders to the punch and include toggles for classic Sonic and Tails and genesis physics, it’s going to happen either way so why not get some good PR from it?
Wait! Its rated!?
That means game is almost ready! SG was rated month before relase!
I’m still preemptively rolling on the floor laughing at how Tails might works in the game.
A:Tails has no homing attack bubble chains are extinct, levels are huge and open because of his flight mechanic
B:Tails has a homing attack and can’t fly, Ken Balough say’s “Tails couldn’t fly in Sonic 2 so this is nostalgic fans should be happy!
It says PC, but…
Where’s my Sonic CD and Generations DLC?
As Ep2 is digital download, are SEGA likely to announce a release date only a fews days before it is due to be released, like SCD was?
Watch SEGA reveal the gameplay and screenshots next month on “Hedgehog Day”. God, their PR is so predictable it’s not even funny.
Maybe a new gimmick perhaps?
@sonikdude: I’ll hold you to that. If they don’t, you owe me five internet dollars for getting my hopes up.
“fox-LIKE”? MY LIFE IS A LIE!!!
Me: “Cool some new Sonic 4 info. Wonder what little info it’s going to show so people can get mad at it for almost little to no reason…”
Wait… This game must be further along than we expect.
The impact effects more than likely are inspired by Rush, remember how everytime you hit a boss a burst of color occurred to add emphasis
@Knuckles Chaotix
Let’s hope so. If you remember last time S4:E1 was horribly leaked.
I’m going to mark the day when someone does it again.
@SSJSonicXX14 – So true man. Is Sega going to give him flight, or HA? If Tails gets flight, then that means Sonic’s HA goes away.
….Wait. Even if Sega does give Tails flight, and no HA on anyone, Sega could still use the chains of enemies. Even in Episode 1, it was possible to kill the chain, WITHOUT HA. All you had to do was jump, and ride the chain.
Then again, Sonic will have HA. If Sega got rid of HA, then what will happen to Episode 1? It would be nearly unplayable without it, that is, if Sega connects the two games together…ugh, my brain hurts.
Tristan, you should use a new Sonic 4 picture as the header seeing as the Episode II logo was revealed.
Blood is colorful, right?
lol at people who think the HA is going away. You guys do realise that modern controllers have more buttons than the Mega Drive had?
@thapoint09
Challenge accepted.
Colorful impact effects?
@MrFranklin, the modern day controllers can have 100 buttons, but this game uses 2. invalid point..
@Mr Franklin – Ya, but no one wants to use A – XYB for HA. Duh.
@SSJSonicXX14 & @MetalMatrix88
That lazy ‘Homing Attack’ must remain in S4 Ep2 (for Sonic only).
I’ll admit that I prefer the 2d Sonic gameplay and I don’t much care for the HA. It’s a very lazy gimmick. You can use it to skip a small area taking away some of he difficulty. The ‘line’ of enemies that some times appeared in Ep1 specifically for the HA felt very fake. The badniks are better when they move about (on their own) not staying in one place.
And yet the HA is actually Sonic’s special move so it would be a shame to remove it. Think about it, Tails special move is flying and swimming. Knuckles is gliding and climbing. Sure Sonic can spindash but so could Tails & Knuckles in S3&K. Sonic had to rely on power ups in S3&K (electric, flame, air bubble) to allow him to jump higher to help reach higher places. If you take the HA away then Sonic feels very plain compared to the ‘flying two tailed fox’. Why would Tails need the HA when he can fly. The fact that Tails could fly in CD the so called ‘prequel’ leads me to believe that Tails will fly in Ep2.
You could say that Sonic had a special ability in CD, the ‘super pill out’ but that was just an alternative (a very good one at that) to the spindash.
So the HA probably should remain. SEGA just need to design the levels better to accomodate it. To be able to use it to reach higher places.
Just a thought.
@MilesKnightwing I couldn’t possibly agree more.
What about insta-sheild, I LOVED that move, but probably won’t happen.
Wonder if Sonic Team is going to allow the HA to be optional like in Generations. But then again it would just call for more optional skills. :L
Insta-shield won’t be back until Episode 3, since SEGA insists on being predictable.
As it’s Episode 2, SEGA requires the game be painfully similar to Sonic 2, even if it means removing advances made in Sonic 3/Knuckles, because OMG SUNIC TOO IS DA BEST GAEM EVAR.
Also, for some reason, CD is involved. Probably because they came out around the same time, and Episode CD wouldn’t make any sense.
Wow, can’t wait for the colorful impact effects… This game MUST feature rainbows!^^
Hyper Sonic? It’d be cool, and if you think about it, it is slightly possible considering it’s basically returning elements from the classic era. However, my guess is this isn’t the case. What the hell else could it be?
please return Sonic Spindash/Roll in future…..
