We Sought a Proper Translation–Don’t Lose Hope
Though several community watercoolers were offline yesterday in protest of the SOPA and PIPA legislation, those that remained active were abuzz of word some sort of official Sonic movie may be in development by Sega Sammy’s animation arm in Japan, Marza Animation Planet.
Though there remain skeptics, it helps when the alleged source is one of the main men behind Sonic, Yuji Naka. Recently, Mr. Naka took a trip to Marza, and via his Facebook and Twitter feeds, mentioned something about a Sonic animation while there. It had been tough to this point to get a proper translation, which has been key in determining what Mr. Naka actually said. So we asked our Japan based reporter Danny Russell to help us. Here is what Mr. Naka said in part:
Marza Animation Planet is made up of members from VE R&D (http://sega.jp/corp/saiyo/csjob/ve.shtml), which is a division he had a hand in creating. It looks like they’re working on a Sonic movie. Their offices seem nice, and they have a screening room / theatre there.
Danny further clarified tonight, saying Mr. Naka’s remarks don’t necessarily confirm or deny anything that was fit for release–just that work toward a Sonic animation was seen while at the studio, and it appeared to be part of a larger movie project.
Sega, for their part, have said nothing on the matter. While the work could be for an upcoming game or an internal project, there is at least some hope Sega Sammy is pushing its animation studio toward pushing the company’s flagship franchise on to the big screen. If we hear anything more, we will pass it along. Thanks to all who tipped us off to this story.

Wait….What?!
FFFFFFFFFFFohgod let it be true
I feel like this is probably just an animation for a new game.
That would be BEYOND awesome if Marza was, in fact, making a Sonic movie, especially after the hell of a job Sega Sammy VE had done with Night of the Werehog.
Kudos on using “infers” correctly. Don’t see that on the internet much, these days.
It might just be another Night of the Werehog thing. Could it be based on Sonic 4 Episode II? Maybe.
@jared
I agree if you go on there wiki page, pretty much all of there animation goes towards cut scenes in games.
what a coincidence cause a friend called me about that progressive insurance commercial and wondered if a movie of Sonic was ever in the works and I told him…Not yet but it has my vote as long a HOLLYWOOD don’t get to be the schmo’s who work on it.
ofcourse there was the classic movie 1999 the one with sonic, tails, and knux vs. metal sonic. Still an ole favorite too let me not forget lol. dammit I couldn’t remember what year that was too..had to look it up lol. Its late and after a long day of watching the protests unfold I need sleep LOL.
An official Sonic film made by Sega’s own Marza Animation Planet? Count me in.
They did a fantastic job with Unleashed’s “Night of the Werehog”.
Then again, it probably for an upcoming game.
Let’s wait and see.
you’re kidding, right? if it is true, i’ll be geeking out!
*drools*
MARZA! MARZA! MARZA! WORK THAT-ok
I loved Night of the werehog.
That shit was rad.
If they are actually making it,it would be epic if it was voiced in every language like Generations.
The fact that Yuji Naka made a trip to Marza convinced me even more that Prope is basically a team of SEGA.
WHAT?! What?!
Whoa. That was unexpected. Awesome.
FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF
I SUPPORT!
A Sonic movie?
Done by the studio that made Night of the Werehog?
Pleeeeeease be true!
AWESOME!
If true, let’s all hope its a lengthy movie, or at least longer than Night of the Werehog.
this made my day. i was hoping for a sonic movie. it’s been a long time, since 1999. My god. I hope i get to see it.
here’s their website: http://www.marza.com/en/index.html
Oh, my gosh! I hope this is true!
I can’t wait!! If the commercials for it air on TV, I’m gonna freak out and probably give my mom a heartattack! I can’t wait!
I would LOVE to see a feature length Sonic movie in theaters, I hope that’s what it is. It might be another animated short like “Night of the Werehog” but even though that would be kinda cool a full movie is just so much more awesome.
Nine Short Film To Offical Film
Sonic Short fan film to Sonic offical film

I really wouldn’t get your hope your hopes up… I translate the key part of it as “It’s the place where things like Sonic movies are being made.”
While a film is not impossible, it sounds more like cutscenes to me. I feel that he would have said 映画 rather than ムービー if he wanted to infer it was a film of some kind. And I’m not sure where Danny got his “It looks like they’re…” part from :-/
Sorry. :[
Oh yeah, I heard about this.
You don’t think maybe it was this Progressive commercial? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQtU0Plv1Xw&feature=related
I hope it’s not true. I don’t want a Sonic movie.
Why should a Sonic movie be made when there are so many other games that don’t have an animated TV show or movie yet? I would rather see a Star Fox series be made then another Sonic animated series.
*le gasp*
=u= if this is true… gadhhsjjajkflalkdjs :’D
I’m not getting my hopes up. But it would be cool if they were doing another animated short like “Night of the Werehog”.
Sonic X season 4 maybe?Probably not but still, the movie sounds cool.
I’m all for a Sonic film. In fact, we should’ve had one long ago. Well, we did have “Sonic the movie,” but that was merely an English-dubbed version of Japan’s Sonic OVAs. As long as it has a decent plot, and isn’t just a rehash of past games. I wouldn’t mind a quick flashback of them, but I would prefer a completely new story. The animation Marza did for “Night of the Werehog” was great, so I have no doubt that what ever they are cooking up will look utterly amazing….
Another Sonic anime maybe? Animation to me sounds like anime. Hopefully someone other than 4kids would pick it up too. I am not saying i hate 4kids, it’s just that with another company, the show would be way more popular.
Man, well, I hope SEGA will tell us something about the animation! I’ve been wondering when/if SEGA would make another Sonic movie.
Or if SEGA hasn’t said anything, it might mean that it will only be released in Japan. I hope that isn’t true, and that it will squeeze into America or other countries that enjoy Sonic the Hedgehog!

….HOLYCRAPHOLYCRAP!
Please be real! I will go with T.V. show or a movie!
But sorry no cutscenes for me right now, I want something like loooonnnggg this time. >.>
I mean, it’s EXTREMELY boring here and i want some entertainment not old stuff i watched before repeated 10x >:L
The headline should read “implies.” Inferring is to implying what reading is to writing, or hearing is to saying.
If this is true, I hope its a live action movie
@Sonic52789 a live action Sonic movie?? Oh dear god no! Just let it be a great CGI movie, live action is just too risky for our little blue friend
@sonic52789
A live-action Sonic movie would spell DISASTER. Who would want to see the Blue Blur being raped by Hollywood’s horrible writing, bad acting, and a lousy director?
Now I’m all for Lebron’s film, since he knows what he’s doing.
But back on topic, don’t ever say something that asinine again.
I hope it will not be crappy.
OR ELSE I WILL BE VERY MAD!
SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
…………..ahem………….
Ohmigosh I hope this is true, I loved loved LOVED the animation (details, fluid movement, decent plot) for Night of the Werehog! I hope if this is true, they don’t ruin it. Fingers crossed that they’ll do our blue blur justice (and the voice acting’s not murdered like Sonic X)

Okay, what i meant before as Sonic Shell25, I’m really a mega fan of Sonic and Sonic always. I do want to see a new Sonic TV series, but a movie? i think that’ll be cooler than tv.
If they made, like, a half-hour version of Unleashed’s opening (minus the hairy ending) with some sweet Sawnic on Metal Sawnic action and some Amy savin’ at the end, that’d be pretty baws.
Hmm, interesting…
Also, just to throw it out there– are there REALLY no big Sonic fans who speak fluently in English and Japanese? Really? I swear, when I finally get myself into learning Japanese, I’ll be like the only one.
He could have seen them making cutscenes for a new Sonic game…
