Could Sega be gearing up for more kart racing action?
According to a rumor over at The Sonic Stadium, implying that some form of a follow up to 2010’s Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing could be in the works – however, if the rumor is to be believed, the follow up will only land on the Playstation Vita, Nintendo 3DS, and Nintendo WiiU.
We’ve been hearing rumblings of a second All-Stars Racing for close to a year now, so it’s not too much of a stretch to think that this could very well be legitimate. The only wrinkle, of course, are the choices for platforms – as Sonic Stadium deduces, it seems logical that this might not be a formal Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing 2, but is instead some kind of updated or “remixed” port, likely supplementing the original game’s content with new tracks, racers and modes.
Despite being what they claim to be a trusted source (with a fancy Facebook conversation screencap and everything), they’re still treating the information like a rumor – and so, we’ll default to their decision and treat this as a rumor as well.
Personally, out of all of Sega’s “All-Stars” games, Racing was my favorite (if you missed it, my video review is here), and I’d definitely like to see them do more with it. What do you guys think?

Screw Sonic and Sega All Stars Racing! How about Mario and Sonic Kart? True, it’s not an adventure or fighting game that we’d all prefer, but it’s better than ANOTHER Olympic game!
^ If that were to happen, Sega and Nintendo would get into fights. People would also complain that it isn’t using Sumo Digital, or Nintendo’s engine. It just wouldn’t work.
Mario Kart is completely luck-based, which is somewhat dumb. Sonic Racing is different, and works better.
Recently I played Mario Kart Wii, and the controls are broken. At least MK7 works better than MKW. Whenever I play Sonic Racing, it always feels golden!
The only thing I don’t like is that when the player drifts, it makes a BIG EMPHASIS, if you know what I mean. The edges of the screen turn black; I cannot explain it very well. I would like it to be like MK, where Nintendo does not change the lighting, or make emphasism; everything is still the same, but you’re just drifting.
@Corncore
Isn’t there already a version of ASR on the iPhone? I know we’ve covered it.
Please no… I think we’re all Mario Karted out for awhile now… too many of those. They need to make another Fighter’s Megamix.
Okay, except NiGHTS needs to legitimately be in this one, and as a racer.
He’s more of a “Sega Superstar” than Zombiko or whoever the hell ever will be.
@Metal: Fun Fact:
Mario was going to be in All Stars Racing, only scrapped due to Sega thought they should save that kind of crossover for the M&S series.
Mario Kart is also not luck-based, unless you’re just a noob at it.
Plus, I’ve notice quite some control problems with All Stars Racing, mostly where the drifting and boosting feel weird. MKW controls fine, if you’re on a bike.
tl;dr: Putting the greatest Racing game and the fastest character together will yeild some interesting results. Fighting would’ve been better(Brawl doesn’t count, Sonic was obviously underpowered) but I’m not sure if Sumo really does fighting games. Keep on waiting…
Another great title for the 3DS! Let’s hope it doesn’t stop!
Awesome. I hope so.
@Cheddly – Well If it is another racing game, they should definitely include Mario. Who says Sega cannot have more than one crossover genre? The Mario and Sonic series is old now. Sega should stop and kick it up a notch, by including him in something else.
Btw, I’m not a noob. You got to try to stop saying that word. Only immature kids use that word. Try using the word “beginner” or something else.
Like so many others have said, it’d be great if it was a fighter. Smash, Power Stone, or Naruto CoN clone-flavored please. I don’t want more Racing unless they can make the racers less slide-y and make getting hit by the items actually matter, god I hated that about the first game.
>People claiming SaSASR is controls better than ANY MK.
>People claiming MK is entirely luck based.
Such funny jokes.
Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing sold well, so I think SEGA is satisfied, and a sequel would satiate.
That being said, there were deep flaws in Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing that don’t become apparent until a lot of people are playing or people become good at the game, mostly in the items and course design. The biggest one is the “runaway leader” problem (I’m going to use a board game term here, but that’s because it suits it so well I don’t need to explain what it means). It’s the reason why Mario Kart has Blue Shells and Snowboard Kids has Frying Pans and Ghosts.
In Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing, there is nothing that directly attacks the lead player from a distance, and literally every single item the player in the lead receives can be used to defend oneself from incoming attacks. This means that whoever establishes the lead by the end of the first lap will, nine times out of ten, be the one who’s in the lead at the end of the race.
That’s why I really hope they at least tweak the item scheme to be more offensive and less defensive. And find a way to get All-Star moves to work online, because that’s a vital part of catching up for racers who fall behind–because the item scheme is so defensive, items are practically useless to catch up with in a pack of sufficiently skilled racers.
P.S. A very minor thing I’d like to see in a sequel: An indication of who’s using motion controls for the 3DS and Wii U versions.
I noticed an issue with the control stick for the Wii U up there–it wouldn’t be a concern for me if I can tilt the Wii U pad like a steering wheel. I play Mario Kart Wii and Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing exclusively with the Wii Wheel.
@Ophelia
Oh my god a Snowboard Kids fan! You and me, we’re friends now.
Heh, you’re really hoping for another Snowboard Kids game too, huh? Well, one with the weird non-snow courses and the cartoony character design at least.
The Ghost was, in my opinion, the best anti-lead item I’ve ever seen in a kart racer. (And I mean “kart racer” to mean a racing game with an items and weapons system; Snowboard Kids obviously doesn’t use go-karts.) It kept the lead player in check while keeping him or her in full control. Ghosts were common as well, and they seemed to get more common the further out the lead player gets.
No other racing game I’ve played has something similar to that, and I love kart racers. (I love Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing too, if I gave the impression that I didn’t. But it feels rough around the edges.)
It sounded to me like it could be the next All-star game (aka, not Racing).
But looking at the platforms is sort of a giveaway, considering Racing is not available on any of those, and if it was NOT Racing, they’d included PS3 and 360.
What about Sonic & SEGA All Stars Racing Arcade?
It should released for arcades on this year like: Chuck E. Cheese’s, Dave and Busters, Boardwalks, etc….
If they are truly making a sequel to Sonic & SEGA All-stars Racing, then two things NEED to happen: 1) Banjo & Kazooie need to come back. 2) (This one is more important) Toejam & Earl MUST come in as playable racers! There is no negotiation. They must be included this time!
now i’m pissed. why the hell does it alyays go on a system i do not! have!
@Trez Sonic the Fighters is actually quite underrated, but I believe he was thinking of something a bit more like Smash Bros or Power Stone 2. An Arena-Based Party Fighting game with tons of Sega Characters playable. That’d be awesome!!!
Oh, and Skai Cyan? Remember in Mario kard DS, Wii, and 7 when some asshat in last place would use a blue shell and know you out of first place as well as hit the cars around you? Remember when crap like that from overpowered items caused you to get 4th place instead of 1st?
that’s what everyone means when they say newer Mario Kart games are unbalanced/luckbased/etc.
