Have rumors been finally made a reality?
We’ve been hearing hushed whispers of some sort of follow-up to 2010’s Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing; job listings for Sumo Digital employees hiring for “SSR 3DS”, Facebook conversations with developers suggesting another entry is on its way… well, according to Kotaku, the cat is officially out of the bag. According to their criminally short article, Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing 2 branded toys are being shown at the New York Toy Fair today. Unfortunately, Kotaku lacks any sort of photographic evidence – and while I do not doubt the veracity of their claims, I’m more wondering if this isn’t instead related to the “All-Stars Racing Remix” reported on by Sonic Stadium a few weeks ago.
This is, of course, not the first time one of Sega’s big secrets have gone public sooner than expected due to action-figure related tie-ins. In 2001, Sonic Team was keeping the identities of Shadow the Hedgehog and Rouge the Bat a closely guarded secret – that is, until toy manufacturer Resaurus announced a line of Sonic Adventure 2 action figures. Though Sonic Team had been teasing (brief, mostly obscured) glimpses of “Dark Sonic” since SA2‘s announcement, the concept art provided by Resaurus became the first time anybody had ever heard of or seen the character Rouge the Bat.
Photos of these kinds of events usually end up trickling out eventually, so if and when they do surface (assuming somebody at Sega isn’t hurrying to the Toy Fair as we speak to hush everybody up), we’ll be sure to pass them along.
