Three juggernaut developers are coming together on 3DS

We don’t normally do “announcements of announcements” here at TSSZ News, and I’ve been wrestling with whether or not this counts as one for the last twenty minutes. Clearly, something was announced, we just don’t know what it is yet – but we do know that it involves a collaboration between Capcom, Namco-Bandai, and Sega. The announcement came out of the Nintendo Direct conference held today, where Nintendo discussed the upcoming wave of software for Nintendo platforms in the months ahead.

This announcement isn’t totally without information, however. A teaser site exists for the mystery project, where a gloved hand punches in the numbers “032760″ on a safe, revealing the three company logos, and a note suggesting the project is “impossible to predict”. Of note is the site’s URL – more specifically, the reference to “pxz”. Given the link provided to tweet about the teaser site also referencing the “#pxz” hash tag, it’s very likely related to the project’s name.

Anything beyond that is merely speculation at this point, but it’s worth noting that Capcom and Namco are already collaborating to produce “Street Fighter x Tekken“, which itself is often abbreviated down to “sxt”. Could “pxz” be a three-way fighting game crossover between Street Fighter, Tekken, and Virtua Fighter? Rumors and hoaxes of a Tekken vs. Virtua Fighter have existed all the way back since the late 90′s, and despite the 3DS receiving a port of Street Fighter 4, it’s not getting a version of Street Fighter x Tekken.

But let’s not forget that the genre does not have to be limited strictly to that of fighting games – Namco and Capcom also teamed up on the Playstation 2 in 2005 for Namco x Capcom, a hybrid action-strategy RPG that never made it out of Japan (which rumors at the time pinned the blame on Namco, who did not want to expend the effort of translating what they felt was a niche game so reliant on text and voice).

There’s no telling when more information on this project will be coming, as there are no dates, countdown timers, or anything associated with this “pxz” page. My guess is we’ll see more at E3 in June. Until we know more, let the speculation begin!
