Where Other Projects Have Succeeded, Shenmue May Not

On the heels of some comments made by Sumo’s Steve Lycett concerning the idea of crowdsourcing a future Shenmue project, we decided to ask in our @Issue poll if you would contribute a significant amount of money toward a theoretical Kickstarter campaign for a third proper Shenmue.  We say significant given the funding likely necessary to back such a project; keep in mind that many reports cited the original Shenmue‘s budget at close to $50 million.  Both Shenmue games ended up with a combined budget of $70 million.

Interestingly enough, out of 577 votes, a majority weren’t willing to put their money where a lot of mouths are.  59 percent said they would not contribute a significant amount to a Shenmue kickstarter, while 41 percent said they would.  Kickstarter campaigns for games have reached into the hundreds of thousands of dollars with full backing, but Shenmue would need far more to make good business sense.

A new poll is now available to vote on.  The latest results can be discussed below in the comments.
