Focusing Sonic on Increased Merchandise
Some people dream of rain and of gardens in the desert sand. Others dream of Jeannie. But it appears Sega is dreaming that Sonic be a part of even more wild, wacky, and weird merchandise efforts–even above and beyond the Hello Kitty branded hedgehog we showed you last week.
Speaking to the UK based MCV, Sega Europe COO Jurgen Post told reporter Michael French that Sonic merchandise efforts will expand in an attempt to bump up company profits.
“Sonic is a well-known character, but we’ve got a lot of room to grow in merchandising,” Post said. “We dream of Hello Kitty. We’re still far off from that but we can see that our profits are growing year on year in the US and Europe.”
Post is of course referring to the rousing sales success the Hello Kitty franchise has had in Japan and the around the world since its inception during the 1970s. Still, he noted that despite that goal, Sonic games will still be Sega’s top priority.
“We will always do the computer game but the merchandising is a very important aspect to Sonic,” Post said.
